I love the whistles. It's everywhere true, but when you hear the words "whistle register", it's almost always followed by "Mariah Carey". When people say "Mariah" they follow it up by the whole "finger on ear phone, other hand in the air simulating musical note" move that Mariah does right before she lets out a whistle. It's her signature, and an artist always keeps their signature. She's very creative with her whistles, the way she uses it to sing words, express emotions, use it as a background layering, heck even have a whole interlude of just whistles. She's done it all. I love it. I'll be honest, I don't have a lot of ideas about the vocal analysis aspect, I see a lot of fans dissect how her voice changed and what went wrong. As a layman in this aspect of things, I only understand what sounds good to me and one of the first things that mesmerized me when it came to MC was not only her beautiful raspy honey coated voice but her whistle. I've never heard anyone else do it before and as a kid I was awestruck. So her whistles are always special to me.

Brandon, honestly? If you were stranded on a desert island and you only had time to save three Mariah CD's from the burning plane, Caution would be one of them?

Re: Cover (97,507) (97,508) by Andrew from the United Kingdom
I, in some way, agree with you. And, for what it's worth, I do value your viewpoint, somewhat. I chose Someone Like You as an example not because I think Mariah should *copy* someone else but that I firmly believe she could write something as moving as that song and perform it well. Adele singing SLY (and changing the chorus to an easy singing range) whilst crying through it at The Brit Awards at the O2 was the catalyst to superstardom (as opposed to just stardom). Watching it live was breathtaking and emotional even though the song had a range of about five notes. Mariah can easily do that.

I disagree with your post about interpolating samples, however. I know Mariah is incredibly clever the way she works music. She is in the realms of genius - and I say that as someone who is not a fan of hyperbole. But we know that she's clever. I think sometimes she's *too clever* and the purpose or sentiment gets lost.

She still *sounds* like Mariah Carey. The voice is scratched but in her normal speaking range, you know it's her. I may be wrong (only joking) but her head voice seems be be easier to transition to and from. So there's something to work with. If she keeps it simple and moves people she might have a surprise hit album on her hands. With a new look (and I do think she should get the hot body back) her next era could be an amazing final hurrah. I'm rooting for her. But if it's more of the same, I guess I'll be a legacy lamb and be done with it.

Oh. And no more whistle notes. They used to be rare and like an adrenaline shot. Am I the only one that feels like they're everywhere? The whistle not has a place in Close My Eyes where it has no business being.

Re: Cover (97,506) (97,507) by Edward from USA
I think Mariah should go back to basics by writing her own lyrics, and collaborating with a real musician, like a pianist or something. She should keep it simple production wise too. Even though Caution is not my favorite album of hers, it is definitely an album I've enjoyed a lot. I still think she's a musical genius. Interpolating the recoding from "Trading Places" into "Giving Me Life" was very creative and different. It's good she realized the album was kind of short, hopefully we'll get a 14 track album next time, a fun album.

Re: Cover (97,504) (97,506) by Andrew from the United Kingdom
Mariah could do something along the lines of Someone Like You by Adele. But an original. These vocal histrionics, jumping an octave and screeching is not needed anymore. Nobody is asking her for that. I was listening to Avicii this afternoon. Wake Me Up is energetic and moving and is sung within a five note range almost. You don't need six octaves to make an impact anymore. Even Ariana seems to realise that. But I am fully convinced Mariah won't move from her tired formula. I swear to any god anyone believes in that if she says she is in a recording studio with JD again, I'm off. And I think a lot of other lambs will be fighting me for the exit.

A strong majority of us will have a Sony Walkman story as we have been fans since forever. For me I remember playing Music Box in my Walkman nonstop.

Re: Cover (97,497) (97,504) by Edward from USA
"I Wanna Know What Love Is" was a decent cover, but after how she destroyed "One More Try" and considering the state of her current voice, I would rather she doesn't mess with the classics. Only if she's going to stich it all together perfectly in the studio.

There are so many songs:
Halleluja (Leonard Cohen)
Eternal Flame (The Bangles)
Don't Make Me Over (Dionne Warwick)
Unchained Melody (The Righteous Brothers)
And the list would go on if I just don't say stop.

I agree with this. Everyone should go back and relisten. This came so quickly after the debut, and they moved on so quickly to the promo for MTV Unplugged, that it sort of got lost in the shuffle. It's full of great songs and the vocals are out of this world.

If Mariah was to cover a song for her next album what song would you guys pick? I'd go for either "Speechless" or "You're Not Alone" both by Michael Jackson.

Justice for "Emotions" (97,496) by Anonymous from United States
After "Butterfly," I would argue that "Emotions" is her second best album. And it's definitely her best album vocally. I particularly love everything she worked on with David Cole and C+C Music Factory and wonder how much more great work she could have produced with David Cole had he not tragically died during the height of the AIDS epidemic in the 1990s. The ballads and the uptempo songs on this album are all on point. From "Can't Let Go" to "You're So Cold", the writing and production on "Emotions" eclipsed her debut on multiple fronts.

I had the black Sony Walkman too. I was so proud to own my first Walkman. Haha. And the cassette which was played endlessly was "Daydream". I still have the original cassette.

Sony Walkman? Man you are old. What's even sadder is I know what it is because I had one too. P.S. Music Box was my first MC CD I ever bought at the ripe old age of 16. I remember having the TV on and Hero started playing. That voice, that feeling I had upon my first listen I'll never forget. I love her big, booming ballads too.

Re: Album rankings (97,486) (97,492) by Anonymous from United States
To me, "Daydream" felt too carefully crafted for commercial success and not enough of an artistic statement. I don't get the sense that Mariah enjoyed herself while recording that album as much as she did recording "Butterfly". I like the album but just do not think it's as good as "Butterfly". And as much as I love Mariah, I'm okay with Seal winning Record of the Year for "Kiss From a Rose". Alanis' "Jagged Little Pill" over "Daydream" I'm not sure so sure about.

I disagree with many of Mariah's takes on her own work (i.e. disowning songs like "I Don't Wanna Cry" and "Love Takes Time" but not "Obsessed" or "Touch My Body"), but I agree with her assessment that "Butterfly" is her best. The ballads are great - "Close My Eyes", "Butterfly", "Whenever You Call". The hip-hop oriented tracks like "The Roof", "Breakdown" and "Honey" worked really well without veering off into the pandering direction she took in the post-"Butterfly" years. And I just love those house versions of "Butterfly" - I would have loved to see the full length "Fly Away" on the album.

I also just have a very personal connection to "Butterfly" in the way that you said you connected to "Music Box". I listened to the CD version of "Butterfly" a ton on my Walkman.

1) Butterfly
2) Music box (diamond treasure)
3) MOAIA (my ears hopelessly love this one)
4) Daydream
5) E=MC2
6) Glitter
7) Rainbow
8) All others change positions according to the space I am in life.
9) Last position would be "The elusive chanteuse". I have tried but can't connect with this album (at all).

Agree completely. That is why I posted my rankings without any explanation or justification. It is completely a matter of preference. I'm sure there is someone out there who likes "[No] I didn't (featuring cringe-y rapper)" and "Crapfinity", but who am I to question what they like and don't like as a fan. Don't try to "fathom" or "comprehend" ones preference. Great music is in the ears of the listener, lols.
