You seriously want to start this discussion, again? Is there more to explore? Is there still stuff to dissect? Are we all again going to give our opinions on what happened to Mariah's voice in 1998? Are you thinking this message through? I got exhausted just by reading it.

Yes, when I first started to become a fan of Mariah in 1998, Daydream was the first album I bought besides Butterfly, and after that, Music Box. Everything Fades Away was my favourite Mariah song for the beginning years of my fandom.
It was so dreamy, always listened to it maybe twenty times in bed before going to sleep. The song induced such good feelings in my body.

Agree. It's the same for God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman (which wasn't designated a bonus track, it was simply the ending of Merry Christmas, again, everywhere except America). Jesus Oh What a Wonderful Child is a brilliant, amazingly delivered performance, but I loved how the acapella of GRYMG dials it all back down and again leaves the album on a somewhat haunting note. Why settle for one Mariah when you can twenty of them harmonising with each other? During Rainbow promo interviews, MC said it was her first album that ended on a "happy note", which indicates she may have viewed EFA as the closer for Music Box, much as some people may not want to hear it. I don't buy this whole Tommy "demanding" songs be removed notion as there is zero evidence for that. If that was the case, EFA wouldn't have been on the Hero single nor on more releases of Music Box than it wasn't. As for Slipping Away, arguably Long Ago has the exact same theme and message and that remained on the album without a problem. I prescribe to the theory that it was in fact replaced with Melt Away, which was originally planned by Mariah and Babyface to be part of Waiting to Exhale.

Speaking of Slipping Away, Dave Hall the co-writer, was married to Wanda Sykes at that time. Maybe it was about his marital discord. Kidding, who knows? But his is a name we rarely hear these dsys, yet his accomplishments are impressive.

No, I was stating what she needs to be doing in order for the song to go somewhere today or any of her songs. And that the video and tour will not do anything to help the song. That's all.

"Just turn a-rowond." EFA is the perfect ending to the album because the album is almost one non-stop powerhouse vocal. EFA is as if Mariah is leaving the studio and driving into the sunset streets with the top down chilling out and being pensive. The piano melody is haunting especially when accompanied with "It only fades, it only fades..." floating over it. "Every everythi-yeng fades awaaaay" and "Nothing ever stays the same babe, nuth-ing ever stays the same" make the song worth listening to alone.

Leave MC alone (88,531)
by Randy from USA

I'm tired of this stupid ass idea that MC can't sing like she used to because she's 48. MCs voice started changing in live performances in 98 and was in a downward trajectory after that with a few glimpses of brilliance randomly peppered throughout. In 98 she was 28. What's the excuse for that?

Watching MC for the first time tomorrow (88,530)

Finally going to see MC live for the first time tomorrow - and I've been a fan since 1990 hahaha. Watching her four rows away from the stage. So excited since I wanna see her sing 8th Grade live (just has a personal meaning for me). Maybe she'll sing The Beautiful Ones since this is Prince's hometown as a sort of tribute, but that would be a long shot, lols.

For me Everything Fades Away is Music Box. The words bonus track never meant anything as it just felt part of the album. I think us Brits had it good with it being on the album and hearing it as a whole. It’s the perfect ending to the album

In my opinion, it would sound out of place on Music Box. Music Box is a pop album and closing the album with an R&B ballad wouldn't work. Maybe Everything Fades Away was the first song Mariah wrote and recorded for the album before Tommy and the other Columbia executives demanded that she make a more pop leaning album after Emotions underperformed compared to her debut. Or it was written during the Emotion sessions and not recorded until she began work on Music Box. Maybe she'll address why these beloved songs were relegated as b-sides in her memoirs. All that's ever been said is that the were deemed too urban to be included on their perspective albums. We all know Slipping Away wasn't included on Daydream because it addressed the martial discord between her and Tommy.

I didn't come with an explanation for why Americans who like the song do it, it was an explanation for why the Americans who don't like the song, don't like it.
You know, you can't use the same explanation for why some people like tall people to explain why some people like short people.
So, for the Americans who don't like EFA, it can be explained by cognitive dissonance. One of the reasons for why some Americans do like the song, might be that they don't have cognitive dissonance in this particular case. But further explanation I don't have for the time being.

It was on the US Hero single, at least the maxi single. Just saying. Personally I didn't care for it when I was young, I also thought it was boring. As the years have gone by I can appreciate it more. I can see how it would be a good album closer. With that said, I think All I Ever Wanted is a good album closer as well, with its grandness and all. Hmm. I'll go listen to them both now.

I guess I love EFA because I heard it in 93, when it was released in Europe. I was 16 at the time and everything Mariah did was just right (except for one or two songs on Emotions). I have never thought that the song isn't similar to the rest of the album. Maybe fans in the USA have the same nostalgic feeling about the US version without EFA.

I did and I do. In 1997 I had managed to collect every cd single Mariah had released in the US however I lost all of them in a house fire. After sharing this story a special member of this board kindly sent me his collection of cd singles and completed my collection again. However, in October I had to move because of an electrical fire and all of cds are in storage. He's a kind soul who I will not name because I would hate for someone to take advantage of his kindness and generosity.

It was released as the b-side of Hero so the majority of US fans heard it the day the Hero single was released since we always rushed to the records stores to purchase Mariah's singles like they were albums, lol.

Water your thoughts: leave Mariah alone (88,519)

I love this article. I recently watched Mariah's appearance on Lettermam from 1994 when she sang Anytime You Need A Friend. During her interview she mentions how cold it is in the studio and how the cold affects the voice which I plan on using this Christmas when my friends troll my Facebook page with her Rockefeller performance.

"Society needs to stop pitting women against each other"? What a load of crap. Women pit themselves against other women for women are generally jealous and bitchy as a gender. Mariah has done it galore, many times over. Society needs to stop intersectional victimisation. As far as I can see, Mariah Carey, Ariana Grande, et al., are not victims. They are the products of a society that rewards talent based upon merit.

The show was fantastic. Loved having giant screens showing graphics which gave Mariah an updated look; very much like Caution. Besides a few moments where the backing track kicked in, which only us lambs can really notice, she sounded and looked great. Loved hearing these songs live that I didn't think I'd ever be able to - AYNAF, YDKWTD, and Last Night A DJ Saved My Life. It seemed like the audience was split half and half between casual fans and diehards, which could explain the lesser engagement during the Caution moments. What a fantastic experience, and the overall sentiment as everyone was leaving the theatre was "wow she was great".
