Re: Ranking Mariah Carey albums vocally (94,464) (94,469) by Andrew from the United Kingdom
To you and to TJ, I just can't get on board with the vocals from the debut era. I don't much like the album (or the cover). The vocal is too shaky and lacks the warm velvet tone or accessible elasticity that was to come. Even in the live performances, the vocals shake and Mariah's singing style is more about delivery than emotion, I think. And live performances especially make me a little unrelaxed with lyrics ending in "-uh". E.g.: "Treated me kiiiin-duh/ Sweet destinyyyyy-uh".

It surprises me to see so many people like the debut album. It really surprises me to see people vote it on top of the albums that followed for vocals. I never bought it, not once in my life. I pretended that Mariah started with Emotions. Maybe after all this time I should give it another go.

Can I ask you both why the vocals on this particular album were in your top 2? Genuinely. I just don't get it, at the moment. It may help me try to appreciate it. I never wanted to not like it.

Said it before and I'll say it again: you have a superb pop music knowledge and you write really well. You should do reviews for a publication. Martyn did it. Why not you? A.

Re: Ranking Mariah Carey albums vocally (94,466) (94,467) by Andrew from the United Kingdom
I like your game. Best actual vocal performance show Mariah's voice off to an alien from each album, what would you play?

I struggled with some of these - simply because I don't really favour some of the songs, like Fly Like A Bird. And for Merry Christmas I thought I would put O Holy Night for the power or Miss You Most for the emotiveness, but I agree with Jesus Oh What... she sings that masterfully.

1. Mariah Carey (Love Takes Time)
2. Emotions (Till The End Of Time)
3. MTV Unplugged (If It’s Over)
4. Music Box (All I’ve Ever Wanted)
5. Merry Christmas (Jesus Oh What A Wonderful Child)
6. Daydream (I Am Free)
7. Butterfly (Whenever You Call)
8. No.1’s (When You Believe)
9. Rainbow (Against All Odd (Take A Look At Me Now))
10. Glitter OST (Lead The Way)
11. Charmbracelet (Bringin’ On The Heartbreak)
12.a The Remixes Disc 1 (Fantasy (Def Club Mix))
12.b The Remixes Disc 2 (Honey (So So Def Mix))
13. The Emancipation of Mimi (Fly Like A Bird)
14. E=MC2 (I Wish You Well)
15. Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel (I Want To Know What Love Is)
16. Merry Christmas II You (The First Noel)
17. Me. I am Mariah. The Elusive Chanteuse (Heavenly (No Ways Tired/Can’t Give Up Now))
18. Caution (With You)

It's funny thinking about individual track vocals rather than albums as a whole. E=MC2 doesn't seem to be popular for the vocals. But I Wish You Well has a beautiful vocal and tonal quality that wasn't translated across the rest of the music due to the nature of the songs. Imagine if it had been so, instead of the octave jumps Mariah started to rely upon to climax.

William, I'm sorry, forgive me. You know I'm a contentious twat lol. I miss your lists. You can hate me from afar but the world needs your lists, buddy.

Jessie Ware - What's Your Pleasure? (94,465) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
Dua Lipa's Future Nostalgia is one of the best pop albums in recent years. Very unapologetically upfront with its influences and ambitions, it succeeds in living up to the promise of its title. However, as immensely fun as it is, it, just like Lady Gaga's Chromatica, can come across as quite brash and can be quite fatiguing.

Jessie's fourth album, which marks a return to her dance diva roots. What's Your Pleasure? is a mostly disco and 80's synth pop affair which sounds just as homogenous as it is varied. Jessie approaches each track with an elegant soulfulness reminiscent of Lisa Stansfield. It's mostly upbeat, but at just the right tempo that is maintained throughout the album; and even in the slower tracks, the beats take a step back to hushed, simmering grooves and lush instrumentation. The beats, even at their most severe, are hardly pounding or banging. The entire project is ethereal, intoxicating and sophisticated, and Jessie's vocals are strong yet understated, bringing what pop in the last few years has been sorely lacking - finesse. There's a lot to like: a longer version of the classy Spotlight, the cool Step Into My Life, and on the slower side, the hypnotic In Your Eyes, and the lovely closer Remember Where You Are.

Nothing here beats her early hit Running, but this collection is the closest she has gotten to achieving that level of magic.

What would it take for Mariah to make a beat-driven album without any real ballads. If Madonna can pull it off, I don't see any reason why she can't.

TJ that would be exatly my list. I would only switch Nr.1 Mariah Carey with Nr. 2 Music Box.

Ranking Mariah Carey albums vocally (94,462) by Andrew from the United Kingdom
Fly Like A Lamb ranked Mariah's albums on YouTube vocally as below, stating: "Albums with electronic assistance are not particularly high on the list." Ouch. Never seen a dedicated lamb declare something like that so brazenly before.

15. Caution
14. E=MC2
13. Merry Christmas II You
12. Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel
11. Me. I Am Mariah. The Elusive Chanteuse
10. Charmbracelet
9. Rainbow
8. The Emancipation of Mimi
7. Mariah Carey
6. Glitter
5. Butterfly
4. Emotions
3. Daydream
2. Music Box
1. Merry Christmas

Not sure I disagree with the list much at all. Except for maybe moving Mariah Carey further down. The vocals on it are good, but the voice hasn't quite yet reached a fully relaxed tone and makes me on edge. But this list is good.

"Electronic assistance" lol ouch, baby.

Vocal freedom (94,461) by Lafa from Sweden
I caught vocal freedom in the song Butterfly (Classic Bossa Nova) first time when I was 13 years old. Some people don't get what that is though, they have "gone out", their star has ceased to shine. Vocal freedom. Towards an angel forever in flight to heaven.
I slowed down the tempo of the song to album tempo and then FM-enhanced it for another kind of sound. [Webmaster: You already posted this two months ago.]

With You (94,460) by Malcolm from Asia
This here is 100% timeless. But I hope on the next songs she'll release with big name producers she'll decline putting the producer tag and just make some arrangements. Beyonce can do that so I hope Mariah too. That tag can be used in upbeat songs but it's kinda annoying with slow jams like With You.

We're off that tired topic. I'm tryna discuss 8:46 and you want to re heat old tea, that's not tea, because Mimi makes murky her own waters with reality show revisions and Stellar's staged situations. Now that's why Caution flopped, that's tea.

"I'll accept the possibility Mariah was uncomfortable if you can accept the possibility that she wasn't."

I am currently lying in a park sunbathing. As I look across the luscious green grass I see children running and playing each other in the glorious sunshine, smiling, laughing, giggling. Now I could accept the possibility that they are not happy, that they are visibly displaying emotions that they are not feeling. I cannot read their minds, as I am equally unable to read Mariah's mind on that stage at the Academy Awards over twenty years ago. But, on the balance of probabilities, given the simple truths on show, I think it reasonably and objectively safe to say that they are enjoying themselves. As it is possibly safe to say Mariah was more uncomfortable than not.

"And I really have no feelings either way. I'm just calling out nonsense and fabrications from delusional fans."

Before you "call people out" (I dislike this turn of phrase) pay close attention to detail lest you look foolish. As an example, contradicting Terna who (quite rightly) pointed out that Whitney was singing Mariah's part in places was a mistake.

Oh, William, wilt thou ever love me, again?

It's definitely a great track, kind of timeless even and yes, sensual.
Too bad fans came to expect the next #1 yet again and were disappointed when it was neither the big 90s ballad nor the pop banger we always seem to long for.
