Recent falsetto (111,426)

Christina was good when she first started. I like her debut album and it's aged very well. "Come on over" is her best song in my opinion followed by "I turn to you". She definitely had a tendency of over singing and over doing it with riffs and runs but her problem was that she did not have proper singing technique which damaged her voice. She's probably the only singer who I can think of who has strained the most and well that also had a major impact on her voice. I've seen some recent performances of hers and surprisingly sounds much better these days. I'm happy for her and hope she can have another hit record one day.

Christina can sing, she just over sings most of the time, which can be unpleasant. I was just listening to live versions of Reflections and a few other songs from her first two albums, she definitely can sing.

Article: Mariah Carey has seen it all: "it was such a drama" (111,425)

This article made me happy. As fans, we can sometimes be her harshest critics, sometimes to the point where I get a little disillusioned. But then I read this article about how all the people who have actually worked with her view her with such awe and respect and - I don't know - that just makes me so happy for whatever reason. Thanks for posting it.

Wow. I am so glad she kept this song under wraps for the 9/26/25 release date. It sounds really good. And from the looks of the video clip, she and Anderson appear to be more than just colleagues. .

What an illustrious career. This article brings tears to my eyes because everytime my grandmama saw MC on TV in the late 90s to early 2000s she would say this statement to me. "I saw your girl on TV last night." She knew early on how much I loved MC. My grandmother was my biggest cheerleader and supporter. She never turned her back on me.

This is what is going on with Mariah's voice. Firstly, her pitch is as always, technically perfect which enables her to sing in different keys while staying melodious.
Her problem in her latter years has been breath control. She doesn't take in enough oxygen (and wears tight clothes that constrict her chest) these days to sustain notes and sing with power. I think she just needs to do lots of breathwork to improve her oxygen capacity and she'd be back to normal.
Mariah's "loss of breath control" is still leagues above the vast majority of singers though. She's lucky her voice just sounds nice too. Many people can technically sing but their voices don't sounf pleasant. Thinking of for example Christina Aguilera.

Excerpts from GQ (111,418)
by Lambi from USA
| |
|
|
"In another class from those ladies... you couldn't walk a mile in my shoes" over a taut hip-hop beat on the opening track "Mi".
I wonder if she had Nick's out-of-wedlock baby mamas in mind.
"Seemed like I'd never rise again... haunted by desperation and long harrowing nights" on the ballad Nothing is Impossible.
My gosh, she is rather raw and real on this one. I cannot wait to hear. Probably will be my new anthem.

Great observation. I get exactly what you're talking about. To me, she's always gone back and forth, not just with falsetto, but overall. Her tone on Music Box (especially in Without You) was deep, rich, and mature. Then on Daydream, you suddenly hear a brighter, more developed tone, subtly more feminine. By Butterfly, she fully embraced that feminine sound.
Then you get those deep, rich tones again in 2003 (You and I), and by 2005 (Stay the Night), she's hitting those stratospheric, bright belts.
With this upcoming album spanning seven years in the making, it'll be interesting to see which facets of her voice show up. I have a feeling it'll be a mix of MIAM and Caution, and I'm already hearing hints of E=MC².
This is why I think her instrument is such a freak of nature. You just never know what you're going to get.

Very true. Some singers can be technically perfect but lose quality in certain registers. Mariah in her tired, dried, hoarse voice is still somewhat palatable. Her tones are uniquely hers and truly a godsend.

This may have already been discussed here but I haven't seen it in my search. What is up with Mariah's falsetto this era? Like on Sugar Sweet; the few lines before the chorus that begin "Hate it when you have to leave..." sound so unpleasant, especially on the pre-recorded live vocals version she used at Brighton, Sandrigham, VMA and iHeart performances. I have said this before but even on non-falsetto notes, there is something about her vowel sounds on the upper notes that sounds painful. Mariah's voice used to sound full and mature, she used to sing like a woman beyond her years with resonance, now she has gone the opposite way. There is something child-like about how she sings now and it doesn't sound as full as it once did. I'm not describing this at my best but I'm hoping there are vocalists here who understand what I'm trying to say and can hazard a technical explanation of the difference i'm hearing as a non-singer. It sounds like all the vocals are coming from her throat/nose area as opposed to her chest and when she is belting, it sounds the same just louder.

Something tells me that MC really loves Play This Song. I know it is going to be one of my favorites on Friday. One thing we can say about Anderson .Paak is he has really been involved in all aspects of the Here For It All album and singles from songwriting to now video director. She needs someone like him helping her creatively.

I think this is the right move for the third single. Anderson .Paak has a recent track record of hit singles, and even if it doesn't become a big hit, "Play This Song" will still have a chance to rebuild the momentum that got lost with "Sugar Sweet". She has short window between now and October 1 to build momentum before she has to be in Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Australia, and Japan for more "Celebration of Mimi" concerts.
Excited for Friday to hear the album. My copy is on its way from Amazon.

I've noticed that too. Earlier in her career, Mariah's falsetto and upper register had this richness and depth that gave it a mature, almost otherworldly quality. Lately it does sound lighter, thinner, and more nasal, which can make it come across as childlike. It could be a stylistic choice, or just how her instrument has shifted over time. Either way, I think that's why those moments in "Sugar Sweet" and the live versions feel so different compared to the warmth and resonance she used to deliver. I have made my peace with all that, and to be honest, it's somewhat liberating.

I agree 100%, not only should it have been the first single but a solo for sure. As much as I like "Type Dangerous", it was not single worthy plus I hate the video even though Mariah looks good. I feel like "Play this song" is the song and single we all will like and all wanted.

You're too kind and likewise I enjoy your posts. Mariah's beauty is truly underrated and not talked about enough in the industry. I know JLo gets a lot of compliments with what people call the "JLo Glow" and not to put one woman against another but Mariah's beauty far outshines her. She has the thousand watts smile. She keeps looking better with age. She needs a consistent stylist. Get her Law Roach for that edgy looks.

Another Frankie J fan on this messageboard, I love it. He's so talented with an amazing voice and he's taken care of his instrument well because he still sounds so good. "The One" is my favorite album from him. I'm normally a fan of debut albums like with Beyonce's "Dangerously in Love" album. It's one of my favorites not just by Beyonce but of all time. I love r&b so maybe that's why plus there are so many good songs like "Crazy in love", "Baby boy", "Naughty girl", "Me myself and I". I like Beyonce and her music but I feel she has way too many Grammys and not all are deserved. But man Frankie J can sing and I wish he was bigger because he has a way better voice than a lot of people in the industry today. It's good to see him still performing and making music.

America's Got Talent finale is this coming Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. It's one of the highest rated shows in North America and it would've been nice to have one live performance on the results night Thursday September 25th right before the album drops at midnight. Singing "Here For It All" live would've been huge.
