Re: Tupac obsessed (89,170) (89,177)

Tupac is ok, I get that he is an icon to many, but the recent shirt sightings and this tweet from Shawn make it seem obsessive. I even get that she is proud of the nude in the bathtub picture that she owns, but it's not as if they had a relationship, so the ongoing interest seems odd. I said what I said and it is what it is. Let's see how she spins it, in her own words.

I thought so too until I looked it up and it was for Up. So she has 3 consecutive albums certified Diamond - the first for any artist.

Why hasn't Mariah's self titled debut been certified diamond by the RIAA? I thought Shania only had two diamond albums The Woman in Me and Come on Over. What's the third?

BBMA (89,172)

Mariah sings. The hateful people in this board: She is over, she can't hit any notes, she cant put on a show. The press on Mariah singing: "She is still the same Mimi you knew 30 years ago - glamorous, glittered, lovable and unquestionably talented. Fifteen albums in, Carey seems to be deploying her sheer vocal talent more strategically, hitting the stratospheric high notes just often enough to remind everyone she still can. Of course, clothes, hair and makeup are just a sidelight to the real attraction: Carey's legendary five-octave voice, which sounded amazing. Through a career-spanning set, that voice floated, soared and effortlessly climbed." The Lambs/people who go to her shows: Damn she sounds even better live, she still got it. PS: She will kill it and I'm so happy for her.

It's fine that you don't understand Mariah's obsession with one of the most iconic, influential and successful rappers of all time. His mother was an important activist in the civil rights movement, so he grew up with that "woke mentality" so he spoke out on a lot of the issues destroying the projects including police brutality. He was a master of storytelling, his words were so raw yet built on education and history. I have probably seen more than 100 interviews with him, he was more than a thug, the way he inspires millions of people around the world still to this day is amazing. Hiphop is also the #1 genre in America, he means so much to most of the hiphop community, 80% of them would put him top 3 of the greatest hiphop artists of all time. I can honestly right many essays and bring his perspective into it, he was ahead of so many people. What Mariah means to singers is what 2pac does for everyone who raps, he sang out our truth. And he will forever be remembered. The king of hiphop/rap. PS: He was a rapper, producer, writer, director, actor, philosopher, he also was a student at the Baltimore School of Performing Arts, he danced ballet and he had such a revolutionary spirit.

I can understand her "obsession" with Tupac. The man was a true artist and yes good-looking. At my youth everybody was listening to Tupac (the cool kids) and his hits "California Love" and "Changes" were huge here. I think he was simply genius with his songwriting and had really something to tell. Maybe Mariah had a little crush on him. I wish they had recorded something together or at least a remix. Nothing against ODB, but Mariah and Tupac would have been great too.

That's all fine, well and good, but still doesn't explain her quirky obsession with him. I'm sure it will feature prominently in her memoirs.

Great plan I might say. But hopefully someone will send this to her manager. I’m pretty sure they would want to highlight her five octave voice as what was shown on that Billboard clip so they might choose to have her sing ballads. Here’s hoping for an outstanding memorable performance.

Proceed with caution (4): let's get to work (89,167)
by Ethan from United States

It's been a while since I last posted so here it goes.
1) 3rd Diamond. It'd be great for Mariah's debut album to hit diamond by the 2019 BBMAs or maybe next year for its 30th anniversary. It's the closest one (9x platinum and counting already) out of all the albums to get certified. So perhaps this is the next campaign: #MariahCareyDiamond or something along that line. She'd be the 2nd woman besides Shania Twain if it came true.
2) Caution World Tour. I'd love to see her team puts up some lyrics on the big screen while she's singing the new songs like A No No and Portrait so that the audience can see and/or follow along, especially for those who are not familiar with the new materials. I hope she'll include The Distance on the European leg. I don't mind she replaces GTFO with it.
3) The Grammys. The eligibility period is 11-month this year (cut off at end of August 2019). Hopefully, the other divas release their albums starting in September. As the critically acclaimed album, Caution has a chance to score major nominations, especially the major fields open up to 8 nominees, unless the Recording Academy holds a grudge against Mariah since she has been quite vocal lately about her disappointment (and shade) with the organization. Yes, I'm aware that it was not commercially successful, but let's look at Beck's Morning Phase and Kacey Musgraves' Golden Hour. I know it's a debate on here about hits and sales, but we need to be honest with albums like Solange's A Seat at the Table and Janelle Monae's Dirty Computer. Look them up and compare to Mariah's Caution. I think some of her biggest competitors are Robyn's Honey and Ariana's Thank You, Next (commercially successful and critically acclaimed). If she gets some major nominations and performs, please keep it simple and sing Portrait with lyrics displayed on big screen (a combo of Brandi's and Kacey's performances at last year's show). Maybe she's already done with the Grammys and not even interested in giving it a 5th time.

Tupac was a beast, died too soon and was an icon. Before the airwaves were littered with rappers, there weren't many that actually made hits out of their plights. He spoke to a generation of young black men who were discarded and he was a sex symbol to young black women (and men). That's without saying that his actual bars were genius. "Brenda's Got a Baby", "Dear Mama", "Keep Ya Head Up", "Ghetto Gospel"... all songs that were addressing the culture, disparity and issues that were troubling the black race. He has a few bangers in there too but that wasn't his discography. He didn't make party music. So, yeah, he was talented and a pioneer.

I think she'll be in fine form during her Billboard performance. She slayed the Caution World tour and I have no doubt she'll slay her medley. Plus she'll be well rested since the North American leg of the tour is over.

"She released a single called #Beautiful with Miguel that wasn't really a hit per se"? Roger was reaching with this statement. #Beautiful hit #1 in 40 countries, peaked at #15 on the Hot 100, and was certified platinum.

The Caution Tour should have prepared her for this moment. Once and for all, just shut down all these folks who say you can no longer sing. If only she could do the remix versions and have a special guest appear.

Tupac obsessed (89,158)
by RibbonB from USA

I know it was Tupac's birthday recently, but what is with the industry's Tupac glorification, or fascination? I suppose he was talented, etc. But not that talented. Specifically, Mimi wore his image in a shirt for my birthday celebration, and she wore that same image during the Christmas holidays. Her nephew Stan even tweeted the lame story she always tells about the time she and Tupac said hello at a 1996 award show. I find the story odd and even strange to often reminisce about a man who has actually been with someone she doesn't seem to care for like Madonna. The industry in general seems to be fascinated by certain dead artists.

I kind of like how you are thinking. She is currently on tour though and appears to be singing mostly live. So if she's feeling brave, I think she should do 1-7, then give a diva vocal moment to end it. So after all the uptempo, fade to black, VOL intro sounds, spotlight, first verse, and then before she does that final VOL run she can stop at "all that you turned out to..." and then do the thing where she inhales deeply and the music stops and she looks down in false modesty as everyone is screaming out "yass girl sang it", she can milk that moment for an extended dramatic pause, then she can go into the final run. She can even do the chopped up staccato runs that are easier for her. It won't really matter if she milks the moment correctly. Then again, it might be safer to do the more somber "Looking In" outro if her voice just isn't there. I really like your idea.

Ok, I kind of see the point and maybe I have to take it back a little bit. BB is about sales. But for some reason this constant mentioning of her achievements just doesn't sit well with me. Didn't they have that as the intro to some of the Elusive Chanteuse shows in Asia. That was weird.
