Mariah on Twitter spaces (100,412)
by T from USA
| |
|
|
Last night she confirmed that there is no new surprise album about to be released. She said Lee Daniels is doing a show based on her memoir. I guess there won't be an album until next year but we can expect some good Christmas stuff this year.

Speaking of lawsuits (100,411)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada
| |
|
|
This lawsuit is ridiculous. How can there be a statute of limitations on sexual assault, but this person can swindle money over a song 30 years after the fact, based on a title? There's many songs called Can't Let Go, or when Ariana Grande sang "a little less conversation and a little more touch my body", does Ariana owe Elvis and Mariah money for using their lyrics in an obvious reference to their songs A Little Less Conversation and Touch My Body? Absurd.
Speaking of lawsuits, where are things sitting with Morgan and Stella's lawsuits? Anyone have details or inside info on what's going on there?

Article: How Mariah can face a copyright lawsuit 30 years later (100,410)
by Betty from Canada
| |
|
|
I don't know why Billboard keeps posting about this ridiculous lawsuit, it's at least their 3rd post about it all with misleading headlines that don't mention anything about the lawsuit being about the song title only, you have to read the entire article to find out this important detail and we know most people will just read the headlines and not read the rest. Shame on you Billboard!

Lawsuit (100,409)
by Tameka walker from United states
| |
|
|
The thing about this lawsuit is that this song was made almost 30 years ago. If he wrote it why wait almost 30 years to sue? He sees that it is a classic and he wants credit. Mariah wrote it fair and square. He is after money. If I wrote a song and someone stole it I am not going to wait 30 years to sue. I am a diehard lamb. I wish Mariah the best.

You Are Not Alone by MJ was released on his 1995 History album/compilation, two years after Hero.

I apologize. I didn't hear the Andy one or know that Kelly covered it. As soon as I heard about the lawsuit I googled All I Want For Christmas Is You by Doug Stone and after hearing it I saw similarities and just thought it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibilities that Tommy had Mariah take that song from her label mate and make it a million times better. He's not the most honest record person in the world. That's all I'm saying.

How could Mariah "lift" "You are not alone" when "Hero" is from 93 probably written in 92 and Michael's song is from 1995?

This is absolutly ridiculous, embarrasing really, everyone who reads this story, and I mean absolutly every human being on earth, will understand that this lawsuit is an example of a totally unknown artist trying to get his pension funds filled up and profit from the most recognisable Christmas song ever written. Good luck.

Nostradamus is generally spot on and usually uses words carefully. There's a lot of talk of Cardi, but based on recent Twitter engagements, my eyes are on Saweetie.
I do think Cardio's name would be more beneficial propelling a song commercially. However, she's a bit more "pop" and I picture Mariah working with Saweetie more seamlessly while providing guidance and giving more of an edge musically.
This all said, Cardi only has one full studio album under her belt and she's expected for a big summer release. Could they relate?

Absurd. This is not the same as lifting a sample. The only thing these have in common are a title. I'm sure it will be settled out of court and this guy will undeservingly make some cash.
Also, in terms of "little proof" - Irv Gotti confirmed the takedown. And the obscurity of the Firecracker sample is reason enough.
And, for what it's worth, I do think MC has mistakenly lifted a melody ("You are not alone" by MJ for "Hero", specifically). But this is unequivocal, there is no bias, and I recommend avoiding music law.
I'm .excited for the June release.

I came to know of this song when Kelly Clarkson covered it on Kellyoke a year or so ago. I thought it had thematic similarities ( l don't want any material things for Christmas, I only want you) but then most songs have that now don't they? I don't think Tommy "stole" the idea as it was already a commercially released song. Could Mariah have been inspired by it? Possible. The fact that they named it the exact same title, I hope, means that she wasn't aware of it and it was just a coincidence. The fact that they're only going on title similarities and doing it after so many years when it's become such a lucrative staple just means they're just after some money now.
Hoping for the new single / project announcement supposedly to happen on the upcoming twitter spaces.

Did you even read the article? They are not the same song, they have the same title. There are hundreds of other songs with the exact title He has no valid claim. Titles cannot be copywrited.

Doug Stone or Andy Stone? (100,398)
by T from USA
| |
|
|
I read articles that it was a song from Andy Stone in 1989 but I can't find it anywhere. I do see a Doug Stone titled song called All I Want For Christmas Is You 1992 which does have a ton of the same themes as Mariah's song ends up having. Even the way he sings the last line of the chorus is similar to how Mariah ends up doing it. But Doug Stone isn't even the one suing her. Who is Andy Stone?

Unfortunately, there is a chance that she may have to pay something to this writer. There are enough similarities between the two songs. Sam Smith had to give Tom Petty a writing credit on "Stay with Me" for similarities between that song and "I Won't Back Down". Just for the record, I don't think Mariah should have to give the writer anything because thematically it's very hard to not see similarities between Christmas songs (and, really, popular songs in general). I'm just coming from the perspective of thinking how a judge will interpret the situation.

They've already said it's nothing to do with similarity's until production etc it's mearly the title he's going for. Which really won't stand for anything as there's lots of songs with same titles but completely different sounds. Headlines are there to make the whole situation sound more serious than it actually is. Next minute Mariah will be suing Enrique for using the word Hero on a song. Yeah sounds stupid doesn't it, just like this guy clearly is.

Yeah, most Christmas songs sound the same. There's nearly 200 songs with that title alone, many of which have very similar melodies. I read somewhere that this artist suing ripped off their song from "My Heart Belongs to Only You" by Bobby Vinton.

I heard Doug Stone's 1992 song All I Want For Christmas Is You. And I have to say I could see how a gifted lyricist like Mariah could take it and make it a million times more relatable. The guy released the song on Columbia Nashville records, is it so hard to believe that Tommy having access to it, stole it and gave it to Mariah after convincing her to do a Christmas song in the first place? He is the same man that a few years later did that exact same thing in regards to Loverboy. And we blame JLo with little to no proof. Tommy took the whole concept right down to the Firecracker sample. Mariah may not have even been aware of his dirty dealings back in 1994. I hope she wasn't.

Don't most Christmas songs sound similar to each other? He could have sued back in 1995 instead of waiting for AIWFCIY to become a classic.

I listened to the song's lyrics and actually they do have some similarities. ("All that I want can't be found underneath the Christmas tree", "Santa can't bring me what I need cause all I want for Christmas is you"). Both songs are basically telling the same story so Mariah may have to defend herself on this. The news of this has already made headlines even here in France where it's pretty unusual to see something Mariah related in the news nowadays.
