Re: When You Believe theory (89,239) (89,252)

Great theory. I remember when I heard "When you believe" for the first time, I felt disappointed. The song is good but is not amazing or memorable (in my opinion). Finally, I got angry because Whitney's voice sounded better.

I disagree on some points: - "There for me" is awful. - I like "4real4real" but it's good as a b-side. - "100%" is boring. - "Runway" is not good at all.

Not sure I quite agree with your take on Butterfly's promotion. It had numerous videos commissioned to promote the album at huge expense: Honey, Honey remix, Butterfly, My All, My All remix, The Roof and Breakdown. Saying there was no promotion isn't right. Honey had a massive worldwide push the same as all her other lead releases from her albums. Yes, the US only saw two singles commercially released. But the aforementioned tracks were all on rotation at MTV and numerous radio stations. Internationally other singles were released. Mariah herself cited the reason for only releasing two commercial singles, they didn't want to break her streak of number ones she'd had since Fantasy. Don't forget her competition was Whitney and she had a 7 consecutive number one streak. The Butterfly tracks, whilst all great, were a step away from what she was commercially successful at previously, so the label's caution is understood. She was heading into unchartered waters and was their biggest asset. It's like sending your best ship out full steam ahead into a stormy sea. Like it or not, the reason Butterfly didn't match Music Box or Daydream was, simply, because it wasn't Music Box or Daydream.

Since I first heard this song "Too Deep", by dvsn (which is a duo founded by the "GTFO" producer Nineteen85), I thought: "That's exactly what Mariah should be doing." Something with strong vocals, melodic, sexy and with gospel choirs. "GTFO" is good, but it's not exactly what I expected from a collaboration with Nineteen85. It lacks climax. But it was a nice attempt.

Thanks for that, based on post in regards to MHWGO and WYB and Mariah's relationship with Sony post Daydream helps me put a lot of things into better perspective. When Mariah was talking about not getting the support and push from the label during that up until she left her claims were dismissed and she was labeled many things but for Tommy himself to admit that shady things were going on behind the scenes speaks volumes to me I don't know about anyone else.

Mimi Outta My Head and Into Yours (89,247)

I was listening to Khalid's new album, and while listening to Outta My Head, I thought to myself, how Mariah could actually sound great singing this song - either by herself or in a duet with Khalid.
Question to you guys: Which song in the last 10 years would you think could've been a hit for Mariah, would be a good fit for her current voice, or would be a song she could interpret better?

Article: Mariah Carey turns either 49 or 50 today (89,246)
by Courtney from USA
| |
|
|
People assume Mariah was born March 27th 1969 because that's what she originally said in her first People magazine interview in 1990. While promoting her debut album the first issue of People magazine was published the week ending March 9th 1974. Also in those days it was harder to physically check someone's birth certificate or baptismal record unless it was needed to sign them up for school or school sanctioned clubs and sports.

Prince of Egypt hasn't matched Titainic commercial success. Prince of Egypt had a mediocre box office, and Titanic was the highest grossing movie at that time. "When you believe" has some promotion, but it was of a different scale than My Heart. It was harder to coordinate 2 superstars' schedules (I remember only 2 live performances - Oprah and Oscar's) and the song and the song is not as great (IMHO). And, if you remember, all post-Daydream singles released half-assed support from Sony, because Mariah rebelled. Butterfly didn't receive the same level of success as Daydream or Music Box because Sony has invested in promotion significantly less. It had only 2 commercial singles released in US. Butterfly has/was certified 5x platinum in the US. Outside of the country about 10 million copies were sold, which is not that far from Daydream overseas sales. Sony has turned to Celine instead, because they needed an artist appealing to wide audiences, they were scared of Hip-Hop. It was mentioned in the Hitman (Motorola's autobiography).

The queen (89,244)

Personally I feel like Mariah is the queen of song because she can create amazing melodies, she is capable of writing brilliant lyrics and she can grab you in four minutes and mesmerize you with a killer combination of an amazing intro, a killer bridge, and an ending that makes you want more. Her gift to create songs are truly amazing and unparalleled.

I believe that whether she split from her husband or not she was going to ride the wave of her winning formula because it has helped bring her success beyond her comprehension. Also, she is in a lane all by herself and she is winning. I am certain Columbia is not going to allow her to mess with her winning formula, she is going to ride this formula until she can not benefit from it anymore. The masses will definitely pay very close attention to the new album based off of curiosity alone to see if she will talk about the breakdown of her marriage.

Oh my gosh, Till the End of Time to me has one of the most emotionally invoking bridges ever. Ever. That's one thing I've always loved about MC: her ability to tap into our emotions with her lyrics and then sing in a way that releases those emotions.
Oh my Can't Let Go's intro proves you don't need You're So Cold-type belts to produce such powerful emotions. I always hated the radio edit cut off that long intro. One of my favorite ballads. Top 5.

Plus, and no offence, but the song really isn't all that. It really does make a difference when MC writes a song vs when she doesn't. It fits the film but as a standalone song for the charts, I'm afraid "that's a no no".

When You Believe theory (89,239)
by Randy from USA
| |
|
|
Since Hurricane Caution has blown over and has been downgraded to a cloud with rain floplets, I have a theory about When You Believe. I think that after the success of My Heart Will Go On from Titanic and it's ability to push two albums to 8 times platinum each, they thought that When You Believe with two divas could push the sales of three albums. But what I think is that Clive, Tommy and Jeffrey were a bit hasty in this pipe dream. Firstly, both artists were coming off albums that didn't match up to their previous blockbusters. The Preacher's Wife didn't sell as well as Waiting To Exhale or the Bodyguard. And as much as it pains me to say it, Butterfly didn't match the sales of Daydream or Music Box. So to me these women, while superstars, weren't necessarily gonna draw the same amount of buyers to the CD store as Celine who was coming off a hit album that won album of they year. Secondly, MC and Whitney were both in a vocal decline. The song, while lyrically amazing, doesn't soar as it would have had it been recorded in 95 or 96. And Whitney was a master of runs so she started running all over the place and lowering the keys to her songs when her voice started to fray. When MC's voice changed, she just looked like a deer in headlights on stage. Needless to say it wasn't a good time. So when the song came out and made it to number 15, it didn't help either album. Sure #1s sold about 4 million but it was on the strength of the actual compilation itself. My Love is Your Love went on to sell 4 or 5 million but it was on the strength of subsequent singles such as Heartbreak Hotel, the title track, and It's Not Right But It's OK, which won Houston a Grammy. Basically, I hate to say it but When You Believe was a relative flop. And it shouldn't have been a surprise. And it slowed the momentum of both MLIYL and #1s. Columbia should have led with I Still Believe or the Bryan McKnight diet. And Houston should have led with It's Not Right But It's OK. Starting with When You Believe caused MLIYL to debut at #13 and #1s to debut at #4, both albums coming in lower that week than stars with lesser careers and longevity: Alainis Morisette and Jewel. Thoughts?

Bonustracks among Mariah's best (89,238)
by Edouard from France
| |
|
|
I absolutely adore most of Mariah's bonustracks/unrealeased/B-sides. The others, I just love them IMHO. - "Do you think of me" is better than any ballad on Emotions but CLG, TTEOT and TW. - "Everything fades away" is better than any ballad on Music Box but Hero, AYNAF. - "Slipping away" is almost as good as ABMBB (that's not possible, though). - "There for me" (which clearly is a bonus track from Rainbow) is better than "After tonight". - "Miss you" would have been my fave uptempo had it been included on Charmbracelet. And I love IKWYW and There Goes my Heart . - On TEOM, I must say, outside of the bonus tracks included on the deluxe edition, the only bonus track that I believe to be very, very good is "When I feel it". - 4real4real is better than many songs on E=MC2, especially "I stay in love". - "100 percent, I mean" come on. And what about Skydiving. - "Runway" is a pure marvel. Basically Mariah's bonus tracks are just as good as her album material. it never feels sub par. On the contrary, some of them are among her best work.

Madonna is always collaborating with someone new. I would like Mariah to collab with a country artist. Old Town Road is one of the hottest tracks I've heard in awhile, and hopefully Mariah can branch out to that genre too.

Although it pissed a few people off because it's a performance they already saw, a story she repeated when she was pregnant with Blue, and songs she's already released, it was genius. I'm not a huge fan either, but I give her props on these moves.

I was just about to say, "What about those bridges?" Lol. Alone In Love, IDWC, Till the End of Time, and Can't Let Go. There's more but that's all I can think of right now. I agree she's the queen of all of it. If that intro doesn't pull you in, that middle will catch your interest. If the middle doesn't work , that outro is sure to get you.

Article: Why veteran artists should stick to three new songs (89,229)

I completely disagree with the article. The whole point of any tour is to promote a latest effort. Don't get me wrong, of course it's great to hear the hits from the past, but personally, Caution is fantastic and tons of people aren't going to mind hearing more than three songs from it.
