Bye Bryan (103,015) by Jamie from UK
She is still following him on Instagram, but he's not following her. Tommy Mottola follows Mariah but she doesn't follow him. I'm not sure if they have split or not, is there any evidence for this?

I knew something was up when her previous MIAM era bodyguard was back protecting her. It would have to be somebody who has children already and not in the music industry. I am pretty Tanaka was being pressured by his mother to give her some grandchildren.

So it's very obvious that MC and Bryan are no longer together. Who do [you] think would be a good match for our queen?

How anyone could listen to Vanishing on her debut album and think she was emotionally stiff until several albums later is beyond me, but we all have opinions.

I agree with you that some people got a pass while Mariah was being disparaged for formulaic and schmaltzy ballads that came off as emotionally flat. But Mariah was definitely guilty of this especially during the Emotions and Music Box era. Some of that material was very catchy, but very cliché at the same time. Some vocal performances from that time period - especially on recordings - focused on frenetic but impressive vocal gymnastics that appeal to people who prefer Hallmark card sentiments and adult contemporary/romantic comedy kitch.

Daydream is when I really started falling in love with Mariah Carey as a creative singer-songwriter. She started making more intelligent musical "choices" as a vocalist then and begin to sound more like a creative person with something other than skill and novelty to offer. In other words, the artist I thought she foreshadow it on her debut album took centerstage by the time Butterfly came out.

Hope you feel better soon, Robert. Sending you good vibes.

Like I said, Mariah seems to be really focused on spending time with her family, which is wonderful to see. Wishing her the best.

Thank you, Jamie. I have been listening to a K-Love radio station since I moved back to Texas. Lauren Diagle's You Say and Natalie Grant's and Cory Asbury's You Will Be Found have helped me.

MC is looking great like the early months of the E=MC2 era. I am glad that she is focusing on herself and her children. I am trying to get that point in my life and stop worrying about my family disowning me and people not liking me.

We had him on our morning show today, what a great voice and friendly man. A "new" singer who can sing. I know he was first a background singer, but that voice really must be heard alone. I hope there will be an album soon. Mariah should do a song with him.

I just listened [to] Potrait. Could Potrait be MC's follow-up Languishing? They definitely sound similar in melody and theme.

Definitely in my top ten songs by her. As soon as I read your post, I started singing it and my eyes welled up. I'm going through some things. Sometimes I find myself singing it when I'm putting on airs. I wonder would you cry for me if you knew. This is what music is supposed to do. And now I understand why MC wants us to relate rather than tell us who a song is written about. Although I think it's safe to say Side Effects is about Tommy.

Great post, Andrew. I always never think of Languishing as an interlude, but as an intrinsic part of Angels Cry.

Celine is an awesome vocalist. You know I love me some Celine, mate. But when she does her soft cooey emotional soft voice, I cringe. Perhaps it is the Britishness in me but it makes me very uncomfortable. And watching her do it on stage doubles the pain with her faux-emotional staring into the distance.

Whitney never got this nonsense. But listen to her records and find emotion in them. She bellows everything. Her contributions to The Bodyguard sountrack are obnoxious bellowing. Where was the criticism of Whitney bellowing IWALY? She shouts the whole bloody thing. And Run To You. And I Have Nothing. There's no emotion in these songs at all.

Mariah, no cringey over-emoting and no over-shouting.

If this were your last day on Earth, in whatever dreams may come after, who of the people in your life would you think: "Hmmm he never told me that he loved me nor how he felt about me, so he probably didn't love me at all"? Probably nobody, right? Nobody of any consequence to you, possibly, anyway.

I would offer, humbly, that it is of little consequence that you didn't tell him that you loved him nor what he meant to you - but of great consequence simply that you *did* love him and that he *did* mean so much to you. Such powerful emotion is a rarity in life and a gift given to you by special people even if it is unrequited or unspoken.

Death is as big as life is little. I hope you find release, William, and live a long and happy one.

I always thought Mariah had somewhat diminished that power and poignancy of Languishing by calling it an interlude. I recall many others here many years ago feeling the same.

Maybe Mariah means (in one fell swoop with just one word) in a song about damage to your person caused by the emotional abuse you received from a lover long ago is not forever. That is to say: the misery must be seen as an interlude in your life. That it is not what makes your story. That it is only what interrupted it.

"I should've said I love you, why didn't I just tell you?"

Heartbreaking words, I lost someone dear to me and wish I had told them how I felt. This hits me every time.

Oh my gosh, how could I forget Can't Let Go? Shame on me, lol. Still irks me what Sony did to stop that single from hitting #1. At the end of the day, I don't need journalists to validate what we all know: Mariah has written a lot amazing songs.

MC should come clean (102,991) by Edward from USA
Fast Internet, Social Media and Streaming contributed to the disruption of the revenue model music labels used to have. Music labels are not making that much money from artists anymore. Big contracts like in the 90's are a thing of the past.

Mariah being dropped by Epic doesn't surprise me. She hasn't released an album in 5 years and the longer she waits, the less interested people are.

Let's not be sentimental about it, she's a legend, but labels don't care about that, it's just business. If there's a time for Mariah to go independent, that time is now.

As for how Madonna can hold up, well, in only a couple of venues, Madonna makes more money than Mariah would make in one short tour. Madonna has also being bundling up a copy of whatever album she's released at a specific moment with concert tickets.

Unless you're a prolific songwriter like Mariah, artists have always made their money from concerts, since label tentacles couldn't reach that far into that domain, even though things are changing.
