Mariah's a songwriter? (102,927) by Randy from USA
I had no idea. I just thought she stood on stage in a black gown and sang Hero one dimensionally. I thought because she's a terrible piano player and doesn't play guitar that there was no way she could write songs. I've seen every interview she's ever done and she's never mentioned it. I was under the impression that MC and Mimi wrote most of her songs. I thought Casio wrote All I Want For Christmas is You. I thought Gloria Estefan wrote Hero. I thought Eminem wrote Clown. I thought those scribbling noises on Faded were mice scurrying across the floor. I thought she was just drawing stick figures in her journal during the Can't Take That Away video. I thought that section of her writing Never Too Far in Glitter was just acting part of the script. My Butterfly can now fly over the Rainbow abandonedly. I agree Kelly, Mariah is not recognized as a songwriter.

The Roof (102,926) by MusicfanJ from Germany
We had a little summer storm here. Now I'm listening to "The Roof". What a song. Perfect song for the heat, the rain and the evening. I'm addicted to it, since it came out in 97. I love everything, the lyrics, the mood, the video (gorgeous, pure video music art). I even love the rap part. RnB at its best.

Congratulations (102,925) by Mariahsbaby from usa
Sad when fans seems to also count her out. Congratulations to Mariah, Latto and Dj Khaled for selling over 1.3 million copies in US alone.

Today I will be celebrating by listening to that song, MIAM and Caution, the rest of the catalogue will be ignored just like Mariah ignores most of her amazing catalogue.

[When I feel it] is my absolute favourite unreleased track from Mariah aside from Help Me Make it Through the Night from the Tennessee [soundtrack].

Bebe Rexha phone throw (102,923) by Matty from Vancouver Canada
Hahahahahaha so true and were desperate for a viral moment. Imagine if the person at Mariah's LA Pride concert [hit] Mariah in the face like it did Bebe. So apparently what I've learned from the Gen Z'ers in my life (I'm a Millennial, gotta hit up this new younger bunch for this info). Apparently it's something where the some artists will pick up the phone after it's thrown on stage and take a selfie with it and toss it back to the phone owner. Not in the case of Bebe because the dude told the police he thought it would be funny, but apparently the origin is having the artist play along and snap a selfie. Lame imo.

I just listened to Sprung. It's a shame Mahogany and MC didn't do more songs together. He really captured a retro 70s feel that no other producer has been able to do for MC. He probably pulled out some of MC's best vocals on TEOM. Maybe we get a better quality version of When Feel It one day too. Just my two cents today. Lol.

Really? I never heard of this "trend". It's so stupid to throw a phone. Another reason why I prefer to watch a concert during the 90ies. The audience were normal people who enjoyed the artist to the fullest.

Bebe Rexha phone through (102,919) by Matty from Vancouver Canada
I heard on a podcast reviewing Mariah LA Pride Concert, that someone threw their cell phone on the stage during the Pride concert and in classic Mariah form made a joke and then kicked the phone to the side. Did you all see that Bebe Rexha had someone do the same thing at her concert and now has stitches and a black eye? Can't someone explain with this new stunt is and what the disrupters intentions are? I don't get it? The guy who hit Bebe said when he got arrested "I thought it would be funny." Why? Where is the funny part of throwing a hard object at a performer that you paid to see? I'm lost at this new trend. Any insight?

I see now Bill. MB is your sweet spot. I am going to give it a listen again from beginning to the end during my last 8 days in Atlanta packing. I am moving back to Austin Texas. Atlanta is not the same like it was 16 years ago.

Great post. "And conquer it she did." Oh yeah. She did. And "Anytime you need a friend" is just not only a song, it's a feeling, a hmyn. Just for this song one needs to love MB. "If you just believe in me, I will love you endlessly, take my hand, take me into your heart, I'll be there forever baby, I won't let go, I never let go." Golden days. Memories I won't let go.

Hmmm. Ultimately Mariah wrote all those songs, and she speaks fondly of them in interviews. I don't think she dislikes the music, probably more the personal life at the time. But even then, the song "Now That I Know" says all that needs to be said about how Mariah felt about entering into marriage with Tommy. "By your side I can conquer the world." And conquer it she did.

I disagree. MC always speaks fondly of the Dreamlover and Anytime You Need A Friend videos in post 2000s interviews. She even released an alternative video version of Anytime You Need A Friend a few years back. In addition, she sang and posted an acapella of Everything Fades Away backstage with singer JoJo. The only thing she has dismissed is Hero but says she appreciates it now.

Maybe I can listen to just one song occasionally. That song is NFY. I called Music Box Tommy's control album. He was so disappointed with the heavy R&B influence and low sales of Emotions that Tommy mandated a more pop influence like MC's debut. Music Box's album cover pose is less than flattering too and one heck of a boring album cover. It reminds me of what Tommy was trying to do to suffocate MC by having her pose like young opera singer at a New York concert hall full of middle-aged married couples. MB is just one boring album from start to finish. Thank God two years later, MC gave us the beautiful Daydream.

When Mariah's biopic goes into production, I imagine they will use AI in some capacity much like Whitney's "I Wanna Dance with Somebody". Mariah's voice has been different on each album. Not just tone but stylistically also. It's one of the reasons I collected so many of her singles. I never knew what she was going to do next or how. I was hooked.

Yes, the high notes became quite airy from 1993 onwards. They lost that precision they had in the early days. Her voice has progressively deteriorated with every album since the debut, she's never sounded as magical as on that record.

I agree. I remember that I was a little bit disappointed of her high notes in 93. I love her version of [Emotions] on the [Proctors] performance, but it was not the same as her debut album. Her voice has been changing since 1990.

I can't wait for some computer wiz to recreate all ballads post-Daydream era using MC's young voice (aka whispery voice done right). I often wonder if Butterfly could be re-sung using the voice in Can't Let Go. I'd be in heaven. WDYT?

Robert-Anthony, I couldn't agree more. I respect and love that it moves mountains for some of the lambs, but for me it's the most uninspired and basic of all the Mariah albums. It's such a snooze. Celine, Barbara or Whitney could have sung lyric for lyric the entire MB album. It doesn't have any of that Mariah magic imo.

Where are you Christmas (102,905) by Terna from Nigeria
Fun fact. In the days of the early Internet, there was Napster and then iMesh, Limewire etc. But there was this website known as "Audiogalaxy" that literally used to crawl the internet and find every and any song and you'll just tile them up and it will download the Mp3 files in queue. I found many unreleased material there including what I now think maybe was her version of this song Together with her vocal stems for "One Sweet Day" (we heard this awhile back) and "Endless love". I recorded them on tape and deleted the files. Ugh, Anyone have a time machine? Shortly after the site was taken down asap.

"Music Box" is one of her core albums to me, and the only album to capture the sheer vocal power she possessed back then but for quite a short time. The vocals on it match Whitney Houston in forte, her range seems endless, and her tone most fluid and buttery. This is also the era when she sang songs live better than on the record - case in point "Hero" from Proctor's Theater. One thing I do notice however is that her whistles are weak on this record and not really the focus of her vocals. This was also the first time we got to hear Mariah sing high falsetto on "Dreamlover".

Is she even still with Sony anymore? There were some rumours that she had left. I wish we would get something to celebrate Music Box though.
