She performs Hero and Butterfly. Also discusses separation from Tommy, living at Sing Sing, relationship with her mother, Patricia. Good and early reference to some material from TMOMC.

Leave The Door Open (97,547)

This is all kinds of awesome. When people hear the term "70's music", most automatically think "disco", forgetting the smooth and velvety soul of that era. This collaboration between Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak is the best homage to 70's soul I have heard in a long time, and further solidifies why aside from The Weeknd, Bruno is the only other man in current pop worth acknowledging. People are sleeping on .Paak as well. This sets the bar quite high for quarantine projects - melodic, nostalgic and very effective for what it sets out to achieve. And it's not produced by The Smeezingtons.

Foo Fighters (97,546)
by Mara from United States

I don't know if anyone saw James Cordon with the Foo Fighters being interviewed. James was interviewing the band and said to Pat Smear that he didn't know they had something in common. Pat said his favorite person to listen to is Mariah Carey and his favorite album is Butterfly all the way. Made me think how cool it would be to have Mariah do something with them for her Chick album if it sees the light of day. I still am praying we get to hear it, especially with her vocals on lead. Hearing them talk about Mariah and thinking how she recorded the Alternative album around the height of Nirvana makes it a collaboration made in heaven. Not to mention Dave Grohl.

Honorable mention: Betcha Gon Know - for the intriguing, vivid, angry narrative.
5. Migrate - The first second already announces it as a Mariah track. 4. Heartbreaker - The quintessential upbeat sad song. 3. It's Like That - The first line says it all. 2. Honey - Nothing like orgasmic cooing to open a slinky track. 1. Fantasy - Just the perfect start to an album entitled Daydream.

You Rock My World is the only upbeat track on that album that successfully approximates the contemporary soul sound of his past hits and was the perfect MJ sound for the 2000s compared to the other herky jerky and frantic Darkchild productions.

Regarding interludes - while I enjoy recorded studio chat as it does lend a sense of intimacy to the record, sometimes it can sound lazy and unnecessary, like those Janet had in her All For You album.

Def Jam vinyls (97,542)
by Bobby A from United States

|

I wonder why the Def Jam colored vinyls are no longer available on MC's website. I bought all of the Def Jam vinyls again from this local vinyl store in Alpharetta, Georgia because the colored vinyls don't have as great of sound as the standard black vinyls. So if you are looking to purchase the Def Jam vinyls called up your local record shop.

Wow Morgan and Allison are hilarious. They defamed her for years with reckless abandon and have the nerve to continue with their extortion attempts. I hope they get big fat zero each. It's more than either e deserves.

I'm ashamed that I didn't mention "Butterflies". I love that song. My favourite track from "Invincible" is "You Rock my World". I miss MJ so much. A collaboration between MJ and MC would have been a dream come true. I know there were rumours he did background vocals for her on an unreleased song. But I would want a full on collaboration. Alas it's too late.

The sequencing of MIAM is the most random-sounding in her discography, but it still does play like a pre-divorce record for the most part, and Cry. being the opener was probably just Mariah subtly letting us know what's up at the time. The most intentionally selected songs on a tracklist are usually the opening and closing 3 songs.

Andrew it's so funny you brought up the Oprah interview in 99 with Pat. When Pat speaks like a protective mother over her children, you can see Mariah's face as you said just like a child who just needs a hug from her mother, and just looked so different listening to her mom talk like she was being protective. Being 25% Irish myself, I had an Irish grandmother and aunt who were not overly affectionate and they could came off as cold, very much like Pat. Not saying everyone Irish is. I was literally going to post about that along with her Thanksgiving special on NBC where Pat and Mariah were on the steps and Pat was talking about Mariah and her voice. Even though Mariah was still quite young here, you can clearly see that when Pat speaks like a mother speaks about their child, Mariah transforms into this child who really looks like she is enjoying this validation that her mother does care about her. Everytime Pat is interviewed in front of Mariah, you can see how she becomes this vulnerable little girl. She really does look like she just craves that love from her mother. I do hope they can resolve some things before it's too late. Languishing could still be about Pat despite her singing on the second Christmas album and being around her, whatnot. It may have been a constant struggle for Mariah and it seems it truly was.

I would love to hear her cover Butterflies or Heaven Can Wait by MJ.
But my first choices for a new cover would be either Here, The Dance, or Dreamin About U all by Prince. The latter has an arrangement that is ready for her brand of vocal layering. Pink Cashmere would be another great one to hear her take on.

Talking of Languishing and album openers, I think Languishing is the perfect first track for an album. The song poses a question and fades to silence followed by songs with massive beats and incredible hooks - themselves interspersed with three shorter interludes of the same music posing different questions or thoughts. And interludes of Mariah and her musicians talking over mics in the studio.

Speechless seems a little too drab and saccharine. Since Butterflies would be too obvious, I'd rather her go for older, beloved classics such as One Day In Your Life or even a gender flip of She's Out Of My Life.

Wow. And I love that she opened MIAMTEC with Cry. In fact I couldn't come up with a top 5 but have been meaning to post how that one sticks out for me the most, and in a good way. I still to this day love the sequencing on MIAMTEC, at least the first handful of tracks, how it opens with Cry. and ever so slowly builds up to Thirsty. Love those first 5 songs, they just flow for me. Forget Migrate, how about #Justice for Faded, another should've been a single.
