Lovers and Friends (102,674)
by Tevin from USA

Positives: Ok so Mariah looked amazing. It was nice to see that she is in good terms with Boys 2 Men [Boyz II Men] and Miguel. Some of the performance was good and I loved her energy.
Negatives: OSD (in her defense she struggled with this song back in 06) and she was in a lot better vocal health then. That's a super hard song to sing, full high belts.
Devastation: She lipped part of VOL. Like what the heck, that was the only song that she never lipped in her 30+ year career, no matter how good or how bad she sound on a particular day. I honestly can't process this right now. It was her one sacred song.

The whistle or the complete voice? (102,670)

If it's true that Mariah has nodules on her vocals that have damaged her voice, but allow her to facilitate the whistle register, what would you rather? Mariah to get surgery and lose the whistle register, but return to an overall healthy voice, or maintain the whistle register and continue to work around the nodules? This is a purely speculative post, as I don't know that she has nodules etc, and I have no clue what's wrong with her voice. If it is true, I'd much rather she lip whistle notes for the rest of her career and sing everything in between in a healthy voice.

The whistle or the complete voice? (102,671)
by Bill from the UK

I'd rather she didn't lip anything if I'm honest. All I want is for her to sing a song live end to end like she was able to 1990-1996.
No one would mind or be disappointed if she announced her upper register was no longer available going forward given her age. It is nothing more than a gimmick now as I've said previously, any studio notes are heavily engineered and she hasn't hit a live one in decades, so really, what is the point of them?
As for surgery, there is the rumour that she had surgery after the Daydream tour and that is why her voice was never the same from 1997 onwards. We will never know the actual truth of the matter because Mariah refuses to acknowledge there is anything wrong, or that anything has changed.
This leads to perhaps unfair speculation. She squandered her gift through drinking, she squandered her gift through drugs, she squandered her gift by not looking after her voice properly etc. It could be a medical issue, it could be she has a degenerative illness (which would explain why she can't move on stage unaided), it could be a whole host of reasons. Point is, until she does that candid to-camera confession and opens up, we won't ever know.
I get lambasted on here by the Yass Queen Gang, but honestly, I love her too much. I would cry with relief and love and support her and champion her more than I ever have done previously if she only was brave enough to open her heart and let us in.
I can only speak for myself, but I love her more than whistle notes and number one records. I love her for who she is and what she has brought to my life. All I ever want is for her to be happy, healthy, and loved. She has given me so much, and all I can ever give her back is my love.
If only she'd let me.

Bill, I stand corrected. On the innanet (webmaster please leave that spelling for dramatic effect) people have wrongfully given MC a songwriting credit, but I checked my Glitter CD and you are right. Rick James wrote All My Life. Then, me being the nerd I am, looked to see if it is a cover from one of his album cuts or something. It's not. There is a rumor that it's an old song he wrote for the Mary Jane girls but that can't be substantiated. So here's where we unreal fans stand. There are two songs in the Mariah Carey catalogue that she has recorded that are not remakes that she did not have a hand in writing. When You Believe and All My Life.

Why is MC such a brilliant songwriter? (102,664)

I love Stevie Wonder and agree with everything you said, but he didn't write the lyrics or the music for "For Once In My Life". That song was recorded before he started taking more creative control over his music.

Why is MC such a brilliant songwriter? (102,645)
by Bobby A from United States
| |
|

This question came to my mind yesterday watching one of the American Idol contestants perform one of Stevie Wonder's most well known hits- For Once In My Life. Stevie Wonder will always be regarded as a brilliant songwriter because of his unique ability to draw in the listener with his lyrics and melodies. And that is exactly what MC does with her lyrics and melodies. Lastly, MC does that unique humming and singing to the melody of her songs that very few singers do. ABMB is a huge example of MC at her best. MC is one of the greatest songwriters to live. What do the Lambs think?

Ummmm Bill dahling, I did some digging and MC is given writing credits on both All My Life and Almost Home so I think my statement stands. When You Believe is the only original song she has recorded with no writing credit on. Webmaster E. That's your rap name. I think the award is for the lyrics and melody. I don't think it was awarded for only the film version or they would've had the actresses sing it at the Oscars and not MC and Whitney. I think no matter what you do to a song musically, the lyric and melody credit always goes to the original songwriter and the producer that adds to or changes it still doesn't get writing credit, just whatever producer credit he's entitled to because he added to it.

What is this concert I keep see footage from popping up on YouTube, was this recently, or is it from last year?
From what I can hear at least, she is better than Global Cityzen, but still throaty and raspy, and still using the backing tracks we have become custom to. But she seems a bit more confident and happy.
If the concert was from last year, then just forget this message. Then we just have to wait for Mariah's next gig which is not that far away.

She'll eventually be inducted, Randy, just be patient. As for an EGOT, well, she could definitely get an EGT. Even if her fairy godmother turned her into a great actress, I doubt she would ever get an Oscar. It's OK though, she doesn't need it.
I've always pictured 90's Mariah playing Sandy on a Grease remake.
