We never talk about the songs that are about Tommy. There are many. But, I'm in full support of "My Prayer" and "Working Hard" and any other songs left off the album. Music Box is perfect the way it was delivered. Tommy knew what he was doing.

With Music Box she really showed the world there's another superstar, that will stay and make history. When I read the sentence "bonded us forever", I really feel this. I became a fan because of Daydream, but I knew Mariah because of MTV playing "Hero" and "Without You" every day which I loved. I was very young back then, but I knew that she was so special. Her voice, her beauty. Indescribable. And here we are with MB30.

This is a moment as Mariah would say.

I thought the same yesterday. How the very young Mariah sung "My prayer" is unbelievable. So much soul and depth in her voice. I love when she sings classic or retro songs. That version was on repeat yesterday evening. I can't get enough of her magical voice. She really takes me to another sphere.

The previously unrealised songs are fantastic. It always amazes me that Mariah can write songs like My Prayer in her early 20s. I really think Mariah should keep future new releases as simple as possible. Don't overthink the theme, lyrics, melody, production. Lately, too much time has been spent constructing a song that's current or relevant. Whereas, songs like My Prayer does the opposite, and in a good way. Beautiful song.

Now that we all discovered that Mariah has so many unreleased songs from the vault, I wonder why Sony didn't take the chance to release Mariah's EP featuring all the unreleased songs to make more money off Mariah's catalogue. I'm guessing the best year would be end of 1996 (the only year where Mariah didn't release any album). Considering 1996 was among the peak year of Mariah's career, the EP definitely would sell at least 5-6 million copies in US. The tracklist would be:

2. Can You Hear Me
3. Do You Think Of Me
4. All I Live For
5. Workin' Hard
6. My Prayer
7. Slipping Away
8. One Night

Maybe All I Live For Extended Version was intended for The Rarities, but MC wanted to save it to open up MB30. It just amazes me how she works her magic regarding her phrasing, vocals, lyrics, and sequencing. She is always on point with all four and always amazes us with them. No wonder she and Walter A. worked so well together. I wish they would reconcile at least to produce an album of reimagined or extended mixes of their best work together. My fingers are crossed and praying for it to happen soon.

I was thinking today after looking at the album cover Mariah Carey. What are Tommy's thoughts in 2023 about MC's remarkable career? Does he have any regrets about how he kept such tight reins on MC? Does he have any regrets about marrrying MC? Was he trying too hard to mirror the record label executive relationship that Clive Davis and Whitney Houston had? Whatever he was trying to mirror worked extremely well until the music relationship became a physical relationship. I think the Emotions and Music Box albums were all about that physical relationship. The evidence is substantially real in Emotions, So Blessed, Music Box, Now That I Know, and I've Been Thinking About You. They were all about Tommy.

Workin Hard x My Prayer x All I Live For x Hero 09 (103,407) by Shezz from Pk

I love all these new songs. My favourite keeps changing every day. My Prayer mesmerizes me each time I hear it - yes it sounds a little dated. Or rather nostalgic and I love that it transports me to another time. Workin’ Hard grew on me in a few listens and I love that it got a remix treatment as well in the same release. All I Live For extended version is great but gets slightly less listens from me than the others because its novelty is slightly less in comparison I suppose. And just like the rest, I was ready to hate Hero 2009 but was pleasantly surprised by it.

Most of all what I loved the most about MB30 was how it got everyone here in such a positive, happy, “ I love Mariah” mood again.

Mimi L needs to un retire and chime in now.

I hope the love that Mariah is getting for this influences her future creative endeavors.

Music Box is not Music Box without Without You (103,406) by Andrew from the UK

How can there ever be any suggestion that Without You ought to have been left off Music Box? According to Spotify: Hero has 242 million plays and Without You is not that far behind with 221 million plays. All the other tracks are in the tens of millions or single digit millions. When Mariah says that this album changed her life she's blatantly referring to how it made her an *international* superstar to contend with the likes of Whitney and Madonna - and Without You is the song mainly responsible for that. Whilst not very popular in the US it went to No.1 in the UK and many other important record sales territories which were thirsty for big voice ballads (which explains Celine breaking these markets with Think Twice). Add in the universal appeal of Hero and the Club Remix of Dreamlover and Mariah entered new markets and blew the competition away. My Prayer is great but... c'mon, you cannot be serious. Music Box would not be one of the best-selling albums of all time without Without You.

My Prayer, Workin Hard (Remix), Do You Think Of Me (103,404) by jaker20 from US

These are the new ones I haven't heard of that I like the most. I hope this is a taste of more that is hidden in the vault. Funny I was just listening to C&C's first album and I definitely hear that chemistry there in Workin Hard (Remix), the original not so much though. I prefer the remix. My Prayer and Do You Think Of Me sounds like classics to me.

Dreamlover definitely needs a new remix and it will be just as big as Fantasy. Because the Def Def club version does not hit as hard. The public needs to be re-introduced to Dreamlover gem in a big way, ala Free Guy remix, or maybe bring in the Pnau to re-interpret the song and I definitely see it being a big hit again.

All the songs in Proctor are some of her best live recordings, and I wish they were released at the time, and they would have been as big as the MTV ones.

All in all, I really love the 30th anniversary edition. Which makes me excited about what else she's been hiding lol.

For me, the newer version of Hero is also love. It hits a bit harder for me. It's a proof that it's not all about the vocals, I think she felt it more in the revival version. And then the a cappella of Music Box, chills. Mariah I love you. There will never be a Mariah in the history of music.

Hey fam. I've been busy since I have a new teaching assignment this year. So I finally listened to the new music. I have to say. I am excited you all are excited. But I don't like My Prayer or Workin Hard. Mariah sounds incredible but what would you expect for '93? I just don't like the songs and understand why they were left on the cutting room floor. Hero 2009 had my attention on the first verse and chorus. She sounds absolutely breathtaking. Pun intended. I didn't like the 2nd verse at all. Ima stick with the Never Too Far/Hero Medley as my definitive version. I am not being a negative Nancy, I was summoned by Robert. And to a lesser extent Edward. It's good to see a flurry of activity on the board. Pun intended. P.S. I wonder what a Right to Dream remix would sound like? I have a DJ friend. Hmmmm.

Hey Billy. Amazon and other independent record stores are able to pre-order 3cd and 4LP vinyl for fans for a February 24, 2024 release date which is supposedly a February Record Store Day. Check with your local independent record store. They've been sent ordering information from the wholesalers.

I really got choked up listening to the extended version of "Anytime you need a friend". What can I say about "My Prayer"? A true masterclass. The phrasing, the interpretation, the final belt, wow, just wow. I also can't believe "Working Hard" was left out. Actually, with the three main unreleased songs from those sessions, the two b-sides and details like the full version of AYNAF (or the Walter-less version of "Dreamlover") you really get to see Mariah's true vision for that album and what the intervention of Sony (Tommy) felt like. You really get the artistic sacrifices yet still admire Mariah's to straddle both worlds, meaning her artistry as well as the direction for mass appeal. I have a whole new appreciation for Music Box given that for a long time it's been my least played Mariah album, although it is the first album I fell in love with. Lovely commemoration.

Yes, I agree. "Without You" deserved to be on the final track listing over "My Prayer." The way she sings the line "You always smile but in your eyes your sorrow shows" gets me every time.

My only complaint about "Without You" is that it was massive internationally but only went to #3 in the United States. It really should have been a moment akin to Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You". The way she sings it eclipses the Harry Nilsson version and the Badfinger original.

The same sentiment here. "All I Live For Extended" is just brilliant. I don't know why she cut it off and put that short lived whistle at the end on "The Rarities". "My Prayer" was executed beautifully, vocally and emotionally, but I can understand why "Without You" was chosen, it sounds more current even today. As for "Working Hard", I'm still getting used to it, but I like it. Obviously I had to replace "All I Live For" with the extended version on "The Rarities", what a difference.
