Mariah's a songwriter? (102,946)

Don't panic or hurt yourself. Randy suffers from a disease called sarcasm. He was diagnosed with it a long time ago, but sometimes he doesn't take his meds.

"It's a 'too good to be true' moment." Absolutely. It's too much to handle for most of the people. Her voice, her look, the charisma. People think a songwriter is a "normal looking" person with a guitar. But not a diva. Anyway at least we fans and music insiders know her other talents beside the most beautiful voice ever.

I think the "problem" with Mariah as a songwriter in terms of being reconigzed is that her voice is so powerfull/beautiful and it's just so "in your face" that people can't manage to look more deeply into her. It's like it's impossible for people to understand that behind the talented superhuman vocals there is also a formidable songwriter/producer and the fact that she is super pretty doesn't help either. It's a "too good to be true" moment.

I had no idea. I just thought she stood on stage in a black gown and sang Hero one dimensionally. I was under the impression that MC and Mimi wrote most of her songs. I thought Casio wrote All I Want For Christmas is You. I thought Gloria Estefan wrote Hero. I thought Eminem wrote Clown. I thought those scribbling noises on Faded were mice scurrying across the floor. I thought she was just drawing stick figures in her journal during the Can't Take That Away video. I thought that section of her writing Never Too Far in Glitter was just acting part of the script. My Butterfly can now fly over the Rainbow abandonedly. I agree Kelly, Mariah is not recognized as a songwriter.

Had Mariah written more frequently for other artists, she would've definitely gotten the public recognition she deserves as a songwriter. When the voice started failing about two decades ago, she should've taken advatage of her pen-game to write and produce for others, but that was never the case.

Songwriting (102,942)
by Brad from USA

Ironically, at this point in her career, songwriting may actually provide the best opportunity for her. She won't actually be recognized in popular culture as a great songwriter until she writes more hits for others. Past accomplishments can no longer be mined. It may be a win-win. She gets the recognition she seems to want in that way (and some income) and doesn't have to struggle with the live performances. It may be the new interface of her career and maybe not a bad path to pursue.

All about Mariah posted a beautiful Mariah quote today, "Not everybody realizes that I write my own songs and they definitely don't realize that I produce them."
Mariah is without doubt the most successful female songwriter and producer and top 5 of all time (men and women) included. What Kelly said was so accurate. Mariah isn't talked about in those circles when great songwriters/producers are mentioned, and I'm sorry one award three decades later isn't enough, Mariah deserves 10 other prestigious "icon" songwriting/producers awards.
Mariah has won so many songwriting awards but they weren't televised not that nobody really watches those anyways, like the fact that she has over 33 BMI awards for songwriting.
I mean this imperfect angel is unbelievably successful yet it don't compare to her talents, A gracious musical genius who devoted her life to her music and her fans. She is a real life Barbie, has an overly girly persona, she is so sexy and she knows it, a person of faith. Many people can't handle a women who dares to speak up, knows what she wants and who likes to be in control. History has shows that usually has insecure men bothered. The critics now mostly resort to baseless accusations and try to go after her character when so many from the industry and not just the stars has said she is one of the nicest people in the industry.
The facts and the numbers will remain while the subjective commentary will be buried.

Don't forget about 2016 and 2018. She arguably did some of her best MY All performance since 97 (though partially lipped). But yes I agree 2019 until now has not been good.

This song needs to be retired from her set list for good. Mariah has never sung this song anything like on the record, talk less of singing it better. It is also one of her harder songs to sing because it's built like a tradition ballad and keeps building and has a clear big climax, she is yet to do justice to 25 plus years later. I don't know why she still keeps on singing this particular song in every show, that makes her vocal decline so obvious.

I have been saying this for years. It seems that every year she struggles with it more and more and I don't understand why she keeps trying to sing it at every show. She can barely even do the low, breathy parts without struggling these days. It sounds painful when she tries to do the belting portions of the song. I cringe at the "feel your body, feel your body, feel your body" every time she does it. Let's not even talk about the lipped parts of the song that sounds vastly different from her current live vocals. MC, please retire that song from your live shows. I'm still good with WBT and Hero which aren't that difficult but My All can go.

Listen to the song All I Live For. Little Tommy was a bit insecure too, lol. I'll always have a deep appreciation for MB. It was the first MC album I ever heard, with Hero being the first song to bless my ears. Each album has its place in her musical history/journey.

Hmmm. Ultimately Mariah wrote all those songs, and she speaks fondly of them in interviews. I don't think she dislikes the music, probably more the personal life at the time. But even then, the song "Now That I Know" says all that needs to be said about how Mariah felt about entering into marriage with Tommy. "By your side I can conquer the world." And conquer it she did.

Kelly Clarkson comment (102,932)

I think the folks who pay close attention like the people on this board and the industry people (Songwriter HOF) recognize/know she's a songwriter too, while your average bear probably thinks of her solely as a singer.
Juxtapose that to Kanye or Dr. Dre, who I think most folks think of as both producers and rappers, not solely rappers. Again, I'm talking the casual fans, not folks like us or voters for the Songwriter HOF.

We had a little summer storm here. Now I'm listening to "The Roof". What a song. Perfect song for the heat, the rain and the evening. I'm addicted to it, since it came out in 97. I love everything, the lyrics, the mood, the video (gorgeous, pure video music art). I even love the rap part. RnB at its best.

I just listened to Sprung. It's a shame Mahogany and MC didn't do more songs together. He really captured a retro 70s feel that no other producer has been able to do for MC. He probably pulled out some of MC's best vocals on TEOM. Maybe we get a better quality version of When Feel It one day too. Just my two cents today. Lol.

Bebe Rexha phone throw (102,923)

Hahahahahaha so true and were desperate for a viral moment. Imagine if the person at Mariah's LA Pride concert [hit] Mariah in the face like it did Bebe. So apparently what I've learned from the Gen Z'ers in my life (I'm a Millennial, gotta hit up this new younger bunch for this info). Apparently it's something where the some artists will pick up the phone after it's thrown on stage and take a selfie with it and toss it back to the phone owner. Not in the case of Bebe because the dude told the police he thought it would be funny, but apparently the origin is having the artist play along and snap a selfie. Lame imo.
