Mariah’s Europe Insta story (85,158) by automatic_prince from Germany
You know the way she has a couple of stories saved in her Insta profile? She has one for the Asian tour and one for Caution and so on. Well I just noticed she had one for the European tour but now it's gone. I hope that's not a bad sign. I really hope she's not planning to cancel the European tour if the album turns out to be a success.

The Distance (85,157) by anonymous from UK
I've waited a while with this one, because at first I didn't have a clue what was going on with this song haha. GTFO, I was just hypnotised from first listen, and I listened to it quite literally about 15 times on repeat without realising. When I say hypnotised, I mean it. Then With You, which I just fell in love with practically straight away. Then we have The Distanace. After a few days, this song has really grown on me, and I can say (yes I'm going to say), I love it. As others have said, it's one of the first songs in a long time with a featured artist that doesn't feel tacked on or "just for the hell of it". One thing about it though, it does give me true high summer vibes, and with it turning rapidly colder in the UK, my dream of being at the beach or in the garden chilling to this song are sadly going to have to wait. Or, you know, I could just hop on a plane bound for Miami haha.

Two fears (85,156) by Critter from USA
Even though I am supposed to be grateful of new music and not care about radio play and whatnot, for some reason, I am afraid of the following two things:
1. M sitting on The Distance, a gem like she did with Migrate.
2. M putting out a turn-off video, like she did with You're Mine.
Keeping my fingers crossed neither would happen.

Re: Realize (85,150) (85,155) by Shezz from Pk
You are absolutely right. She has truly come a long way from her dark years and you can she has been putting in the work. I think most of us were expecting Caution to become her next TEOM but I really don't think that's realistic now.
People talk about Cher getting one of her biggest hits in her 50s with Believe but then that was also in the 90s when the landscape of the music industry was very different, still open and accepting of older artists.
The question is does she really need to follow current music trends and produce more of the regular fast food like fodder? Other than following the current trends I think it is also due to the fact that she has evolved and changed as an artist (for better or for worse). I'm just glad I can still enjoy her for who and what she is now but I'll always want her to do even better.

The Distance (85,154) by Licia from USA
I'm really enjoying this song. I'm enjoying it so much people in my house are giving me the stink eye. I don't care though. I just turn it up louder everytime they look my way. It's been awhile since I have really liked a Mariah song that much to annoy the people around me.

The lower register era (85,153) by Matthew from USA
I'll be the first to say her lower register is not my favorite, but it seems like she's been really experimenting and exploring her lower register this era. All three songs have deep, dark notes. I've not seen her utilize this dark side this much before. It's just a few adlibs in GTFO. Then she is pretty low for much of WY, which I felt needed to take off a little before the end, but it does get stuck in your head. The Distance does something I thought was impossible. It proved she could have a hit singing mostly in that lower register which is not your standard pop star register. But The Distance is a legitimate bop, especially if you like R&B. So yeah, the dark notes era. I'm starting to get into it. If her vocal delivery has changed, her pen game is as sharp as ever. All three songs have ear-worm hooks. Regardless of how I feel about each of the 3 singles, I do find myself humming them. Only YDKWTD, from her last album had that kind of ear-worm hook. So yeah, just wanted to pipe in on my cautious optimism so far. Instead of holding her to some previous standard, I'm going to see how far she experiments with the lower dark notes and I'm interested to see how commercial she can make that sound. Mimi's going dark y'all. Caution.

The Distance / MC's music (85,151) by Randy from USA
So, I didn't pre-order the album and today I decided to listen to The Distance for the first time. I have to say that I didn't like it at all. What it all boils down to is musical preference. I am a big fan of lyrics and songs not about love. I feel like romantic love has been explored enough by pop/r&b. The Distance is boring. With You is boring. I did like GTFO a lot but overall I'm not doing any whining or complaining because I know my tastes aren't the general public's. Who knows what will stick these days which is why all artists are just catapulting singles until something hits. When have you ever seen MC release three songs a month before an album before? And let's not count all the singles she's released that won't make it on an album. That's the new thing. If there was a surefire way to get a number one or a hit everyone would do it. That's why people tryna steer MC career and single choices is funny. She's gonna have to strike a chord or be hit by lightening at the right place and the right time for her to have a massive success. I just hope this album has at least one Right To Dream, Languishing, Looking In, Outside or Close My Eyes on it. Oh and btw I don't even agree with you guys half the time. I like MOAIA more than MIAMTEC and I definitely like Bye Bye more than Migrate. Getting a hit, to me, is more about being universal than dads and trends. Look at Adele.

Realize (85,150) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
I want y'all to take a moment to think back to where we were as fans a year and a half ago, or in fact, any moment since MIAMTEC was released. If we really think about it, Mariah has gradually ticked of many boxes off our demanding collective checklist:

- regain some confidence to at least be less stoic during performances
- ditch the ridiculous ballgowns worn in questionable venues
- fire Stella and her coven of bloodsuckers
- slim down / get in better shape
- not do a second season of Mariah's World (not entirely her choice, but we all know she could have done another one in spite of the opposition if she really wanted)
- stop hopping from one head-scratching commercial venture to another and focus on the music instead
- purge her wardrobe of the almost BDSM-hooker-leather-fetishist look Stella managed to get her to wear for a bleak period
- lip a little more convincingly
- keep the creative process and inception of a new musical project mostly under wraps until it's time to unveil it
- employ better promotional strategies that aren't stuck in the 90s-early 00s
- get a competent management team that shines the spotlight on her rather than sharing / eventually stealing it from her
- clean up her social media feeds
- be more musically adventurous and open to exploring current trends without losing her signature sound in the process
- work with producers other than the usual suspects (this is the one I am probably most impressed with from what we have heard so far off Caution, and from some of the hottest current producers, too)
- enough with the unnecessarily wordy and obnoxious album titles
- stop chasing the charts (although we often contradict ourselves by wanting her to chart)
- be more coherent and tone down the diva antics on interviews and appearances
- come back from humiliating major debacles
- somehow turn things around from what we thought was a public image beyond redemption
- come up with classier, less auto-touchy-feely visuals that don't scream, "I'm so sexy, right? Right? Riigghhtt??"
- dress more appropriately for her age and stature
- do more relatable features and videos that are based more on fan interactions
- be less catty and shady (keyword: less)
- switch up her set lists (even for just a bit)
- make songs that suit her current voice that she can better replicate live
- rely less on showing off her studio-restricted higher range in favor of showcasing her still robust lower range
- be with a guy who isn't threatened by her success and doesn't stunt on social media just to get attention (yes, I think just about everybody has warmed up even just a bit to Tanaka by this time - you happy now, Special K? You feel validated? Haha.)
- produce less painfully photoshopped, actually flattering cover art for her latest material
- rely less on guest features especially for official teasers / releases
- look less uncomfortable on stage and less awkward / posey in any picture taken of her
- come up with some of her best, most memorable melodies in years (although not instantly gratifying, but really, even just about anyone can do the "war" and "yo" parts on With You, but no one can make it sound as arresting as Mariah does)
- have an organized album roll out

Look, most of these happened this year. I guess it really is human nature for us to think she's taken 10 steps back for every incremental improvement she has done every time she effs up, but that mentality really keeps us from seeing all the good stuff. There is a chance she may end up disappointing us with Caution, and we will have another few years to rant about it should that happen, but for now let us just enjoy and appreciate the fabulous middle-aged goddess we have looked up to for so long getting her act together bit by bit. Yes, we will definitely be criticizing her every now and then - we can't change that. But looking back on how bad things were back then, now doesn't seem as underwhelming as some of us may think. Maybe we have just gotten used to so many stratospheric highs as lambs in the past that anything that falls short of that is a failure to us. It's not always about the spectacle or the big moments. Sometimes it's about how far you have climbed from where you have fallen. She's currently in the best state in her career and personal life she has been since TEOM. And for that I'm really, truly happy, proud and grateful.

Re: Distance - my theory (for laughs) (85,146) (85,149) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
You do have a point that has only become more apparent as time goes by. The image and visual aspect of Mariah as a person and performer has completely overshadowed any actual, real aspect of it. Her lipping and doing the bare minimum in her "live" performances these days are due to the fact that she cannot actually perform her hits like she used to just as much as the fact that she refuses to really put in the work required to at least seem like she is trying, all for the sake of looking good.

As for the actual music, though, she probably just decided to follow everyone else's lead. Look at the songs burning up the charts right now, or for the past few years. No one seems to actually care about making the next classic anymore. Music has become about what would make a bigger splash, with all finger's crossed that such splash makes it debut high on the charts and become trendy for a while just so they can say that they have had a top 10 hit, even if in reality it was actually there for just one week. Everything on top 40 is ephemeral, and their so-called success aren't even geared towards longevity. It's disappointing that Mariah has lost sight of making timeless songs, but we can't really blame her when the entire music industry has given up on that as well.

My group of friends who used to crack on me for being a Mariah fan and didn't care for 90's Mariah actually seem to like her new tracks. So I guess whoever doesn't like them it's just not your cup of tea. Move on it's not the end of the world. At the end of the day Mariah will be Mariah, and nobody will tell her what to do.

Re: Distance - my theory (for laughs) (85,139) (85,146) by Andrew from UK
Your opinion (as this actually is an opinion and not a misrepresentation of facts misrepresented as opinion) is valid. But it isn't just the lyrics that are self indulgent, the music is, also. It is MC's choice what to put out, but after four years (with a few crazy creations in between) I am at a desperate loss with this new output. GTFO and With You definitely get stuck in my head, especially the latter. But (to which most women and gay men might testify) a grower isn't nearly half as good as a show-er. I am slowly but surely reconciling myself to the fact that Mariah's music may not be for me anymore (if, indeed, it is for anyone) in that I don't hate it, but it's all a bit, well, "blah". Who cares? These songs are not the songs for a stage as the GTFO and With You performances showed us. They will be dropped from Mariah's arena tours quicker than she drops an f-bomb, these days. So once again, who cares? The Distance is bizarre. Bizarre. Perhaps it was enjoyable on paper or in the composers heads whilst they floated in that there haze but the only S-P-I-R-I-T it has is the copious amounts that Mariah had to have downed to have written it like this. The chant at the beginning must be a roll-on from a previous album track or why is it there? It's super weird. It is akin to "L-U-V Madonna" (sung quite raucously in Soho as "H-I-V Madonna" lol). It's a build up to a banger only for Mariah's usual slow beat cooing to start. Don't tell me the lambs' collective serotonin levels didn't disappear off the chart at that drop in pace. Subsequently the song is pieced together as a mess. The only good bit is the I can't I can't I can't part. That's it. Simply, Mariah is hiding in the music and lyrics. She is too afraid to write classic and big because of her voice, instead opting to disappear among the cleverness of the lyrics, the alternating metre and melodies of the music and the overall confusion of some of the songs. There is nothing remotely memorable here. I have a feeling that Mariah isn't making music for people to buy anymore, or even for her to perform - she is writing any old shit that she can film glamour promos for. As long as people want to [censored] you, you're worthwhile, right?

Re: Distance - my theory (for laughs) (85,132) (85,139) by Shezz from Pk
I couldn't agree more. Universal, non specific lyrics are the best. I guess there's a thin line between self expression and self indulgence. I long for the days of lyrical depth and maturity too and I'm hoping that the album cuts which M probably doesn't think are commercial enough will provide us with that. "Half past" is less American but not completely alien to them either I suppose plus it helped her to complete her rhyme.
Be that all as it may I still am enjoying all three songs still. They're certainly growers.

Although structured as a love story gone wrong in the lyrics as a whole, I also believe "GTFO" is a message to that snake.

Ariana (85,134) by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
There's apparently a rumor going around that a "glitch" caused some tracks to be revealed on Mariah's album and a track called "Far" with a length of 3 minutes 19 seconds features Ariana. The track was listed as the third track. As of now I don't buy this rumor at all since if there was indeed a glitch, other tracks would have been revealed too and as far as the screenshot shows they only show the first 3 tracks, two of which we already know. People seem to really want that collab haha.
