The lyrics in Thirsty are clearly about Nick. He works in LA. Damizza was and I believe is still based in NY.

I agree with you so much. The Velvet Rope is personal dark moody edgy and simply beautiful and it's a lot like Butterfly in that it one ups its predecessor. Mariah started getting introspective on Daydream and Butterfly one ups Daydream. As The Velvet Rope one ups Janet. And then 6 months later Madonna released her best album Ray of Light. I don't know what was going on with me, MC, Janet and Madonna 20 years ago, but albums only about romantic love were just not cutting it anymore. It must've been something in the water.

According you Damizza, "Don't Forget About Us" is about their relationship. He titled his book chapter on MC that. I think "Thirsty" is also about him, though the die hards are convinced it's about Nick, which it so isn't.

That's because it is a bad thing to the $500M brigade. It hits a nerve for them that anyone would suggest that Mariah needs the money to upkeep her lifestyle versus their wishful thinking of her doing these things for kicks, any money made is just a cute token to spruce up her assumed already fat bank account, and that she could go chill on an island and do nothing but spend money like running water and never have to worry. Anyway, I'm like you. I don't mind at all that Mariah does things besides music to make money. However, my gripe is that she wants to go for cheap and demeaning bullcrap. She has the opportunity to actually start a really good business that could make her money, improve her image, actually be a creative outlet and she shuns it for crap like sugar water and dog walking apps.

Thank God I Found You was for Luis Miguel, and he dedicated her "O Tú, o Ninguna" which means "Either You, or no one" and you can read the lyrics here. Luis Miguel is not a songwriter though. Also, he would dedicate it to her everytime she went to his concerts. There's no video but I know he asked her to join him on the stage in Quilmes, Argentina where he kissed her. I've seen LuisMi do this a few other times with newer girlfriends so I'm pretty sure it happened. Thinking of their break up, there has to be a song for him in Charmbracelet and I think "I Only Wanted" is for him. In TGIFY she starts saying: "I felt like dying until you saved my life" and in IOW she goes: "Foolishly I romanticized someone was saving my life for the first time. I only wanted you to be there when I opened up my eyes." If you overthink it, the second part about her opening her eyes could be referencing when she was at the hospital in 2001 and he was in Los Angeles recording his album and didn't make the trip to NY.

"Mariah Carey and Friends" (78,690)
by MC1989 from Spain
| |
|
|
If Mariah and Stella are still going to milk MC's back catalogue, at least bring something interesting to the fans. What about releasing a double album called "Mariah Carey and friends" featuring her best duets and collabos from 1990 until now? With a complete booklet a la "#1To Infinity" and Mariah sharing her memories. Mariah could organise a big party in Las Vegas for its release, with champagne everywhere lol and invite Patti LaBelle, Da Brat, JD, Bieber, Celine Dion, Beyonce and Jay Z, Britney Spears... and the press will cover the event, and it would show the world Mariah is still respected by some. A possible tracklist could include: - I'll Be There, feat. Trey Lorenz - Everything Fades Away, feat. Will Downing - Endless Love, with Luther Vandross - Fantasy remix, feat. O.D.B. - One Sweet Day, with Boyz II Men - Always Be My Baby 'Mr.Dupri Mix', feat Xscape, JD and Da Brat - Always Be My Baby reggae mix feat. Lil' Vicious - Honey Remix, feat. Puff Daddy, Mase and The Lox - The Beautiful Ones, with Dru Hill - Breakdown, feat. Bone Thugsn Harmony - My All/Stay Awhile feat. Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz - When You Believe, with Whitney Houston - Got To Be Real, with Patti LaBelle - I Still Believe/Pure Imagination, feat. Damizza and Krayzie Bone - Chain Of Fools, with Aretha Franklin - Hoplessly Devoted To You, with Olivia Newton John - I Still Believe 'Stevie J. Remix', feat. Mocha and Amil - Sweetheart, with Jermaine Dupri - Whenever You Call, with Brian McNight - Heartbreaker, feat. Jay Z - How Much, with Usher - Against All Odds, with Westlife - Baby Love/ Stop In The Name Of Love, with Diana Ross - Hero, with Luciano Pavarotti - Crybaby, feat. Snoop Dogg - Thank God I Found You/Make It Last, with Joe - Heartbreaker remix, feat. Missy Elliot and Da Brat - Want You, with Eric Benet - If We, feat. Ja Rule (I Don't Know Her version) - Loverboy, feat. Cameo - Boy I Need You, feat. Cam Ron - You Got Me, feat. Jay Z - Got A Thing 4 You, with Da Brat and Elephant Man - I Know What You Want, with Busta Rhymes - My Love, with The Dream - Say Somethin', feat. Pharrell Williams - To The Floor, feat. Nelly - With You I'm Born Again, with John Legend - Cruise Control, with Damian Marley - When Do The Bells Ring For me, with Tony Bennet - Angels Cry, with Ne-Yo - Up Out My Face, feat. Nicki Minaj - Betcha Gon' Know, with R. Kelly - All I Want For Christmas Is You, with Justin Bieber - When Christmas Comes, with John Legend - Oh Come O Ye Faithfull, with Patricia Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You, with Michael Bublé - Beautiful, with Miguel - Delicated, feat. Nas - Christmas Time Is In The Air Again, with Kenny Edmonds "Babyface" - Can't Say No, with Rick Ross - Why You Mad? feat. Justin Bieber - Infamous, with Jussie Smollet - I Don't, feat. YG - Unforgettable, with French Montana Possible Bonus: What More Can I Give, Just Stand Up, If It's Over (co-written with Carole King lol), We're Not Making Love Anymore live with Michael Bolton (snippet), Head Over Heels with Allure, Yours with Justin Timberlake, Stay The Night (produced by Kanye West) lol, Bye Bye feat. Akon and Lil Wayne, Make It Look Good feat. Stevie Wonder's harmonica.

Taylor is the closest thing this generation has to Mariah. She can't sing but she knows how to write catchy infectious songs like Mariah used to. I honestly believe if Mariah wanted to she could write a hit but she just doesn't care anymore. However, I think shell make a comeback before she retires.

They crazy thing is some people act like saying she's doing these things for money is a bad thing. It's not necessarily a bad thing to me anyway. She has a lifestyle she wants to keep and she's got children to take care of. The music business isn't bringing in the money like it used to despite her being so popular during Christmas. Even though I don't enjoy the side gigs, I respect her hustle. With the exception of the acting, creativity plays no part in a lot of these side projects whatsoever. These are just quick and easy ways to earn money. That's it. How creative do you have to be to promote a doggy daycare? Lol.

The Velvet Rope turns 20 (78,684)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines

I'm probably gonna take some crap for this but if there is any album in 1997 that could rival Butterfly, it would be The Velvet Rope. Also Janet's magnum opus, it was just as introspective, and even more painful and experimentally diverse. Like Butterfly, it also aged the best among all of Janet's albums. I just love the fact that two of my favorite 90s albums from my two favorite female artists were released just weeks apart and coincidentally share the same soul-baring theme and effortlessly sensuous vibe. And of course, TVR contains both Together Again and the masterpiece I Get Lonely amongst a collection of other really strong tracks, such as Rope Burn, Go Deep, My Need, the title track and a gender-flipping cover of Tonight's The Night. Sadness has never sounded this good. Happy 20th, TVR.

I second that eye roll. I'll believe that it's not about money when a snowball remains solid in hell. If it were all about creativity then she wouldn't be selling us a product. She'd be giving it away for free. Not that there is any creativity to be seen, anyway. I don't consider slapping a pink label on a vodka bottle or selling pink over sugared water as creative. I also don't see how anyone could think that Mariah is making major money off any of these projects. It's not like, for instance, that pink sugar water turned into the next Gatorade. She comes up with these projects, has an anti-climatic release for them, and then you never hear about them again. The only ventures she could've possibly made a good deal of money off of were Elizabeth Arden and MAC Cosmetics, most of that success is due greatly to those respective companies, and they definitely took the bigger slices of the pie as they own the products. Mariah only licenses out her name. The MAC collaboration was a one time thing and just last year, I read an article where a representative of Elizabeth Arden stated that their celebrity perfume sales were down.

Mariah Carey = Taylor Swift (78,680)
by Randy from USA

So I was listening to random MC today. And it occurred to me that for all the flack Taylor Swift gets about writing about exes, MC is the queen of that. She’s written a full anthology for Tommy. Clown for Em. Infinity for Nick, which by the way that line "everything you own you still owe" is mean. I Don’t for James. So my question is what songs do you all think were written with Derek Jeter or Luis Miguel in mind. And wasn’t she dating that executive Mark Sudek at one point? Is that who Becha Gon Know about?

Just sayin' (78,679)
by Andrew from UK
| |

Just spent the day with paramedics in an ambulance and hospital with and for my brother, to come home and listen to Mariah, namely Petals and Close My Eyes (Orange Clouds). That's why I don't give up on her. That's who she is to me. The vocal and musical comfort to my soul. No matter how I approach it or the piss I may take. I think maybe now Mariah, when she is the true Mariah that I grew to know, is the infamous (infuhmuzz) guardian angel. I wish you all happy times, happy holidays, and, if we have or have not spoken, if we will meet or will never meet, a long and happy life.

You hit the nail right in the head. The people in this board, sometimes, are really unreasonable and expect her to be on her A game all the time, for every situation. That's unreasonable. No one on this board is perfect, yet people still insist on expecting perfection from another human being. Get a life, seriously.
