The Oprah Conversation (95,752) by Chicago Lamb from USA Something about this reveal doesn't sit well with me. Mariah has a look on her face. She looks angry, sad and disgusted having to expose her family dirt. I expected to hear about Alison who has been a pain in the neck since the beginning of her career. But what I find sad is that the relationship with her brother followed the same fate. Morgan and Mariah had a good relationship well up to 2005. And now to my shock, it seems she's digging into her mom. Patricia has been her rock. In the LA Times review, she's labeled as a "negligent" parent. I hope Mariah and Patricia's relationship is still strong and intact because that would be that ultimate tragedy. (Friday 25 September 2020; 14:45)

The Oprah Conversation (95,750) by RoRo from PH I still recall with fondness that time when I was 5 or 6 years old when while listening to "I'll Be There" on the radio I asked my mother who this singer was. I remember this vividly because this was the first and last time I have ever asked that question out of sheer awe: such a beautiful, angelic, other-worldly instrument. It is an obvious thing to say that her massive catalogue has been the soundtrack of my life, her image the inspiration of my antics early on. From 6th grade's Can't Take That Away, which really was the time I first had an idea I might not be straight (lol), to rushing home from high school to catch re-runs of Divas Live 1999 with her and Diana Ross in matching gold and silver short dresses, to the debacle that was Glitter, to her redemption with The Emancipation of Mimi. I watched this interview literally without pausing. The first third is a discussion of her growing up as a biracial girl in a wildly dysfunctional family, which is an enlightening revelation as much as it is a sad one. The clear highlights for me though, and the ones I almost teared up for, are the following: (1) When Oprah reads the letter Leontyne Price wrote Mariah after the two met at Oprah's Legends Ball in 2005. The last line says "Your devotion to your art and career are praiseworthy. This brings you a standing ovation and a resounding brava. Brava. Brava." Leontyne Price is widely regarded as the first internationally-acclaimed African American opera singer. This is the only time Mariah cries in the interview. (2) When Oprah asks her the last question: "What is the word you feel about this book being released into the world? Is there one word?" Mariah Carey: "Freer." I cannot wait to have an internet-free weekend to just immerse myself in her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey. This is one of the few things I have waited for my whole life. I just woke up in the middle of the night and noticed there was a CTTA Morales Club Mix Edit that I'd never heard so I listened, as one does in the middle of the night, and that was a cute moment. Were there official Against All Odds remixes? It wasn't released here so I wasn't privy to their existence. Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of all Time (95,743) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines Never thought I'd see the day this would happen as Rolling Stone has not exactly been the most welcoming of Mariah's discography, but The Emancipation of Mimi has just been included at #389 on their revised list. A lot of rock fans are pissed that their revered classics no longer dominate the list like they used to, especially its upper half. There is also an obscene amount of new rap/hip-hop entries that got in this time. The list is still questionable at best, and we shouldn't lend too much credence to a publication that has notoriously historically biased towards male artists, particularly in rock, but it's nice to see them finally recognize Mariah's influence rather than pretending that she doesn't exist. While TEOM's inclusion over Butterfly or Daydream is quite the surprise (the magazine rated it 2.5 out of 5 stars in 2005), it's actually easy to overlook the album's influence and impact due to its commercial success and Mariah's comeback narrative. Looking back, the album did help get melodic R&B back into the mainstream public consciousness after a few years of the charts being dominated by the singing rappers (Ja Rule, Nelly, 50 Cent, Missy, etc.). Its perfect, balanced fusion of modern and retro soul has clearly stylistically influenced later albums such as The Breakthrough and Growing Pains by Mary J. Blige, Fergie's The Dutchess, Alicia Keys' As I Am, Beyonce's B'day, Keyshia Cole's debut album, and heck, even J.Lo's Brave, among others. (Friday 25 September 2020; 09:58)

The Oprah interview was good. I like that Oprah took Mariah to task when she tried to avoid one of her questions. The part where she talks about the awful thing that her ex sister did to her shocked me and I work in psychiatric services. I am not ashamed to say that I might not have been able to carry myself with the dignity Mariah has. I know that her memoir will give many people the strength to fight their own demons.
