Re: iHeart (83,924) (83,926) by Tevin from USA
I agree. We know the parts she lipped, the parts she song with the backtrack, but she sang pretty good and live for most of the entire performance minus a few notes and climax parts. I thought GTFO was a bit of a mess, but it was her first time performing this live.
But ABMB, was awesome. The crowd was feeling it. She walked a long way by herself lol, and the start talking to the crowd in the black coat reminded me of her Daydream concert. I was so proud of her. So far minus the usual small number of haters, she is getting great words and reviews from everyone.
Now here comes my fan opinion. 10-10 because I can't remember a live performance yet along a short concert set in front of a live crowd where she put together a good solid performance. 8-10 for me personally, Mariah miss and lows sounded good but she has got to work on or retrain herself to be able to belt and not shout.
Now I wish I would have went to Vegas.

The negativity here is just par for the course. She sounded fine and looked like she was having fun. Peace.

She sounded amazing in my opinion. Her voice hasn't sounded this good in years. I'm very happy for her. I haven't posted a link on here before so I hope I did it correctly. Sorry just wanted to add that link was for the proper broadcast video.

Re: iHeart (83,920) (83,923) by Lee from UK
At this point, Mariah is breaking my heart. Why is she still recording songs that she can't sing live and then trying to "sing" them live accompanied by a backing track. It was painfully obvious on It's Like That where the track kicked in. I just wish she would stop shouting her songs. They were not originally recorded in a shouty voice so I don't get what the problem is. If she has a microphone, could she not just sing normally and let the sound engineers increase the volume. Alternatively, could she re-learn how to project without shouting? She didn't do a whole lot of moving (thank the gods) so I don't understand why she was so out of breath. Was her wig too heavy? Sewn on too tight?

How can you judge a performance on a self made video? Lol, that's just weird.

I don't even need to criticize this surely. What an unmitigated horror of a performance. I just feel bad for her. There is no "current voice". There just is no voice. I feel complete and total sadness.

iHeart Music performance (83,919) by Bobby A from United States
Overall MC was good, but what was going on with the backing track to GTFO? The backing track was dragging and kept skipping over certain parts. I really hate the first live performance of GTFO was such a mess. Why did she need a backing track?

Re: Voice question (83,913) (83,917) by Chicago Lamb from USA
Yes she's always had that soft or "whisper register". She started to use it a bit on Daydream in songs like UTS, and OSD. Then when she recorded Butterfly, we got to hear her do it more extensively.

iHeart (83,916) by Tevin from USA
So I'm currently watching the live stream for iHeart, and it's nice they keep mentioning Mariah and how they're looking forward to her signing, but they keep talking about all her diva moments. I'm like great here we go again.

Re: voice question (83,915) by Nikki from usa
She's singing in falsetto. Which is actually impressive. She did a lot of runs, riffs, and scales in that range. Her agility is on point. She quickly shifted from falsetto to chest voice and back again within a few seconds. Her technique is on fire. Mariah is older so some wear and tear on her voice is to be expected, but she can still sing fine and hit her notes. It just depends on whether or not she follows proper maintenance for her voice and in between performances. If she does it will be fine. If she doesn't than it's going to show.

Mimi is ready (83,914) by RibbonB from USA
Mariah's black dress hair and makeup are perfect on her Instagram page. She looks ready for tonight. She and the background singers sound good. I hope all goes well.

Re: Voice question (83,910) (83,913) by Edward from USA
That technique is called Nodule-Voice, in which Mariah vibrates her nodules pushing her polyps upward producing that breathy haunting-GTFO sound. She also uses that technique on Migrate, that's why it should've been a single.

Voice question (83,910) by Liz Archer from Sweden
I noticed that her song on the current song is very "breathy". Does that mean she can't sing with a "normal" darker voice anymore? I am not sure but her voice seems to have changed since the 90ies? Am I wrong?

The UK cassette single of Without You was the first Mariah item I ever purchased. Started a collection of some 500+ items. It still holds pride of place in my collection. Beautiful cover it had as well.

You're right. The single should have been YDKWTD or Make It Look Good, which was one the best things she had written in years. That, like Migrate, should have been a single.

Re: A technical analysis of "Without You” (83,904) (83,905) by MusicfanJ from Germany
I still love "Without you" so much and always will. I remember when I heard it on the radio in 94 for the first time and I was totally blown away by the emotion and the voice. The song was played every evening on the radio. Good times. I do like the original version a lot, but Mariah's version is a highlight from the first note on. When she sings that low tone and starts the first chorus: eargsam.

A technical analysis of "Without You” (83,904) by Bill from the UK
Um... Harry Nilsson neither composed nor was the original artist for Without You. It was originally by Badfinger and it was composed by Pete Ham and Tom Evans (of that group). Mariah's version appeared in 1993, not 1992, but was released as a single worldwide in early 1994. Also, the terms "shouty" and "twiddly bits" aren't exactly a "technical analysis". What is that nonsense about this being a live recording? Is that in reference to the video? Mariah was indeed on her own in the studio when this was recorded, as she is with all her recordings. As for Mariah "making it her own", she actually stuck incredibly close to the Nilsson's arrangement, and her remakes always tend to stick to the original arrangements. What rubbish. Nice to see it getting some love though I suppose.

Re: When With You drops on October 5 (83,884) (83,903) by 123 from USA
These tactics don't work or else she would have had a number 1 again a long time ago. Even if it hits #1 on iTunes that's not enough for a decent Hot 100 placement. GTFO got a remarkable response and sat at #2 for a bit before falling off. For any song to succeed the general public has to pick up on it. The first single will have to be great and she and the label will have to push and promote the hell out of it and not give up on it so easily. Songs take a while to take off these days and sometimes throwing random songs out without any push or promo become pointless. It took Havana a loooong time after its release to climb the charts but it slowly did once people heard it and hit #2 and people are still playing that song like it came out yesterday. The buzz song did its job and I"m excited for the album. Those that did hear it that aren't lambs are newly interested in her, but they will forget about it since there there is no promo as there was never any intention of pushing it unless the public started buying it like crazy.

Re: GTFO lyric help (83,886) (83,902) by 123 from USA
I have been battling with it as well. I think it's wind as I too think she would have winked in the video if that was the lyric for effect. I wouldn't mind a lyric video or at least the lyrics in the album insert this time. She never gave us the lyrics to the Me I Am Mariah album like she promised she would. I'm still upset it never got a chance. A whole album. You're Mine got a decent push from her and the label but she gave up on it too soon and it wasn't the right single for spring, an uptempo would have been better suited. She could have saved that as a 4th potential single in the fall.
