Listening session (83,482)
by Ethan from United States

While people on social media are freaking about the recent news of a possible performance on AMA this October, no one seems to care that she just had a listening session with Cha Cha in IG's story. Haha. I wonder if it's a single that she just did or they were listening to the entire finished album. Sooner or later, new music will drop and it will be definitely this year.

Mariah has to go out on top (83,480)
by T from USA
| |
|
|
I'm going to write something that might enrage a lot of fans but I think it might be accurate. Mariah's legacy and reputation rests on her leaving the business at the top of her game. Period. She's had two big career defining albums in the past; Butterfly and TEOM. However after both of those albums she never followed up with something as spectacular. After Butterfly she produced Rainbow, Glitter, etc. None of the albums that followed lived up to the quality that was Butterfly. Likewise with all the followups to the TEOM. Now for a moment, imagine a world where Mariah had never released another album after TEOM. Her star would be shinning so bright because of the idea of "what if". Sometimes I think "what if" in regards to Mariah is bigger than the actual product we get. (Butterfly and TEOM are the exceptions). Now I'll go even a step further, for a moment imagine Mariah's final album was Butterfly. Sure we would have missed out on some amazing songs but we would've also missed out on her psychiatric breakdown and the humiliation of Stella. Had her albums ranged from 1990's self titled to Butterfly her record and reputation would've been sealed as one of the best in the history of music. Maybe I'd settle for a happy medium. It would've been nice to have her take eight years off after Butterfly and then come back in 2005 with TEOM and then walk away. But alas here we are again. And I'm afraid that the only sure way Mariah will get her respect is if she has one more career defining album (like Butterfly or TEOM) and then walks away for good. She could still tour the greatest hits but the "what if" factor of another album would always out weight the actual follow up.

Top 5 fall most anticipated albums (83,479)
by Bobby A from United States
| |
|
|
1. Mariah Carey - MC15 - Fall 2018 2. Culture Club - Life - October 26 3. Carrie Underwood - Cry Pretty - September 26 4. Janet Janet - JJ10 - Fall 2018 5. Zayn - Z2 - Fall 2018 6. Bubbling Under - Liam Payne - Fall 2018 7. Jason Derulo - Fall 2018 Carrie is going to have huge first week numbers. A more personal soulful and emotional Carrie will be revealed on the new album. Culture Club won't be a huge seller or garner any radio airplay, but the album will receive rave reviews. Janet just released her new song with Daddy Yankee. Her new album is going to lack promotion when it is released. She needs Virgin Records again. Zayn's new album may be pushed back for more studio time and for a hit single that is rising on the chart. His last four singles have flopped. I don't know why he is singing all this pop and not doing more R&B and alternative R&B. His voice is suited for both genres. And last our girl, Mimi is going to have huge first week numbers because no anticipation has been higher for a Mariah Carey album since TEOM. The album cover is going to be hot. MC15 will be a defining moment for her career just like Butterfly and TEOM. Are we ready? Because the first single is going drop really soon. I am predicting the album will be here in time for presents under the Christmas tree. Expect to be surprised with MC15.

Some of his impressions of Mariah are fun but the video and song are average at best. This is a YouTube blog type thing, not a music video. If he weren't gay and pretending to be women nobody would care.

That interview Brenda did with Wendy Williams back in 2005 was a corny attempt to Mariah look bad and it did not work. She thought she was going to gain sympathy and gain respect from the English music market again and honestly we don't know what was promised and to whom so we should not just to conclusions. On another note Mariah is still very close with her friend Josefine who she has known before stardom. To be honest we all lose people in our life along the way as we change and life happens so let's stop acting like Mariah is the only person who has cut tides with people in her life because we all have.

"I sometimes think Mariah has been playing 'Mariah Carey' the caricature for so long now she's frightened that if she doesn't she will be forgotten." I can imagine that too. I still think it was just for protection once, but now I would love to see more of Mariah. I'm sure she's interesting enough without playing a "role".

Instagram means almost nothing. Mariah's behavior with the diva image may be hated by most of the people but musically she's respected because of her 90ies legendary albums and singles for all time. There will never be another artist like Mariah. Even if she releases another "Infinity" or "I don't". To compare Mariah with J.Lo is impossible. J.Lo was perfect as the background-dancer for the Janet Jackson. She's beautiful and can dance, but her voice is a joke. If she wasn't pretty and clever in businesses no one would know her. Even if the whole world would "follow" her on the internet, she will never ever be a true artist. Just a performer.

It was an inherently stupid question, given the nature of the board, who it is dedicated to, and the sheer wealth of Mariah’s legacy, even if she has tarnished it in recent years.

Mariah doesn't seem to go back to her roots because she seems rootless. But you don't know that she promised anyone a house. She is still friends with at least one of her old friends and we have no idea how she may or may not have helped her or any other former friends or family.

After having a good chuckle, I sent your inquiry to a colleague who is as close to a pop culture expert as there exists (she also has a TED talk on gossip) and this is what she sent: I always found the comparison to be absurd, and the reasons why they are linked even though their thrones are propped on totally different planets are: 1) one fececiously denied the existence of the other fifteen years ago on camera; 2) they are women; 3) they are women of colour. I would trust that the public would know the difference between Mimi and Jennifer like we know the difference between Kim Kardashian and Ella Fitzgerald, but then again, this is the same public that couldn't differentiate a more consequential pairing like Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. To put it simply: Mimi, for the first third of her career, thrived on her genuine, divinely-annointed talent, and is currently resting on her laurels (as all proper legends end up having to do), while Jennifer has been and continues to be a hustler. If we ran a poll on the streetcar right now, I'm pretty sure it would go something like: "Mariah Carey? I love Always Be My Baby. Jennifer Lopez? I saw her on TV last night and she was smoking hot." You can see where my point is there. And if the public were to "respect" any one of these qualities over another, it would be Jennifer's navigation of the celebrity labyrinth. And you're right, she does it with more finesse as Mimi does with more cheese. Do I think the Mimi persona is a turnoff for the public? No. We've become more open minded than that, especially for those who've already proven their worth in talent even if the bar has been significantly lowered in recent years. After all, it was us, the public, that put a porn star on the cover of Vogue. But more about the Mimi image: if you squint a little harder at her career, in the b-list, misguided efforts craving coolness and street-cred, you can still see the outsider she's been singing about for decades. It's her makeshift attempts at the JLo hustle that compares to Jennifer's industrial complex, which the public can see through. But if you think about it, the stars with the *truest artistic talents* have never found their comfortable place on the celebrity chessboard. They either retreat into hiding (David Bowie, Prince, Aretha Franklin) or completely self destruct (Billie Holiday, Maria Callas, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston). And while it seemed like their litmus public rating plummeted, eventually we always come around.

I disagree with your opinion. While I am a fan of both women, I think it's more than disrespectful to dismiss JLo's career and legacy to being a carbon copy of someone else. Mariah is a different talent and legacy that is unique from what JLo's career and legacy represents. Some examples of this would be what Madonna and Cher are to our wider culture. The main point is that everyone has a peak moment when they are hot and everyone ultimately fades into obscurity at some point. I think that Mariah has been less than smart to publicly dismiss JLo the way she has. While Mariah has created gif worthy moments, she in a wider sense only looks insecure and petty. It diminishes her talent and intellect unfortunately. All she has to do is say her talent is legit and separate from what MC does. Two different things. Both legitimate. Funny enough, I think the two would be really good friends if MC was able to be real again. But MC is far from "Riah" the Brenda K Starr days, the girl from Long Island, NYC whatever. She wouldn't know what's real and in touch if it were next to her. Such a shame because Brenda K Starr is still that real NYC girl from back in the day and Mariah pays her dust. I don't know how she "sings" I Still Believe and not make things right with that woman. Can you imagine the woman responsible for your break at stardom and you pay her no dues? Where's the house you promised her? Mariah never goes back to her roots to pay her respect.

Re: Ariana Grande - Sweetener (83,405) (83,463)
by darrian liu from taiwan

Really late post, but I agree. Sweetener was really uneven, but there are still gems in it. God is a Woman, hands down, is the best top 40 single ever released this year. Loved the vocals, the visuals, the beat, everything. No Tears Left to Cry was a really good pop song with pretty boring lyrics. R.E.M is actually a Beyoncé track called Wake Up for her self-titled album, but was eventually scrapped for the album. Ari heard the song, kept the hook and revamped a lot of the verses. Bey's version is superior, but Ari's version is still a song I really really enjoy. I actually didn't really enjoy Pharrell's contribution in it, aside from Blazed and The Light is Coming, but I feel like they could eventually grow on me. Goodnight n Go and Better Off were good, Get Well Soon is basically Honeymoon Avenue's stripped down sister, and if her team doesn't release Breathin as her next single, I would throw a fit. I found myself enjoying Dangerous Woman more, but I think I get why you compared Sweetener to Daydream. Daydream was the album in which Mariah started to introduce new sounds into her songs. Sweetener is also a "transition" album where Ari experiments with new styles and sounds, although while Mariah smoothly incorporates those sounds in Daydream to create a masterpiece, Sweetener is more rough around the edges, with a more hit-or-miss result, more uneven. It is, however, a sign of artistic growth for Ari, and I couldn't be more proud of her.

Mariah's image (83,462)
by darrian liu from taiwan
| |
|
|
Currently, Mariah's image is taking baby steps towards the better. However, there's still a long way to go. The majority of the GP categorizes her as a legend who used to be great. She still needs to reintroduce herself to the younger crowd and as often as we say that she has nothing left to prove, in reality, she still has a lot to prove. Maybe the phrase "nothing let to prove" was applicable back in 2005, but it's 2018 now. Whether we like it or not, the incidents in 2014 and 2016 still affected her reputation to the younger crowd who did not witness her in her prime. What she needs to do is to prove that yeah, her voice has changed, but it's still a force to be reckoned with. The Butterfly Returns sadly is not a widespread event (which is a shame, because it featured some of her best in recent years). She needs a televised performance, maybe just like what Ariana just did with God is a Woman on GMA. I really want to see her on top again.

Agreed. Mariah wearing the floral dresses at home and in the studio make her look very natural and relaxed and emphasize her natural beauty. However she needs to sack that make-up artist and go back to natural, softer tones. She often looks like a hooker with all that slap on. I am perplexed as to why she thinks she needs it. The ball gowns, the diamonds and the inch thick make up are really old now. I sometimes think Mariah has been playing "Mariah Carey" the caricature for so long now she's frightened that if she doesn't she will be forgotten. Where I think the polar opposite is the reality.

JLo (83,460)
by Andrew from UK
| |
|

Essentially this turned into another Lopez bashing. The question concerned Mariah potentially being as respected as JLo is were she to have behaved in the same ways. JLo is respected and revered whether you like her music or not, whether she sold less than Mariah or not. I personally find her grating but the industry and wider public do not whereas Mariah has made most of the planet go off her with her antics. Dress up "waaa I hate JLo she copied Mariah waaa" with as much erudition as you can muster but it completely misses the point.
