Really B?

For the few who think Mimi is all right, all better all cool, just wait. Even in spite of all the gravitas she's feeling from the icon award, she herself will soon say, "Hold my splash." I see the endgame playing out already. She's never content with an easy landing.

I still believe Everything is Love is underwhelming (and 4, Beyoncé, and Lemonade) but it's a joint album by two of the biggest stars in the world.

Re: Madonna's BBMA performance (89,487) (89,492) by B from USA
This was the point of my message: A joint album by two of the biggest stars in the world has only sold 500,000 copies in the US and we're complaning about an artist selling 92,000 copies of an album released 28 years into her career.

MC Billboard performance (89,491) by Edouard from France
I honestly thought it was good considering she clearly was not comfortable. We know she can do better as she's done it countless times during the Caution tour. But here, her performance was just good. I believe the reason is that she may have been insecure about her reception by the audience. Indeed, it's not the same when you perform in front of your fans. Plus, she did it 100% live with absolutely no backing track and attempted to sing it like the cd instead of re-arranging her vocals. When you think about it her Caution tone was not on display here. Mariah still thinks she has something to prove. That's how professional she is. I love that woman.

I love how Mariah's speech seemed to echo her songs selection during her medley of hits. She started with attitude and a bit of diva-ness, recognized her "mishaps" and the parasites (echoes A No No), got nostalgic expressing how she's grown up with the charts (Emotions and ABMBB), reminded everyone that she basically is the queen of the charts because they basically belong together (WBT) and dedicated the end of her speech to the people who have made her (echoes Hero). I love that woman.

I wonder if Mariah saw the little clip encompassing her career while she while still behind the curtain. I don't know if anyone has noticed but at one point there we can see Tommy Motola in the frame. I wonder if that might have destabilized her. I love that woman.

Re: BBMAs 2019 (89,479) (89,489) by Andrew from London UK
In simple terms, the Icon Award is arguably a pointless award. It is a lifetime achievement award renamed so as to not sound like someone is an old hat. But there is obviously a set list of people who might get it: people with 20 year careers plus who still retain some kind of active recording career now and within that a hierarchy of people who are more successful and/or prominent than the others. So J.Lo fits the bill. But it is questionable whether she should come before Celine and Mariah. In the same sense it is fair to question why Madonna has not been awarded it above everyone else. It is fair to question where the likes of Britney fit into all of this. In short, the list of awardees is already set in stone so it's hardly exciting. It's just a question of in what order they hand it about. That makes it pointless. Arguably.

Madonna's performance was boring (89,488) by Sheila from United States
Simply put. At least Mariah sang "the hits". Madonna's song is her worst single since Ghost Town.

"Caution has now sold over 92,000 copies in the US and 240,000 copies worldwide. Not too shabby when you consider Beyonce and Jay-Z's Everything is Love has sold 500,000 copies in the US and 2 million unit equivalents worldwide.'

Recently, you said that Everything is Love was underwhelming. Now you say it sold 5.5 times more albums than Caution in the USA and 8 times more worldwide. But what amazes me is that you call Caution's sales not too shabby compared to Beyonce. You're really wearing pink glasses.

BBMA vocal analysis (89,486) by Brad from USA
Hi. Hope everyone is being well to one another. I too watched this video online. I can't disagree with it. What I would offer is perhaps what some on here have witnessed too. Just four weeks prior to the BBMAs in Connecticut on the Caution tour, her vocals were live and far more consistent, perhaps relaxed and energized. I don't know fully what to make of this. I do sense that in the weeks since wrapping up the North American leg she was not resting her voice and judging by her tweets, seemed to be up late the night before the BBMAs tweeting about the birthday festivities for dem kids. I dunno. As we all know, she felt nervous that night too. Clearly, she should care for her voice and practice good vocal hygiene. It's her gift from God. Be well to yourself and others.

Re: Madonna's BBMA performance (89,481) (89,485) by B from USA
I'm dead. I found Madonna's performance underwhelming. I can't believe she spent seven million dollars of her own money on it. Guess it proves that she does indeed spend her own money on her videos in addition to the budget the label gives her.

I think Mariah's Billboard performance, flaws and all, will humanize her to the public like her coming forward with her struggle with bipolar II disorder. If she had given an amazing performance, like she does when performing for her fans, they would've claimed she lip synced. I still believe Mariah will make another comeback.

Madonna is following Mariah's lead with the roll-out of her new album and her upcoming tour. Like Mariah, Madonna is releasing four teaser singles before the release of her new album and she's embarking on a theater tour. Guess Mariah's Caution is indeed the new blueprint for aging legacy acts.

Caution has now sold over 92,000 copies in the US and 240,000 copies worldwide. Not too shabby when you consider Beyonce and Jay-Z's Everything is Love has sold 500,000 copies in the US and 2 million unit equivalents worldwide.

Article: Madonna reignites feud with Mariah Carey (89,484) by Betty from Canada
Madonna was probably just jealous of all the love and attention MC received for her career, performance and speech at the BBMAs. But I am sure that Madonna will get her turn too eventually with the success and career that she has. She just needs to learn to wait for her turn graciously though.

You're right, she doesn't seem like s nice person. Madonna kind of scares me. One of my first memories is of my aunt and her husband watching a Madonna concert around 1989 and my mom walking in and yelling at them for letting me watch it. I used to listen to the Immaculate Collection on my walkman because my mom didn't like her. Haha.

Madonna's BBMA performance (89,481) by Dove from United States
That was actually the first time I heard her new song and I kinda liked it. The holograms were cool and Maluma (yum). But the first thing that came to mind when I watched it was Disco Dottie. Especially the part where she's on top of the table doing the butterfly. Sorry if I offended anyone.

Out of Love song (89,480) by RibbonB from USA
I'm so obsessed with this Alessia Cara song. So beautuful, subtle, sweet and timeless. Co written with Alessia and producer-songwriter Rick Nowels. I mentioned him in this board a year or two ago as someone Mimi could benefit from working with, so I wasn't surprised when I saw his caliber of a name associated with the song. Classy, timeless material would do Mimi good and a big voice isn't required for a great song. I'm not sure how well this song charted but it's played multiple times daily on AC radio in Los Angeles.

When you look at the recipients of the Icon Award, Madonna is a pretty obvious omission though. It is equally as eyebrow raising that J Lo was awarded it ahead of Madonna. Madonna has been very influential and prominent on the charts for decades, and is one of the few musicians who literally everybody in the English speaking world has heard of (alongside Elvis and Michael Jackson). I don't think she warranted it over Mariah of course, as MC owned the charts throughout the 90s and inspired and set the template for a generation of female singers after her just as Aretha did before her. But yeh, I can understand why she'd be a bit pissed. If she's awarded it next time though it will lose its impact as it would seem like a reaction to her upset, which is never good. But ho hum. I really haven't paid attention to Madonna since I was in like, 7th or 8th grade when she used to be popular, so I didn't hear of her tirade until now.

"Madonna reminded me of the old lady from the movie Studio 54 with Ryan Phillipe." Haha I remember the woman from the movie. Lol. I also think Madonna showed again that she's not a nice person. Bitter and envious.

BBMAs 2019 (89,476) by Dove from United States
I hardly watch awards shows anymore but I watched the whole thing because I didn't know what time Mariah was coming on. Here are my observations: I liked Taylor's performance, it was fun and colorful and energetic. Halsey = poor man's P!nk. Ciara = poor man's Janet. Ariana wasn't trying to be Mariah for once so I appreciated that. Also noticed her voice sounded weaker than it did on performances from her first album. Kelly has a strong and powerful voice but the lyrics to her songs are consistently bad and she needs to keep her shoes on. Madonna reminded me of the old lady from the movie Studio 54 with Ryan Phillipe. (Also, she's gotten Icon awards before so she needs quit being bitter.) BTS - been there, done that with boy bands from the 90's and 2000's. I was impressed with Paula - great energy and lip synching done right. Mariah's performance had a few hiccups but I still loved it because I love her and I was moved by her humbleness and nostalgia and willingness to sing live even though her voice is not as predictable as it once was.

Yes, the youngsters are so boring to watch. Bad entertainers and definitely no artists. I also think since 2010 it got worse and worse. Those "kids" will never understand that with talent you don't need to shock or copy. If I watch the charts I'm shocked about the songs. It almost sounds all the same. No heart, no real emotion on it. I wonder if the music biz will have another era of great singers like in the 80ies and 90ies. I don't think so.

I agree. However I found Madonna's performance absolutely vulgar. I am so fed up with the S&M and religious references. She has played that card for way too long. If you take away all the dancers, the holographic crap and the sleazy dancing all you get is a very mediocre singer. Mariah looked absolutely classy (and yes, her sartorial choices aren't always the best) and she owned the stage and the room with every person in it. Madonna nagging on Twitter about how she should have received the Icon Award shows her true character. I never liked her as a person, once respected her as a pop star but the differences with a true iconic star like Mariah were never more blatant than on that evening. Noticed how Maluma looked at Mariah? Poor guy had to sing with the old bat lol.

BBMAs 2019 (89,473) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
If there's anything the BBMAs 2019 has taught us, it's that the latest generation of performers (2010 onwards) apparently suck. Their performances are either uninspired, forgettable or are way too gimmicky and smack of trying too hard with the shock tactics. You can clearly see the difference between the Ariana, BTS and Halsey performances and the artists that debuted in the previous decade like Ciara, Taylor and Kelly. Even more so when compared with veterans such as Madonna, Paula, and Mariah, whose stage presence alone make it clear why they have lasted as long as they do. Mariah didn't even have to move much or walk and yet you couldn't look away from her. Madonna incorporated CGI imagery and basically turned Maluma into a pretty prop. Paula's performance clearly shows that she is truly a choreographer, who, at 56, moves much better than Janet who is almost 4 years her junior. Those 3 saved the night from becoming totally boring. They are just on another level and have a better understanding of the stage than the youngsters.

I take Baldrian if it's needed. But I guess that's nothing that could help a singer. I think the same like Licia as long as Mariah knows what's not working and she really gives her best it makes her very human and "grown-up". But I also wonder if a superstar like Mariah can work a little bit on some things so that she does not need to be too nervous.

Re: BMA vocal analysis (89,465) (89,471) by MusicfanJ from Germany
Mariah was very confident during the MSG concert in 96. That's how it looked. I do believe you can have stage fright at the beginning and still be confident after a few minutes. At MSG Mariah knew she was the best singer at that time. She knew she was on top and nobody could come close.
