But Mariah was definitely guilty of this especially during the Emotions and Music Box era. Some of that material was very catchy, but very cliché at the same time. Some vocal performances from that time period - especially on recordings - focused on frenetic but impressive vocal gymnastics that appeal to people who prefer Hallmark card sentiments and adult contemporary/romantic comedy kitch. Daydream is when I really started falling in love with Mariah Carey as a creative singer-songwriter. She started making more intelligent musical "choices" as a vocalist then and begin to sound more like a creative person with something other than skill and novelty to offer. Perhaps it is the Britishness in me but it makes me very uncomfortable. And watching her do it on stage doubles the pain with her faux-emotional staring into the distance. Whitney never got this nonsense. But listen to her records and find emotion in them. She bellows everything. Her contributions to The Bodyguard sountrack are obnoxious bellowing. Where was the criticism of Whitney bellowing IWALY? She shouts the whole bloody thing. And Run To You. And I Have Nothing. There's no emotion in these songs at all. Since I've had a little time on my hands, I've been reading Rolling Stone, Slant, LA Times, New York Times and others' reviews of her albums that were written when the albums came out. We didn't have access to the internet back then haha. But they all seem to say the problem with Music Box, Daydream, Butterfly, Rainbow and Glitter are the ballads because she's emotion-less. I don't get what they want. My All, And You Don't Remember, Never Forget You, Against All Odds and Lead The Way are every bit as emotional as Celine's All By Myself or Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You. Music labels are not making that much money from artists anymore. Big contracts like in the 90's are a thing of the past. Mariah being dropped by Epic doesn't surprise me. She hasn't released an album in 5 years and the longer she waits, the less interested people are. Let's not be sentimental about it, she's a legend, but labels don't care about that, it's just business. If there's a time for Mariah to go independent, that time is now. As for how Madonna can hold up, well, in only a couple of venues, Madonna makes more money than Mariah would make in one short tour. Madonna has also being bundling up a copy of whatever album she's released at a specific moment with concert tickets. Unless you're a prolific songwriter like Mariah, artists have always made their money from concerts, since label tentacles couldn't reach that far into that domain, even though things are changing.
