Re: Why I want another #1 (100,348) (100,349) by Weston from United States
Sooooo. A true #1 hit song by Mariah (without all of the record label politics) is one that no one sees coming. Not even her diehard fans. No one could have predicted (even Mariah herself) that "Vision of Love" was going to a #1 splash. No one could see "We Belong Together" becoming the monster hit that it became. And even though we all knew that "All I Want for Christmas is You" was her "shoulda been #1" song, no one could have foreseen the mega-success and eventual #1 chart topper it would eventually accomplished. As true Mariah Carey fans, we all know that she is a musical marvel, and if she plays her melodic & lyrical cards just right, that #1 moment will happen again. It can't be forced, though. Her #1 magic will happen when it happens.

Mimi just has to put the Diva personality aside and just be herself. She's so funny and smart, it's ridiculous. The general public doesn't get to see her silly fun side that us hard core fans get to see. She's just gotta put everything aside, focus on music and deliver a good quality album. We need another first single like Dreamlover, Fantasy, Honey, Heartbreaker, Loverboy, It's like That, Touch My Body or Obsesed. A great summer song that blends what we love most about these songs, but somehow original, like only Mimi knows how to. As long as she keeps making music, I'll keep supporting her. By the way, my favorite album is also Butterfly, duh, and my favorite song is Always Be My Baby.

I actually disagree a bit. When I talk to people from the ages of 16-25, who only know Mariah as an Christmas act, and maybe a song or two besides AIWFCIY (and they absolutly love that song), I have learned that Madonna is being considered toxic, Celine is respected, but considered boring, Whitney Houston is loved, but they know nothing about her, Janet is forgotten, Barbra has nobody heard of, and Diana Ross is some old diva they think is dead. When I tell them I love Mariah and listen to her a lot, they just say "cool". She is actually respected here in Norway by the younger generation, but it is mostly based on AIWFIY's success. Besides, Mariah is always classy during Christmas time, and that is what they know.

Remember guys, we are really biased on this board, because we have followed Mariah's footsteps from the beginning, we know everything she has done, not even the casual Mariah fans have the knowledge we have, so our perception of Mariah is coloured by our knowledge. The new generation, here in Norway at least, see Mariah as a fun, classy and joyful Christmas act, with an occasional rnb song here and there. The most popular Mariah songs in Norway, besides her Christmas hit, are Love Takes Time, I'll Be There, When You Believe, Without You and Hero, nothing unclassy about those songs.

I love this list. "Make You Happy" is a top favourite of mine and I would so love to hear Mariah do "Lillie's Blues (Turn You Loose)".

Great post, Nikki. I agree in all respects. The same could be said about Diana Ross, at least post-Motown (just like for Mariah post-Sony). These ladies just didn't want to play ball.

I'd add "We're Not Making Love Anymore" with Michael Bolton. Also, the original Dave Hall remix of Dreamlover has always been available (both at the time of release and on the MC30 EP); it was re-titled the "Bam Jam Soul".

Re: Big Energy (100,313) (100,340) by Nikki from usa
You're not wrong. It's just that's not the only thing important to her when it comes to music. Mariah didn't allow OS to be streamed or accounted for on charts. So, she wasn't doing that for a hit. I think people forget there's not much money in music anymore and Mariah knows she's not going to get much help from her label in terms of promotion. She's been using her music as promo for other money making ventures instead. Fantasy being in the movie Free Guy and in BE has certainly given the track new life. It was a valiant effort, but I don't see it hitting #1. I do think it's possible for one of Mariah's old tracks to hit the top spot, or an old track sung in a new way. 90's is retro right now, so she has a shot.

We could address some elephants in the room. Celine, Madonna, Barbra, and Taylor are white. They also reflect consistency. They stay in their musical lane and to the script of the image they cultivated. Mariah's genre hopped in music and in style. The 2 biggest things is really behind the scenes and promotion. Mariah really doesn't try to control her own narrative or be seen. That's the only reason J.Lo has a career right now. Celine plays ball with the industry. The Grammys always want female artists to cover male rock songs. Dion played ball and won a major category shortly after. Meanwhile, Ariana Grande didn't and she let the cat out of the bag that they wouldn't let her perform unless she did another dude's track. Mariah doesn't play ball. She did have the biggest success of '05, yet wasn't allowed to accept a single award on stage during the live broadcast. That had nothing to do with her clothing apparel. I do see a lot of respect for Mariah these days, just not from these old organizations. I think she'd do well to toot her own horn a little and be present in the public eye. She'd go a lot further. She needs her own platform.

More Rarities (vol. 2) (100,336) by BFF from United States
Songs that should be considered for inclusion if she does another set of unreleased material. For a few, I'm speculating that she cut her own version of songs she gave to (or wrote with) other artists.

1. I Lose Control
2. Help Me Find a Way to Your Heart
3. Someone to Hold
4. Always in Love
5. Dreamlover (Dave Hall Original Mix)
6. Just Be Good to Me
7. Make You Happy
8. Head Over Heels
9. Last Chance
10. After
11. Don't Go Looking for Love
12. Do You Know Where You're Going To?
13. Where Are You Christmas
14. There for Me
15. Turn You Loose (Lillie's Blues)
16. There Goes My Heart
17. Reach for the Sky
18. I Feel It
19. Right to Dream
20. Help Me Make it Through the Night
21. Don't Explain
22. Runway

Re: Why I want another #1 (100,330) (100,334) by Edward from USA
Celine is a great vocalist, Mariah is a musical genius, but there's a huge difference on how they have portrayed themselves throughout their careers. While Celine has always been classy, Mariah hasn't. Ever since Mariah adopted that diva persona that sometimes comes across as arrogant and petulant, she lost respect and fans jumped ship left and right. She has the instrument, she has the hits, she has the longevity and the status, but she never cultivated an image that would give her that respect. Number and hits don't necessarily give you respect, people do. With all her success, one would think mentioning her name would elicit admiration among friends and people in general, but that's not the case. One also have to consider that her shift in music and decline in the quality of her lyrics/music alienated a huge chunk of her core fanbase. When fans of a certain artist get older, they usually look for more quality unless you're a show-woman like Madonna, whom you can't compare to Mariah in terms of the quality of her music or voice, but someone who offers a show worth every penny you pay for. Different from Celine and Barbra, Mariah is very insecure on stage too, and that usually shows. While she could walk like a regular human being on stage decades ago, she could even run a little, can you image, she could run, but now she's stiff and always in her head. Had she kept being classy as in her Daydream era, she would've been the queen of queens, but it's obvious that's not who she wanted to be. And I'm not talking about her looks necessarily, but her attitude. At some point she believed her own hype and it went to her head. She only has herself to blame.

Re: Why I want another #1 (100,331) (100,333) by Tyler from USA
I think Mariah herself is the reason as to why she may not have been respected like her peers. I think the over the top diva persona that was persistent for so many years cheapened her brand. The hardcore fans and music lovers understand how incredibly talented she is but for so long the antics over powered her talent. That said, I think her quirkiness, personality and sense of humor is one the reason she's probably the most relevant of all the 90's singers.

Big Energy Remix (100,332) by Jamie from UK
Big Energy Remix has climbed back up the UK charts this week back to 21. Hoping it breaks into the top 20 next week. It's been quite steady on the chart here, it dropped last week but looks like it's still hanging around. A video would defo boost sales here.

I couldn't agree more. People love to shred a successful person to pieces. They give flowers to people who they "deemed" deserving. Impact wise. I don't know any long lasting song from Taylor Swift. She got her props because of my generation. Once you go swiftie you're cool.

Maybe lambs have special ears because they know how to discern genius. Lol. No shade to others but nobody does create music anymore like how she build her music. Even Somewhat Loved is a genius. Listen to it, be mindful and just don't mind the overproduction by Jimmy J and Terry L.

Re: Why I want another #1 (100,326) (100,330) by Matty from Vancouver Canada
I couldn't agree more. I go back to a question I posed months back: why is Celine revered more then Mariah and sells more concerts tickets, when her early career and Mariah's are mirrored in many ways? (Celine's voice isn't nearly what it was, exactly why people complain about MC. Celine also hasn't she shown us she has a different way to use her evolved voice. Mariah adjusts, changes approach and moves with her vocal changes. Every album and live performance shows us that.) T. Swift is such an unexplained phenom to me. She can't sing, her looks is basic and basic Hollywood, her idea of feminism is her a-list girlfriend group, and she allowed to genre jump without criticism (unlike Mariah who is still asked why she left a Streisand vibe for a Brandy vibe,20 years later). I could and would go on. But I don't care for a discussion on Swift. I'll just never understand how a committee could devalue Mariah's genius by giving a performer like T. Swift all those accolades. Mariah created her own unique genre and others simply do a good version of a genre we're all comfortable and familiar with imo.

A-List never dates an A-List (100,329) by Matty from Vancouver Canada
Hi all. If you could have your A-list Hollywood dream partner for Ms. Mariah Carey from the Hollywood Elites, who would you love to see? (For the record, I love Tanaka and think he's the best partner MC has ever had, this is just a fun convo. Don't get too lit up.) I've always wondered what would have happened if Mariah had married someone on her level after Tommy, like Victoria and David Beckham. Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell.

I wonder if Mariah dated Mark Wahlberg. They would have been so damn hot as a couple! I could also see a Keanu Reeves because he seems like he's got a great sense of humour. Leo would have been fun as well!

Who could you have seen Mimi with?

Well I hope she gets another #1 soon because I don't think she would want the title for the oldest female to score a Billboard #1. Lol just saying "Eternally 12" common Mariah give us a new single please.

Why I want another #1 (100,326) by Randy from USA
As much as I get on MC about her live performances, I still think she's a musical genius that doesn't get her due. I have seen so many artists get musical tributes. I have seen so many artists not get an automatic eye roll when they are brought up at gay brunch. A lot of MCs accomplishments are undervalued because she was married to the boss or because of her Diva Ditz image. I mean Billboard gave JLo an icon award 5 years before MC and yet MC had 6 number ones by the time JLo was dancing background in Janet Jackson videos? How does Taylor Swift have twice as many Grammys as MC? And let's not start about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Whitney's in. Madonna's in. Janet's in. And Ima take a bet that Mary J Blige and Celine Dion get in before MC. To quote MC, "We love everybody." I just want to make it clear for those who have given up on one more massive era, that might be what it takes to push MC into the respected icon legend veteran category. That's why a 20th number one is important. And it's possible. Cher had her last number one at 53.

Yeah but as a young lamb it is "moment" to witness in my lifetime the magic of having her to be so globally revered once again. Even once only, hear her new stuff on radio, people talk about "Have you heard of that new Mariah track, she is on fire." A kid can dream.
