New milestone - congrats Mariah (92,042) by John from USA Congrats Mariah, on being the first artist to have a number one in 4 decades. That said, I think most of the argument here on AIWFCIY being number one for a third week and whether that would be considered the first number one of 2020 stems from the confusion between the date of announcement of the upcoming/next chart results and the actual chart date. For instance: Last week for instance, it was announced on December 23, 2019 that AIWFCIY remained at number one for a second week, but it was actually for the chart date of December 28, 2019. Today, December 30, 2019, Billboard announced AIWFCIY is number one again for a third week, but the chart date is for January 4, 2020, effectively making it the first number one of the 2020 calendar year. At least, that's how I understood it. Anyways, congrats again Mariah, and the Lambily. Hope this inspires Mariah to make more timeless music in the future - not just for chart purposes, not just for the Lambs, but for the world at large. She was smart I capitalize on its anniversary in 2019. It was a mistake for her to try to crunch Caution in last year before the holiday rush to AIWFC. But now Mimi can move into her next project unless she wants to start a justice for Caution campaign. And by reliable reports AIW earns the writers 600k annually, each. That's a whole lot in any economy, especially one where music sales barely cover artists expenses and where continuous touring is needed for them to gain or retain wealth. That's rich coming from someone who didn't even read my message correctly or understand it and made a silly knee jerk response off the back of it. Allow me to break it down for you in bite size chunks. 1. Mariah has been in the industry for 30 years. 2. Mariah is 50 years old. 3. 30 years times 2 is 60 years. 4. 50 plus those 30 years is 80. Starting to make sense? If it isn't, concentrate more in mathematics. Mariah is unlikely to still be performing at her current rate at 80 years old (she has already slowed down in the last decade), and therefore it is safe to presume she is indeed in the second half of her career. Again, stating that is a fact and not an insult. Please do go back to my original post and point out where I wrote that being so is such a terrible thing. I'll help you out again with that one as you're struggling. I didn't do that. I was, in fact, paying her a compliment for so successfully riding the crest of the AIWFCIY wave and capitalizing on the song's unending popularity. At no point did I detract from any of her many achievements in the past decade. In future, before you start berating people here's two pieces of advice: be sure you've read and understood what the person has said to avoid making a complete idiot of yourself, and really make sure you knuckle down when you get back to school. I mean, really, he couldn't even get the original release year for "All I Want For Christmas Is You" right. I'm beyond excited for Mariah for having the best Christmas, ever, in 2019. Lambs, we stuck together and did it again. We gave Mariah another record of being the only artist to have a #1 in 4 different decades. Would've been a great single during the Latin explosion in 99 especially since Whitney nabbed a duet with Enrique Iglesias during this same period. Mariah has never been irrelevant and will never be. Literally no artist has accomplished what she has. Are you sure she is not 20? Because 50 has never looked better. Another classic Christmas album, a worldwide anthem Obsessed, song of the summer, #Beautiful. Also 4 great albums, and many more magical moments. The second half of her career made a lot of us lambs. For comparison, Harry Styles who is at #1 has a combined units of 89,000. Either way still a victory for MC, this is the first time the album is in the top 5 since 1994. It is her "I will always love you"/"My heart will go on". Actually I believe Mariah has at least 5 or 6 signature songs that have become a template for other songs. 1990 - Vision of love: The Magna Carta of melisma. The song that real singers study. Especially in the US. 1992 - Hero: Personal, inspirational. 1993-Without You: It is the European version of "Vision of love". It is Mariah's breakthrough on a more global scale. To this day it is the Mariah ballad everybody everywhere knows. 1994 - All I want for Christmas is You: Pretty obvious by now. 1995 - Always be my Baby: The perfect RnB/Pop combo. Another template. One of those cool songs you don't have to be a fan to love. And who doesn't frankly? 2005 - We Belong Together: Same. Actually all I want for Christmas is a song from today in a way. One of the few legends that can say that, lots of teenagers know WBT, speaking mostly for the urban community and the twitter community. WBT is beloved by everyone who hears it who isn't biased towards Mariah or with shitty taste. It's gone viral on twitter more times than I count with millions of views, thousands of retweet's. Mariah is known for this song by many people and it was so for a long time. A signature anything is a product by which someone is identified (it doesnt just have to be by non-fans). I submit that the resurgence in the charts of AIWFCIY has meant younger people are more aware of Mariah than they otherwise would be. It was once thought that Mariah likely had several signature songs. But if it is now the case that one of them has accelerated and made the others like Hero etc. forgotten then so be it. I simply meant to offer that I do not want this to have happened. Being wheeled out once a year for schmaltz feels gimmicky. And Mariah was ever anything but a gimmick. I showed him like 5 more songs but he still liked it the most. I thought for the longest that the song was too simple, too boring basically. Damn was I wrong, the friend started playing it every time we hung out. It made me fall in love with it, some Mariah songs did not age well, especially the catalogue from the 90s. Some of that music doesn’t do anything for me, you can really feel a artist being held captive. The vocals are great, the lyrics are greater but you can hear the soul being disconnected. I'm with you in that it's not my go to album like most, but it's probably her "best" album in terms of being a great representation of her song writing, her vocals, her wall of sound, and the genres she operates in.
