Re: Simply amazing (78,068) (78,071)

What a beautiful post Billy. You got my point exactly. In the video I linked from the Oslo concert, Mariah is as effervescent, fun, vocally agile, and physically at ease as ever. That's what I meant. I think Mariah is under a lot of pressure, to be succesful, to be there for us, to be there for her children and finally moving on to the love life she deserves. Whether it's with Bryan Tanaka or not. She also has to deal with things we're not aware of. And I believe it's a lot. She's had some off days. Yes. Mariah's instrument is her voice. When you're a dancer and you are bruised, you can't go on stage. When Mariah's voice is not at its best, she's still going on stage. I'm a singer, and some days, the voice is not as good as the day before, or the next. And I'm not talking about being sick, I just mean that the voice is kinda like the weather forecast. Not very predictable. Unless you're very careful, which Mariah is. But it means that she has to save her voice on some shows in order to deliver for the next. I know she does her best with what she's got. We can't deny that. It may be frustrating but I mean, are we on everyday? Clearly not. I feel so lucky to have this woman in my life.

Ledisi (78,070)

Wow, Ledisi slayed her new song "High" last night on Black Girls Rock. I absolutely love the song. The band and arrangement were beyond great. Mariah should seek vocal coaching and a little showmanship coaching from Ledisi, on the low of course. I would definitely love if she and Ledisi would co write a song.

Yes, and that is why so many fans are worried about her. Very telling for her to admit that, while in the midst of her current fiasco of "friends". Their favorite refrain of "she knows what she is doing" should be glaringly wrong, but they won't see it that way. Obviously she is never clear about what she is doing.

In truth, this is the typical complaint that fans of most (if not all) musicians that achieved massive superstardom have. I have seen this happening with artists like Diana Ross, Elton John, Tori Amos, even Prince, and the list goes on. Some artists are less polarizing than others. But there is always something that changes along the way that comes in opposition to the original image/sound that the musician established, leaving fans feeling either puzzled or "betrayed" or unable to follow the evolution. At the same time, some manage to adjust to said evolution. I first fell in love with Mariah's voice during the "Music Box" era, which at this point may be the least "Mariah-esque" era, but I could see that there was something differently fascinating happening post Butterfly that only got me more intrigued. I totally understand why Edouard posted his "Mariah is still the Mariah we fell in love with" comment, because in that Oslo performance I can recognize elements of all the things that have come to define Mariah as we know her both now and in her earlier years. I also posted a while back a performance of "Always Be My Baby" from the same concert saying something similar. I just happen to be able to embrace most (if not all) sides of Mariah at this point, and I can see them as a whole. Sure, if you put the "Hero" video next to the "Heartbreaker (Remix)" video you can detect an obvious discrepancy image-wise. But I don't mind that. You can similarly compare Elton John's raw "piano boy" early 1970s classics to his overproduced and over the top mid-1980s outing and detect a similar gap. Undoubtedly, there are certain aspects of Mariah's image/productions that I prefer over others, but musically I have never felt "betrayed". I have witnessed her go in directions that are downright indefensible (Mariah's World) but I'm always genuinely intrigued by most of the things she does, musically first and foremost, including her still mighty and gorgeous voice. Despite natural limitations/alterations that inevitably occur resulting into aesthetic change, I really don't understand how people can't appreciate the masterful and ever complicated, frankly inimitable, directions she has gone vocally over the last three years, especially in "Vision of Love" in Vegas for instance, at least when she is "on" and in good performing days (which still outnumber the bad ones). As I've said before, it is the medium of "popular music culture" that she still operates within that accentuate whatever flaws people harp on. If she threw that out of the window, yet with all the glitz and glamour still in, I think she would be less polarizing.

But to change yourself or "image/persona" 180 degrees is strange. Of course every one changes a bit. You get smarter because of the experiences and so on. I'm still a huge fan but sometimes I don't recognize Mariah. Never thought I would say that. The persona she shows nowadays is not the Mariah I fell in love too. Not at all. But I do believe that inside herself there's still the Mariah most of us fell in love with. To be a living legend must be the hell sometimes. So I understand if she "hides herself".

New Taylor Swift song (78,066)
by SM from Citizen of the World

Looks like the single despacito will tie with OSD because I'm assuming Taylor Swift will debut at #1. Webmaster any reason why my post about the Boston concert wasn't posted? [Webmaster: Next time, start a sentence with a capital and end it with a dot, and your messages will get posted. Also names are written with a capital, so it's "Mariah" and not "mariah".]

Saw Mariah At TD Gargen Boston 8/22/2017 (78,064)
by Derek Eddy from USA

I have seen hundreds of artists in my life and Mariah Carey was just awful last night. She seemed to be drugged, had no energy and just behaved bizarrely. I was very disappointed and feel sad for her. I remembered when I first saw her on SNL back in 1990. Well she is not even a shell of what she once was. No high notes and just saying crazy things. It was good thing a real professional like Lionel Richie was there. It was great seeing a true entertainer live and fully functional.

"Did any of you guys stop to think the clothes and who she hangs around give her the attention she craves?" Many fans on this message board and beyond "stopped to think" that Mariah's clothing choices along with her many other poor choices as a byproduct of low to no self-esteem, self confidence, and common sense long before this article.

Re: What happened to Mariah's voice? (78,053) (78,060)

Actually that's what I was saying. I never said she sounded like her younger self, except when lip-synching of course. I said she could sound great to some songs, like "I'll be there", different but great, and that she had to accept her voice had changed, something she will never do because she's too insecure. Like she'll never accept her body and face have matured. So we agree in a way, and even if we didn't there was no need to be agressive, it's a free world darling.

In all honesty, really none of us are the same people we were 20 years ago, and will be different in another 20 years from now. Mariah's not the same but as they say, "true love never dies".

Are you serious when you say "Mariah is still the Mariah we fell in love with"? I fell in love with Mariah when she released Without You in 1994. Since then, her appearance, attitude, voice and songs have dramatically changed. So no, Mariah now is nothing like the Mariah I fell in love with in 1994.

I know [what] I said before, but Despacito shouldn't be the song that breaks the OSD record. A regular song ok, but not a summer hit. And it's nothing more. It will only be a one hit wonder. That Despacito is so long at number one shows how boring the charts are today. I would have preferred "Mambo No. 5" back then. Lol.

Mariah will never sound like the studio because of her stage fright? This is a complete nonsense. Mariah sounded exactly like the studio in her twenties and used to really go for it on stage. She doesn't sound like the studio now because she engineers vocals heavily due to her damaged voice and an unwillingness to admit that the range is reduced. Even if she stood in a studio with nobody listening it is extremely doubtful that she could sing something like Heavenly as it was pressed. You really are the most awful propaganda machine.

People with low self esteem don't crave attention. This is another example of Mariah having a bad characteristic and trying to portray herself as the opposite. Mariah is vain and is known for being such around the world. No amount of caterwauling will make people think otherwise.

Self esteem (78,050)
by Tameka walker from United states

I just want to say, that I commend Mariah for saying she has low self esteem. Did any of you guys stop to think the clothes and who she hangs around give her the attention she craves? For the clothes she wants to look sexy and be loved like other pop stars. She loves the attention because she suffers from low self esteem. I do kinda think that is what it stems from. She wants to be hot and sexy at 47. Sometimes she looks good but I love that voice and songwriting more than anything and that is why I am a fan. Now Stella and company I don't know them but what I will say is that Mariah may be looking for love in all the wrong places. I my self suffer from low self esteem and when I see some one like Mariah it shows one can have all the money in the world and still feel safe. I send my prayers to MC.
