My dad gave a listen to The Roof in the car once and he thought it was "hypnotic".

Saudi threats (87,813)
by RibbonB from USA

Mimi has been doing her thing for years, ignoring politics and whatnot. I don't judge her, but I always hope she and her team take threats seriously. I worry for her on many of these excursions. When I heard she was going on this one I really hope she would at least not take her children into such a zone. Wishing her well.

Saudi Arabia (87,812)

My response was more to the whole thread in general but especially the post saying places like Norway, Spain, and the US are as bad as places like Saudi Arabia; and the person saying people feel good about themselves for sharing information on the internet. I don't believe people should keep quiet when they know something is wrong and people communicate with each other mostly on the internet these days.

Article: ISIS call for terror attack on Mariah Carey concert (87,811)
by Geronimo from USA
| |
|
|
Wow. It's too bad Mariah did not take the chance to cancel her show for an uplifting and empowering reason culminating in a teachable moment. Now she will have to do it for security reasons. Or maybe she will go through with the show anyway and be heralded as brave and fearless.

I don't really understand all this drama all over social media about Mariah performing in Saudi Arabia tomorrow. She has fans all over the world she is allowed to perform for them. People love her all over.

Saudi Arabia (87,809)
by Dove from United States

It's important to take a stand against unacceptable behavior in general, whether it be on the internet or in real life. Everybody can't know 100% of everything but we can educate each other. Being more informed can help us determine what's important to us.
I don't know much about Saudi Arabia but from what I do know, it reminds me of the place in A Handmaid's Tale where they're doing terrible things (especially to women) but go on living as if they're doing nothing wrong. Terrible things happen everywhere but, for example, in the US people still have rights and even the poorest people don't have it that bad (compared to other countries) because there are lots of safety nets. Not saying it's easy, just relatively better. I know there are countries who take care of their people better than the US but I don't think it's that bad here. I don't feel unsafe or desperate to leave.

I just played "The Roof" for a friend recently and he said, "Wow this is Mariah? It sounds so modern." He liked the song/production and he's not even a fan.

Proceed with caution: Saudi threats (87,807)
by Ronnie from California
| |
|
|
Why is no one talking about the alleged terrorist threats? There are allegations that terrorist groups were planning to break havoc at her concert. Whether or not the allegations are false, it is concerning. Given the circumstances, threats are a possibility that I'm sure Mariah and her team acknowledged prior to signing her up. But now that those allegations have been put out there (regardless of validity), it has the power to inspire others to follow through. It's terrible but it is also the truth. And plus, these parallels are getting ridiculous.

I'm so sorry for what Jussie endured. No one deserves this type of treatment. I'm praying for him. There aren't enough curse words to express how I feel about those two cowards who hurt him. Sad that in 2019 stuff like this is still happening.

by Geronimo from USA

In response to the entire thread and not QHM in particular, I would like to say that taking an all-or-nothing approach to artists and social consciousness makes no sense. The purpose of selecting and highlighting particular cases of human rights abuses in nations and kingdoms with extreme wealth inequality has to do with being awake, responsible, and dedicated to spreading awareness about the connections between particular abuses in the world and in one's own country while responding to the global economic habits that tie people together. It is more art than science.
Since we are not talking about punishing Mariah Carey but questioning her and awaiting her thoughtful response, it is meaningless to say or suggest that unless every artist answers for every performance location choice in terms of the injustices committed in the history of those locations then no social questions can be fair or meaningful. Unfortunately, not everyone is capable of thinking about those things. Some people literally want nothing more from creative artists than escape and catharsis. Clearly many of that type of person is a Mariah Carey fan. Mariah has benefited a great deal, it seems, from remaining quiet but pleasant about issues that her background has not equipped her to address in public.
Still, I think U.S. American men and women who are artists that claim to bear a social responsibility and say they care about fairness, tolerance, etc. can rightly be called upon to explain why they choose to entertain royalty universally exposed expanding and covering the kinds of human rights abuses opposed by the historical figures they publicly admire. Mariah Carey respects the legacies of MLK, Nelson Mandela, and the activism (it seems) of Colin Kaepernick. She has also advocated for women to be recognized for their songwriting even if they are not known for performing with non-vocal instruments.
So, it is not a case of arbitrary or selective outrage to ask Mariah Carey to explain why she volunteers to perform in a kingdom that opposes the issues she publicly (if generically) supports. It makes sense to wonder if there is a personal disconnect between empty cute optimism and pre-adolescent cliches about individual "Hero"-ism covered in rainbows and butterflies. People certainly get caught up in hypocritical digital heroism and fall in love with their own outrage. But asking a very wealthy Afro-Venezuelan artist born in the United States to join people talking a symbolic stand against the Saudi dynasty while the U.S president tries to exchange dollars for good sense is far from hypocrisy.

What you are talking about was true in the past. Sami and Kven people even have their own parliament now. Not that you won't find Sami people beeing treated badly by someone today, but what you are saying sounds a bit ridiculous to be honest.
Maybe you should visit the Northern Norway to see for yourself, not just read in the history books. Comparing how Sami people are treated in Norway today with the conditions in Saudi Arabia is preposterous.

The fact that MC was able to sample a popular hip hop track like Mobb Deep Shook Ones part II and make an amazing R&B track that told a hood love tale and the video in my opinion is total heaven I have to disagree with those that said The Roof or Butterfly is overrated without Butterfly we would have not gotten Mariah the artist don't get me wrong MC was already great but Butterfly took that greatness to another level beyond just balladeer Mariah the entire Butterfly era was Mariah artist being born and for some coming alive but for those who feel otherwise I still got love for ya.

But it's a difference if a country has no human rights at all and is living like we still have the middle age. I wouldn't go to a place like that, not even for money. To compare Saudi Arabia with Spain and Australia is ridiculous. Every country has it's own problems for sure, especially with politics. But again, to have no human rights at all is another thing.

Request: Butterfly (Classic Bossa Nova) (87,791)
by Lafa from Sweden

I have a small request here. To me, Butterfly (Classic Bossa Nova) is the most beautiful song. I slow down the tempo in audacity, but it causes a lowering of quality (small cuts, scratches). Is there anyone who can do this professionally and succeed?

by John from USA

Joachim: Until reparations are bestowed upon the Sami and Kven communities in Norway, I would hope that you would also lead in discouraging Mariah from ever performing in your country.
Much research has been conducted on Sami and Kven communities over the years. However, little has been done on the long-term effects of the government repressive policies on these ethnic groups. The Sami people live with a heritage of repression and abuse, and for many Sami it is about shame, about lack of language and visibility, mental heath and taboos. To a great extent, the same goes for the Kvens, the descendants of 19th century Finnish immigrants.
Mariah: Please only perform in a perfect country with perfect people, because we. will. all. be. triggered. SMH.
