Mariah redefines "bare minimum" yet again (84,651) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
This is exactly the type of lazy-ass nonsense that really disappoints me - the woman clearly has got no shame. Releasing a song that's not radio material - that's fine, we can work with that. I like the song and even love parts of it. But miming pretty much an entire performance of the same song that is probably the easiest lead single for her to sing since 1990 is just straight up insulting. We have also apparently reached a point where Mariah cannot even (or at least refuses to) coo live. Just how dumb does she think her audience, let alone her fans, are? No one deserved this - not all of us, not the song, and definitely not past Mariah who actually performed.

It doesn't take more than 3 listens of the studio version for anyone to realize that that sham of a performance was almost identical to the original save for that intro (which, if we're being generous, is probably the only set notes she sang live), those cut out parts which the background singers do their thing and the finale without the whistles which is just a full voiced version of the fade out in the studio version. What part of "variation" does she not get? I mean literally, like down to the freaking vocal ad-libs / embellishments? Not to diminish everything she has achieved in the past, but come on, who are we fooling? And the worst part is that future performances of this song will most likely be no different.

I understand perfectionism, or that she will never regain her confidence in performing live on TV, but the fact that she's willing to sacrifice her dignity for her to poorly cover up her insecurities is just sad. But then again I guess that isn't such a stretch when she already dupes her fans millions of their hard-earned money for supposedly live vocal showcases.

On with the positives, though - we all know Mariah has superior static leg strength - I mean not many people are capable of not getting a cramp after not moving below the waist at all for around 5 minutes whilst on killer heels - that was actually more impressive than her actual performance. Kudos to her dancers including Bryan who choreographed their number as well as the backup singers for doing all the work to make her look good. She did look stunning and every bit the diva she is; the visuals effect was quite incredible, and since that's really been the ultimate goal for her since 2010, we could say it's been more than achieved this time.

It's just really hard when someone you root for who is currently in the best place she has been in career-wise in a long time wouldn't even try. We all really wanted her to do well. Sorry, just needed to get that off my chest. You know what they say, you know something's up when the nice ones lose it. I hope my next post will be nicer. Now excuse me as I'mma take a much-needed essential oil break to calm down.

Re: AMAs (84,648) (84,650) by Bobby A from United States
I agree with you, but I just don't want believe that she needed to lip With You with my first post about the AMAs. It is such a simple song vocally. So, what are the real reasons she gets so nervous and stiff during her performances? Are her nodules causing breathing issues? Did anybody see how out of breath she was at the end of the performance? Is her range so far gone now? What about the look on Post Malone's face at the end of the performance? I love MC, but she can not continue to lip sync at every performance. I suggest she spend a couple of Sundays at Baptist church singing with all of her might church hymns to congregation to overcome her vocal issues. Nobody cares at a Baptist church if you off key and pitchy. Anyway, I am afraid for this new era because her peers think she has become a manufactured studio singer who can not replicate her songs live anymore. MC15 is shaping up to be DOA. Where is your intervention RocNation? Somebody sit MC down and have a heart to heart talk with her.

Just why? (84,649) by 90sMariah from SG
Why record a song you know you can't sing live? What is the point? She is the one responsible for the melodies and words of her songs, so she controls the pitch and key of her songs. Why does she continue to punish herself by making herself look bad? Mariah, please just stop embarrassing yourself and the people who still care for you. You can no longer sing well. I'm sorry, but your once majestic voice is gone. Time to retire it. You have the gift of creating music, why not write for other people? We'll support you through them.

Re: AMAs (84,646) (84,648) by Lexingz from Estonia
I watched it in high def now and if you count everything in, about 20% of the lead vocal I heard with my ears was live. She was singing over a backing track and doing some relaxed adlibs in the lower register which sounded good. All the belting notes, it seems, were lipped.

AMA performance (84,647) by RibbonB from USA
I thought she sang live, to track ofcourse. I thought she did ok. The color explosion was rather pretty. She seemed a bit nervous and relieved when she made it though. It was at least decent and not a debacle.

Re: AMAs (84,638) (84,646) by Licia from USA
Please tell me she sang at least one note. I had to watch it on YouTube so I couldn't really tell. I was prepared for the possibility that the song might not translate well live so I can't really b*tch about it being boring, but I needed her to actually sing the song at least. On a positive note they prettied her very well. She was gorgeous.

The scheduling conflicts (84,644) by Todd from Melbourne, Australia
So I got a reminder on my phone tonight - "Mariah Carey @ Rod Laver Arena". Tonight, I would have seen the #1s Tour with 40,000 others. I can't be too mad about it though, because at least there's new music, but ditched for the AMA's? Well, I've been dropped for less I guess. I would have been pissed had she been swanning around the Caribbean somewhere on a boat with the dancerman. Her AMA performance, well - she looked good. The choreography gave her a reason to stand still. I didn't mind it. Yes, she lipsynch'd the entire 4 note variation of a song. That was disappointing. But, 99.9% of people have never heard the song, and likely never will again, so who cares?

Bleakriah at the AMA's (84,642) by Kevyn from Germany
I really don't know what to say. Maybe I should keep my mouth shut, because what I have to say, is everything but nice. Her "performance", if you even can call it like that, was exactly what I predicted and wrote here on this messageboard two days ago. Mariah in a cheap looking and way too small dress, just standing stiffly in front of a microphone and pretend to sing her new song. If this is what some Lambs call a "evolved Mariah" then I'm out of it. I neither need the amount of money Mariah has, nor 18 number one songs on the Billboard charts to be able to share my thoughts. That some Lambs dare to say she sung live is absolutley ridiculous.

Re: The ultimate disgrace (84,636) (84,641) by Shezz from Pk
You are completely missing Andrew's point (which often gets lost in his brutal delivery). It was very very disappointing to see our favourite "singer" of all time not even partly attempt to sing With You live. When people like J. Lo and Taylor Swift can make Mimi look bad, it is really sad. I did not hear any parts that didn't sound like the studio version at all and we all know she really can't sing that well now that you'd be fooled to thinking it was the studio version.

I think this sums up Andrew's and a lot of the other disappointed lambs' reaction. Why has she even lost the ability to sing her whispery notes live? She could really well during the Sweet Sweet Fantasy tour.

Great post Deedre. Completely agree with everything. I love to collect cd's, books, movies and so on too. (Lol the three headed-snake, I know this reaction as well.) I need to read the booklet of a cd. The same with the movies. A good movie is worth watching at a cinema. There are people who have 3000 songs downloaded but I bet they never "really" listen to it like if you're turning your stereo on with a cd and take the time to enjoy it. I think that we all agree that the digital things like streaming, downloads etc, didn't give quality to the arts. Everything is available very soon and everywhere. I compare it a bit with food. There's nothing wrong with fast food once in a while but a real cooked meal is another thing. Both makes you full, but the cooked meal you will enjoy and appreciate more.

AMAs (84,638) by Bill from the UK
Well my prediction more or less came true: "She will stand there, statuesque, breasts on display, high heels on, and lip the entire song, fidgeting with her diamond encrusted ear piece the whole time (or giving cues to the sound guys that the pre-record is to kick in, whatever you make of it), and yell out 'eh' a couple of times. She will then be hoisted off the stage back to the dressing room so she can down another bottle of Caymus and overdo the shots of Remy. The circus is back in town."

I actually was too generous in expecting a live yelled out "eh". Didn't even get that. There will, I fear, come a time when MC is actually booed and jeered off the stage for the continuation of her duping her fans and attendees. Only then, as she's carted off by her backing dancers to the backdrop of a jeering auditorium back to the safeness of her wine glass, will she perhaps realise she needs to change her ways and stop this charade. The gift has been squandered. It's gone. Gone with the wind. That much is apparent. I'd advise her to retire from singing and become a full time songwriter, but if her latest attempts are anything to go by, even that wouldn't render much success.

My positive spin on the AMAs experience (84,637) by Lexingz from Estonia
The choreography was well put together, artistic and sweet, touching and sexy (I mean it). I think her team has created a great platform and safety net for Mariah to actually start singing live at awards shows again since her visuals and style are on point now. Mariah looked slim and pretty. Her red carpet dress was classy perfection.

Re: The ultimate disgrace (84,629) (84,636) by RD from South Africa
How about you GTFO? It is fine to be vocal about your opinion but when it comes to you being insolent to that extent, then you are an embarrassment as a fan. It seems you like old school music and cannot accept the fact that Mariah has evolved with the times, so go listen to Susan Boyle or Joni Mitchell or something. You forget that journalists usually read fan sites like this and you are giving non fans the idea that Mariah's fans hate her and this can create negative press before her album release.

You are self projecting as you are actually the embarrassment and not Mariah. You are not even half as talented as Mariah, you don't have 18 number 1 hits or one fraction of her net worth so keep your mouth shut and do not express your views in an uncouth manner. Mariah has grown both personally and musically and it seems that you are stuck in 90s Mariah and cannot move forward. We all love 90s Mariah too but if you cannot accept her current music then don't listen to it and spreading negativity to her true fans.

AMA I like the choreo (84,633) by jaker20 from US
That is actually her best dancer choreography probably ever. I wonder who created it. The problem is that she's not even part of it lol. That choreography combined with her ABMB iHeart performance then that would have been a good show. Even though she was lipping most of it I didn't completely hate it. And she looks great by the way.

Visually stunning. But not effective enough to wow. I feel terrible even saying that. I want Mariah to win, but that... am I wrong? What did y’all think?

"Live" at the AMAs (84,631) by 90sMariah from SG
One thing I can't fault Mariah with is her consistency when it comes to performing "live". She has once again showcased her now famous signature Mariah moves (or lack of it): lip-syncing like she's lazily chewing gum, an ensemble two sizes too small and standing there like a bored statue. I mean, I really wasn't expecting much since the song is super boring, but wow - she made the song even more boring I almost dozed off. Lol. I guess "Yay" at least she looked pretty, right? Right?

The ultimate disgrace (84,629) by Andrew from UK
Thumbs up if you are thoroughly ashamed to be a Mariah Carey fan after that AMA "performance". Everything is sound engineered. Everything is a fake. Everything is a farce. Don't anybody call her a singer. Don't you dare. I have never seen anything so shit in my life. "Don't know what I'm supposed to do?" I have an idea. Quit embarrassing yourself and your fans. What a disgrace. Singer? Singer? More like a [censored] in a dress. Ashamed of my life spent defending this.
J.Lo figuratively just said she don't know you either. J.Lo sings better than you. Sound comes out of her mouth. And mine. Dear 1995 Andrew, one day you will sing better than Mariah Carey.

Re: With You Performance (84,622) (84,628) by Bobby A from United States
AMA performance was awesome and safe. With You just reminds me of an album track just like GTFO. Here's to the second single before the album drops or she should just drop the album out of nowhere. Because at this point we all are just wanting MC15. Only time will tell what happens now.
