Re: Variety - Walter A (91,827) (91,832)

Walter didn't deserve 50% of "AIWFCIY" since Mariah wrote the lyrics by herself, but let's not go crazy here, B. He was instrumental in the creation of the melody/music. Remember he wasn't just sitting there. I think he deserves about 30%. I liked him before he started talking nonsense, saying Mariah made up the word "emblazoned", he should've stuck to playing the piano.

Bieber releasing a new single December 24th could ruin Mariah's chance at being the only artist to have a #1 in 4 separate decades. He usually sells 300k in the first few days. AIWFCIY will do 20k so the only chance we have in our control is streaming. Chart week starts today December 20-26. Don't take anything to chance. Stream like there's no tomorrow.

Giving credit to Tommy and Walter (91,830)
by ADAM from USA
| |
|

I just think Mariah wants history to remember to her as the sole talent behind her music which is understandable. However, in a digital age where everything is recorded, she cannot deny some very important facts. Tommy Mottola - not the record company as she vaguely likes to say - was the one who insisted she record a Christmas album and to keep Hero. Not taking anything away from those masterpieces, those specific decisions were instrumental to her massive success. Walter A is another key producer. Sure Mariah has hits for years on end, but none to the scale of the work MC and Walter made. I really dislike that fans on here, can't listen to the critique for what it is. I love MC as much as everyone else here. That's why we use this site daily. It's a great community. However, I shouldn't have to always preface every statement I make with a mile long page of compliments before I go into critique mode. In closing, I wish Mariah would give these two men the proper credit where it's due. Thank goodness Mariah word of mouth isn't the sole source of history because many lambs would be in a river of denial. My references I speak of are Tommy Motorola's autobiography and Walter A's many interviews throughout the years. Neither of these sources made Mariah out as bad or invalid. In fact, they were complimentary, however facts are facts. The best talents in the world are only that because of the guidance they received along the way. No shade. Just stating facts.

She will never go back with him. It could also be pride. I mean her instrument isn't anywhere where it was when she left him.

I would like to think with all of Mariah's hard earned work, Tommy and Walter might have helped her get her last ever #1. She should call them both and say thank you.

He came across as disingenuous. Mariah gives him the credit he deserves. She wrote the lyrics and created the melody by herself.

I agree with everything you wrote Bill. Her songs with Walter A. are some of my favorites of hers and one can hear with the instrumentals that he's super talented.
Also, I find it really sweet that Tommy and Thalia congratulated her. I mean, so much time has passed. They didn't have the best dynamic but he did do a lot to help her in her career and I'm thankful to him for that. Thalia has been a long time fan of Mariah too. I remember when I was young Thalia mentioned in an interview she was a fan of Mariah during the Daydream era. It's probably not appropriate for her to go around saying that all the time but I don't think she's an evil woman just because she married Mariah's ex-husband.

Personally I think that he misses his relationship with Mariah. But in all fairness she has given him for the work he did on All I Want for Christmas is you she even gave him a mention in the Amazon documentary surrounding the song so his complaint about shutting him out is baseless. I think that he would like a working relationship with Mariah again, however due to whatever he did to Mariah to betray her trust is something many will wonder until she decides to shed some light on it from her perspective. But I am certain, unless a miracle happens their personal, and working relationship is over, and her fans, and supporters need to accept, and respect that.

Oh I agree they were amazing. It's almost as if Merry Christmas should be Mariah feat. The Price Sisters and Melonie as they really made that album what it is. I think the only songs they don't appear on are Miss You Most (at Christmas Time) and God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. That acapella of them on YouTube singing Jesus Oh What a Wonderful Child is beautiful. That gospel, soulful choir sound they brought to the records is very much missed.

Honestly any true fan would respect Mariah's reasons for not wanting to work with Walter at this point in her career. Obviously I think that it is a lot more that meets the eye and why their relationship has gone sour as Mariah has been extremely vague or very minimal hopefully she will go into detail in her fourth coming memoir.

Well, when Mariah mentions in the Amazon mini-doc about the "record company" coming to her about a Christmas album, it was really Tommy who pushed for the idea. So I don't think it has anything to do with a man needing to assert himself or whatever. Geez. It was his idea after all to do a Christmas album. I'm no Tommy fan with how he treated her. But I am a person who gives credit where credit is due.

She is no.1 on iTunes and streaming continues to go up. Hopefully it's strong enough to balance out the expected drop on the 26th, but with no strong competition, it's looking really good so far for her to snatch another iconic record: 1 no.1 in 4 decades.

If Mariah and the Lambily are lucky enough to have AIWFCIY rule the charts for three weeks, then we should prepare ourselves for the understandable possibility that the song could be the first #1 to completely drop off of the Hot 100 the week after. Still gonna be historic, though. Mariah Carey, ladies and gentlemen. Making and breaking records since 1990.

Thank you this_is_qhm from the Philippines, I couldn't agree more, they had magic but Mariah Carey is the real genius to me, it's her melodies, she does the background vocals, she comes up with the arrangements and it's her lyrics. A producer job is really easy when you have a talented artist like Mariah. Mariah has always expressed how much she loves collaborating with other artists, songwriters and producers. Every one of her songs screams Mariah Carey no matter who she works with.

Variety - Walter A (91,815)

Loved this interview. Came across heartfelt, articulate, and sincere. While I was expecting mudslinging and bitter grapes, he articulated his time with Mariah as complimentary, and really respects her status in music history. He obliviously wants to remove the tarnish she has put on his name by ignoring his contribution. I feel really bad. I don't enjoy this either. I hope Mariah being elated with the recent success is in a better place emotionally where she has healed. I work love for them to work together. As much as I enjoy Mariah working with new partners, her work with Walter A is undisputed. The both of them are exceptional together. Not taking anything away from her genius, her shorthand with Walter A and his talents and music history is unmatched.

Along with working with Walter A, I would love for Mariah to work with these ladies again. As talented as Mariah's backup singers currently are, they don't hold a candle to the Price sisters plus MD. The soulful, wall of sound they produce on any record is so beautiful especially against Mariah's airy, girly tone. Everytime I listen to Merry Christmas or Anytime You Need a Friend, I'm reminded of their beautiful work together.

The musical backdrop is definitely genius through and through. No one is denying that. And sure, some fans can be severely unreasonable with the death threats and there's no excuse for such actions. But none of them would be coming for him if it weren't for his shady, flammable statements in his interviews (no one's attacking any of Mariah's past producers who she has had great working relationships with).
She has never denounced his involvement in the song. That is not the same as her skipping over the detail of who produced it, which is the only thing she does in some interviews. She freaking mentioned the old man's name in the Amazon documentary. What more does he want? This is inconsistent behavior for someone who has admitted time and time again how much the song has been a blessing to him. And for him to be agreeing to do these interviews of questionable intentions in a week where it's all about Mariah? Of course he's not gonna be acknowledged as much because Mariah is the artist. As crucial as his contribution was to the song, he's still a behind-the-scenes guy. Dude needs take an entire row of seats to lay on, get a grip of the realistic amount of media attention that is actually afforded to a producer in the music industry and accept that.
No one is downplaying the insanity, torment, safety concerns and inconvenience caused by the death threats that he and his family supposedly receives - they definitely do not deserve that. He also has a right to say his side of the story, but he should also be smart to know that it's his statements that fuel this behavior from these fans. It's not about allowing yourself to be bullied into silence - it's about knowing when to decline interviews or at least avoid answering probing questions that could aggravate the more aggressive, less rational members of the Lambily. Not being constantly mentioned by your previous working partner is a small price to pay especially when you reliably receive royalty paychecks for the material you have worked with together. He should stop being a little bitch and be actually appreciative of the fact that not many producers can say they have such a rare lucrative juggernaut like AIWFCIY, and be careful not to disparage the woman who's partly responsible for actually putting him on the map.
I'm a fan of Walter's work, but I'm a Mariah fan first, and she has yet to say or do anything that invalidates her recollection of the song's composition, so I stand with her on this. He, on the other hand, is proving himself to be just a whiny, bitter, attention-seeker whose appreciation and respect he has always vocalized for Mariah is yet to be reflected on his actions.

With the difference that "AIWFCIY" has an ascending tick on Billboard while "Circles' is stagnant. If Circles goes back to #1 is not because it is ascending, it is because people would've stopped streaming/buying Christmas music after December 25.

This video was fun, festive, and very Mariah and come together very well. Also I have to say that the three night stint on the Late, Late show was another great strategy by MC, and her team that translated very well. MC had fun, and did a great job on each performance reminding us all she is a strong force in the entertainment industry. Lastly I would like to give a huge congratulations to Team MC, on everything that they accomplished during this holiday season, and now they can enjoy the rewards. Also I have to props to our Mariah for spoiling us this year, and also the success that came along with it, she truly deserves it all.

Playing devil's advocate here, it is unfortunate that what should be a happy time of celebration for the pair is mired with Walter receiving death threats online. I mean, come on guys. Death threats? Over a co-writing credit? Grow up. Sometimes being a Mariah fan is embarrassing. Walter played every instrument on that record and gave it the undeniable Christmas sheen. Just listen to the instrumental and tell me that isn't a work of genius. That along with the incredible background vocals from the Price Sisters and Melonie D, and Mariah's flawless and dynamic vocal delivery and brilliant lyric is what created this classic. Everybody involved played their part perfectly.
