Maybe an EP or a Maxi Single? (102,602)

Not that I am giving up on MC and will always be a fan, but I have been thinking what other artist can I build up a huge music collection. I just haven't found one definitive artist yet. I thought it was going to be Dua Lipa, but she is too pop for me. I guess I'm leaning more towards Kelky Clarkson [sic] since I have everything that she has released. There is something about the realness in her voice that makes me get into every song on her album. I love her new songs Mine and Me. To conclude, MC will always be my #1 artist, but I am missing new music and being able to open up the insert and read the credits and lyrics. What a treat it was see if her name was before or after the main producer or to see who she collaborated with or who did the background vocals. Maybe she will surprise us in 2024. Half of 24 is 12 and 12 is her lucky number. Lol. Bye bye.

Remember that record labels as we knew them don't exist anymore. Recording an album might be more expensive than the revenue they would get from it, especially from a legacy artist like Mariah. I think she should go independent at this point.

Apparently, record labels don't think so either. Who would have thought that Mariah Carey would be without record label? Something ain't right with that picture. Where did MC go wrong from 2015- 2019? I don't think that she ever makes the Hot 100 top 10 ever again.

Things are not as difficult as they used to be. Technology has made it possible to have so many tools at our disposal, we can create great music and videos without having to drain our pockets dry. There are movies filmed with cellphones that you would believe were filmed with the best equipment. Physical CD's are almost a thing of past, so Mariah can go independent, release her music online, and bundled her albums with the price of concert tickets like many artists do nowadays. What she doesn't realize is that with people having the attention span of a goldfish, disappearing for long periods of time without any new music to keep her hardcore fan base entertained is not good. Why no release The Rarities 2 and then a new album next year?

I do agree that MC is going to lose fans if she doesn't release an album soon, however, I don't know if releasing a studio album is profitable for her anymore. I'm noticing that Cardi B hasn't released her second album. Many other acts wait a long time between albums. We got spoiled by the 90s. Maybe MC could give as an EP or a maxi-single with different versions like I Still Believe or My All/Stay Awhile. It would have to be a killer single though not an Infinity or I Don't.

I think at one point Mariah questioned if she should release these niche projects (like the duets, inspirational Butterfly Lounge) or if she should start working on an actual new commercial studio album. Maybe she changed gears and is starting to write MC16. Or maybe like many speculate she has lost her voice and is not doing anything music wise anymore. I actually wouldn't mind if she ended on the high that was Caution. Too bad more people didn't buy/stream it. Then again, if they didn't buy her in 2018 what makes us think the would in 2023? If Caution is the last full album at least I'm grateful that it was quality.

How dare you? Mariah is at home breastfeeding, bonding with her little twins and frolicking with Tanaka. She can release her next project in 2026 when the twins are ready to enter kindergarden. Believe me when I tell you that we, her three remaining fans, will be here waiting. I'll purchase two copies.

It's been all but confirmed by some Mariah insiders on Twitter that she does not have the rumored projects coming this year that everyone thought. Not even the Butterfly Lounge. That leaves us waiting until next year, however seeing how 2024 is the 30th Anniversary of "Merry Christmas" I'm sure that will be the priority next year.

Emotions album is one of my favourites, it oozes soul, her voice is so warm and the ballads are perfect. Till the End of Time is a masterpiece, it's beautiful. And one of my all time favourite songs is Can't Let Go. The video portrays a classy Mariah, something about her in that video is different she shows so much passion. Her image was so refined during this album wholesome, relatable and appealing.

"Make music that mirror their life", yes absolutely. That's what I'm missing too. It's good to get older and wiser and the music should show it. Not trying to be 20. Mariah's 90ies albums had the best melodies and I love the lyrics. Funny the sound was more for grown-ups than on the last two albums. I would still love a Jazz album by Mariah. Or back to her "roots" classic Mariah Carey with a real band/musicians.

I know that show business is harder for women, but the reason I like Sting and many other male singers is the fact that they have not tried to compete with the younger generations. I love Mariah, I love Madonna and many more, but why don't they make music that mirror their life, and their age. I'm getting older too, and younger artists like Adele feels more my age. I love Mariah, specially 1990 to 1997. Drop the lazy RnB. Make melodies.

I find myself looking back on this album/era regretting that it hasn't been properly appreciated by fans and critics alike. I consider it Mariah's most "adult" album and my second favorite behind "Butterfly". Songs like "Can't Let Go", "If It's Over", Make It Happen", "So Blessed" and others sound and feel like they were recorded/written by someone much older than early 20s. Having C+C Music Factory alongside Walter Afanasieff really helped her strike a "just right" balance of soul, pop, gospel, and house.
It was also unique in the sense that she was not yet married to Tommy but had full control over the creative direction of the album. It makes me wonder what her trajectory would have been if she hadn't decided to marry Tommy. Don't get me wrong, I love "Music Box" and "Daydream", but "Emotions" really tops both of those records in terms of writing, vocals, and production. She seemed much happier in the "Emotions" period and not very happy during the 1993-1996 period. It's such a unique moment in her catalog and career.

Well, I think there's nothing harder for women than showbusiness. And I wonder if it will ever change? Look at the Stones, Elton John, Sting, Bryan Adams. Nobody cares how old they are, for women it should be the same. But it's not. Tina Turner, Gladys Knight and Cher are really the coolest who showed how wrong the media and record companies are. But they are sadly rare indeed. Music should never be about age or anything. It's so dumb. A voice, talent is the only thing that is needed. Something that is totally missed by most of today's "artists".

Preach. Yes, the double standard is crazy. I remember reading an article about Pink having to "fight" to get her songs played after 35. 35 is old?
Mariah beat the odds with hits like "Obsessed" and "Beautiful".
Mark my words, Beyonce is going through her E=MC2 phrase right now. Her fans better get ready for memeroirs and beyond.

I disagree that Mariah's "racial identity" was concealed during her early years by Tommy. She is on the record in one of her first TV interviews in 1990 about this.
Critics like Nelson George who made Mariah's "racial identity" into a big deal were the problem, not Tommy. No other female singer of that era (or any era, really) was called upon by critics to constantly explain her "racial" background. No one made a big deal about Whitney Houston's background, Celine Dion's background, or Toni Braxton's background. Just Mariah's. And the people who constantly asked her to self-identify so were feeding into racialist and racist thinking. This is the same BS that got applied to gay/lesbian artists who would rather focus on their musical output than constantly have to discuss their sexual orientation.
The implication of this never-ending discussion is that African-Americans somehow are inherently better singers than people of European descent or that skin color has anything to do with singing ability. And Mariah was called upon to pander to this nonsense. Listen to a Janet Jackson record alongside a Celine Dion record, and you'll know that this is absolute BS. Fans who continue to focus on this (and even Mariah herself) cheapen Mariah's artistry and accomplishments.

One thing that I did notice from 1990-1997 is that Tommy concealed her bi-racial identity in any way that he could. Go back and watch those early 90s performances and interviews, it was hard to tell during those years that MC was bi-racial at least for me. Tommy's oppressive behavior over MC really did something to her emotionally and mentally. MC was never the same woman after 1997.

Oh, I totally agree that marrying Tommy undermined her credibility in the eyes of some people. I also agree that he had a positive impact on her career prior to their separation. I think Mariah also had a lot to do with her own success, but Tommy should be given the credit he is due. He was correct to steer her away from movies.
I wish she had opted not to marry him and instead only interacted with him in a professional capacity or maybe tried a bit harder post-1997 to be civil and professional. I think marrying him meant she had something to prove once they separated in 1997/98 and it resulted in her making a number of poor choices in the ensuing years just to be "anti-Tommy" rather than being "pro-Mariah". Backing out of the US leg of the "Butterfly" tour for that stupid movie with Chris Tucker (ugh), rushing the "Rainbow" album out the door, watering down the original concept for "Glitter", tacking way too many rappers onto songs on "Rainbow" and "Glitter", focusing too much on her image and not on her voice, etcetera.

I might come to this board once in a while, because we are not yes people on this board. But maybe I would have stayed away when the messages become too harsh. But I would go for the constructive criticism.

"Marrying Tommy was a massive mistake because it meant she had zero separation between her personal and professional life, a recipe for burnout. And when it became clear that Tommy was sabotaging her during the 1998-2001 period, she had to work that much harder."
No one likes to say it, but the other side to this is that marrying Tommy made her lose a lot of credibility. There was a question mark over her success because she was cleverly married to the boss of the record company. If Tommy could quite easily sabotage her career, he could quite easily make her successful.
Her most successful years 1993-1997. The years she was Tommy's wife? 1993-1997.
