Re: Thoughts after first listen to "The Rarities" (95,912) (95,913)

Love the album. Haven't gotten to the Tokyo Dome concert yet but the highlights for me that I've had on repeat (other than OHOMO) are:
1. Loverboy (Firecracker version) 2. Cool on you 3. Can you hear me
Lullaby of Birdland is lovely, I'm not getting into Mesmerized yet - probably once I've worn the others out.
Who knew a track from the Glitter debacle era would be the strongest track from all the eras represented. OHOMO is the crowning glory of this album for me - but we love everybody.

Thoughts after first listen to "The Rarities" (95,912)

I was not very impressed with the tracks included from the 1990-1995 period, save for the b-sides "Everything Fades Away", "Slipping Away", and "Do You Think of Me". The highlights were songs on the second part of the album: "Out Here on My Own", "Loverboy", "I Pray", "Cool On You", "Mesmerized". and "Lullaby of Birdland". Mariah sounds less creatively stifled and more joyful on every single one of these tracks in comparison to songs like "Can You Hear Me", "All I Live For", and "One Night". This goes back to my initial reaction to the track listing. I wish that Mariah had included more songs from the post-1997 period. And my goodness, the original version of "Loverboy" is just so fantastically bouncy, campy, and fun. Hearing this just makes me even more furious at Jennifer Lopez, Tommy Mottolla, Irv Gotti, Ja Rule, and everyone else who participated in the "All That Glitters" sabotage.

Loverboy (95,911)

The "Firecracker" original version is really, really good and 1000x better than the re-recorded version. The vocals are way better. The "Firecracker" sample and production give it a bounce and energy that the released version lacked. I think this version would have received a much better critical and commercial response. This is yet another glimpse into what "All That Glitters" could have been without the sabotage.

Hypnotized (95,910)
by HoneyLamb from Germany

Am I the only one who is a bit sad that she teased us with Hypnotized back then, and it's not part of The Rarities album now? The album itself is wonderful, even though I feel that some of these unreleased songs are a bit weaker than songs from their respective albums and that's why they were not part of them back then. Still thankful to finally hear them as they give us a bigger picture.

Loverboy Firecracker version (95,908)

I love it. It's very different to the Candy version, sparse in production and more vocally driven. I would say it does actually go well with the movie, could totally hear this played in the film, it's giving me "fame" vibes actually. I can see why Mariah was peeved. Lol. Honestly I appreciate the two of them. I would be bopping to this for a long while.

The Rarities (95,907)
by Bill from the UK

Oh wow. What an album. I am floored, and to hear "new" songs from 90s Mariah was quite an emotional ride for me. I love all the songs, but Lord in heaven how on earth did Mesmerized not make it onto Me I Am Mariah? That song is probably the highlight for me. I will come back later with my track by track review. Apologies in advance lol.
What a week this has been. What a week. Thank you Mariah so much, for everything.

Oh I would never kick [Just to hold you once again] off [Music box]. It's beautiful. I still think [Everything fades away] is a melancholic masterpiece. I had high hopes that you can hear me on first few bars but it never really goes anywhere. Gonna listen to the rest in more depth tomorrow. Loverboy Firecracker I'm not sold on, vocals defo better but I can't see that it would have done any better at rescuing [Glitter] back in the day. Great to have some more tracks as always but would have liked some more 90's power ballads.

For some reason, Here We Go Around Again sounds to me like it was inspired sonically by Whitney's How Will I Know in a good way, in the best way. But now that you mention the sitcom thing. You are spot on.

Here We go Around Again doesn't sound like Mariah song at all to me. It reminds me 80s sitcom theme. I like it, but the chorus seems unfinished, it's not catchy enough. All I live For reminds me Photograph of Mary from Trey's fitst album. Mesmerised sounds like a Stevie Wonder song to me. Why wasn't it on Me. I Am? I like Firecracker Loverboy more than the Candy version. Can we call The Rarities a cohesive body of work?

My copy arrived in the mail today. This album is so hot. Cool On You needs to be a single now. Mariah must have recorded I Pray at 7am in the morning. She sounds so good. I have never heard her sing like this before. There is a different texture to her voice than we have heard before. There is not one bad song on this album. The ending on I Don't Wanna Cry by the Price Sisters and Melonie Daniels is marvelous. I want my vinyl version now.

The Rarities (95,900)

I'm loving The Rarities. My favorites are [Out here on my own], [All I live for], Mesmerized and [Here we go around again]. I'm not counting [Everything fades away], [Slipping away] and [Do you think of me] because I already have them. Loverboy is better than the album version (to me) but still isn't a really great song like Fantasy or Heartbreaker.

The Rarities thoughts (95,897)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
|

I don't wanna go all shoulda woulda coulda but really, it's almost alarming how many of these recently unearthed material could have made the cut in the albums that were released during the time they were recorded.
Here We Go Around Again is fun and buoyant but would sound more dated even alongside anything on the debut album.
It's quite obvious why Can You Hear Me didn't make the final tracklist.
I've always felt like Music Box was a little too mellow, and so All I Live For could have easily bumped off Just To Hold You Once Again.
One Night is much more soulful than Long Ago.
The Firecracker version of Loverboy is messier than I would have imagined, but the vocals are better and the chorus has a catchier bounce to it than the one on the official version. This original version feels more like something that Mariah would do.
I Pray is just such an undeniable Mariah tune. How did this not make it into the TEOM re-release? Is it because of token gospel song quota Mariah seems to have implemented in pretty much all of her albums?
Apparently, Kick Rocks is Cool On You. Love the sass and attitude on this one. Still think it would could have made E=MC2 even more festive.
So something as good and jazzy as Mesmerized was left on the cutting floor in favor of a questionable Betcha Gon' Know "remix" on the deluxe version of MIAMTEC? Okay.
It's quite nice that Mariah chose Lullaby Of Birdland to be the sole live moment on the disc. I would have thought that being the perfectionist she is, she'd go and record a studio version of this instead but hey, this is actually good.
The only reason Close My Eyes was re-done for this album seems to be to tie into the memoir. It's a nice enough version.
Of all or Mariah's compilations, this is the one I enjoyed the most. Disc 2 is epic as well - no surprises there. Glad to have all these songs officially in one neat set.
I'm just really thankful that we're all so spoiled during this crazy year. This has been her best project rollout since 2005 and it happened in the middle of a pandemic. Thank you, Mariah, for giving us lambs something to help us get through these unprecedented times.

Hey there, Mariah has asked for the lambily's help on twitter. Her tweet reads: "OK Lambs, we need a plan. Who's distracting Taylor's fans and who's in charge of Harry's? I've got Lil Nas X and Luke covered with a new Old Town Road remix. Vote now."
Here is the link to vote for her to win the award. I voted with my many many facebook accounts. It would be an amazing end to this great year (great Mariah-wise).

So Mariah's team has been doing a great job with the roll out and promo. They sent the book to celebs including Bebe Rexa and Lee Daniels. Lee teases that Mariah is getting a movie. Sounds like he wants to be on the helm of that project. I wonder if this will be a mini series or go to the big screen?

I am in with Loverboy again. It's so much better. The [beginning] and end reminds me [of] Fantasy. I also love "Here we go again" and "Mesmerized". But my fav is "Out here on my own". It's a heartbreaking song. Together with the new and old Loverboy it makes the Glitter OST [perfect].

I'm listening to the album right now. The highlights of the album are "Can you hear me", "One Night" and "Mesmerized". The first track, "Here we go around again", is good too, it's great fun, it has great vocals. I can't understand why "Can you hear me" was not included on Emotions, I'm still in awe. I don't think the Firecracker version of "Loverboy" is better, I thought it was a bit of a mess, but there we go, just my opinion. "Mesmerized" has that retro vibe she was into during the elusive chanteuse era. It will certainly be a fan favorite along with "One Night". I'm impressed.

Madonna's biopic (95,890)

Madonna is currently working on her biopic. Looks like she is doing the same thing as Mariah for her promo. She is releasing EPs, Maxi-singles, HQ videos. There was even a demo tape teaser. I have finished the audio book. Now I wonder if Mariah's biopic is being negotiated. Definitely MC has plans to show her story on the big screen.
