Just another Side Effects (101,391)
by Bobby A from United States
| |
|
|
If MC could create a song like Side Effects, she would make us so very happy. I pulled out my MP3 player that I put all of the songs from Butterfly, TEOM, E=MC2, Memoirs, MIAM, Imperfect, and Bill's favorite Why You Mad remix.

"Then she became more popular then Santa Claus or Jesus Christ." What a dumb thing to say. You better backtrack this statement with immediate effect! God doesn't play with blasphemy.

BFF, I respect what you're saying, I just don't think we can accuse people of ignoring Mariah. She can be the butt of a joke and she can [also] be praised as one of the few living legends that ever were. I wanna push back a bit on this myth some lambs have that the public doesn't like her or enjoy her; she didn't get where she is based on 1990-1995 fans alone.

Mariah has sold more than 200 million worldwide. That number has been stuck for years, while other artists are now starting to claim wild numbers on their own. According to Sony Music Asia Pacific, Mariah has sold 1.6 billion units in Asia. And you know what, I would believe that before I believe Madonna's new claim that she sold 400 million so she can retain her "queen of pop" title which is as hilarious as Mariah's "queen of Christmas". And then other artists are also claiming wild worldwide numbers as well. Worldwide, it's a complete joke.
At least now we can claim that Mariah is, bar none, the best selling album female artist in the US, and that gap is bound to increase every year.

What is the "Mariah coolness" you keep referring to? Mariah was damn cool from 1990-1999. then 2005-2008. Then she became more popular then Santa Claus or Jesus Christ. I don't think she's under underestimated tbh. It was never "cool" to like Madonna in Canada, with millennials. Or a prince, yet they are musical geniuses.

It's not bitterness as much as it is skepticism. Pitchfork didn't even bother to review a Mariah Carey album until 2014 when "Me I Am Mariah" was released. The publication didn't pay much attention to any genre other than indie rock during the 1990s and 2000s and has always had an elitist Brooklyn hipster vibe. So my question is "Why now?" after years of ignoring Mariah and other artists deemed "not cool enough".

I agree with you. It seems like clout-chasing to me. It's pointless to talk about an artist's greatness after years of denying or downplaying it.

Fantasy is my [favourite] MC song of all time. It deserves all the flowers. My family knows to play it at my funeral lol (seriously). [People] complain when Mariah doesn't gets her flowers, [people] complain when she does get her flowers. Also, Puja Patel (the author of the Mariah selection) is 33 years old. Most Mariah fans are Millennials (born between 1981 and 1996). Also, Pitchfork has been in publication since 1996, it's not a new publication. So not sure where the bitterness is coming from. Of all 250 songs sifted through, of which competition is very stiff, Mariah came out on top. "It's time to have a [party], open [off] the Bacardi."

I love the mash up too Stacy. It's brilliant. I also like how she incorporated Big Energy. Her set list is more youthful and upbeat. I like the new WBT version. I'm also not caring about pre records and shaky vocals. I will say I like the new ones in her current voice. I will say that her current live midrange sounded very Rainbowish in her tone. She sounds better live than in some of her recent recordings where she sounds like a chipmunk on the high parts. Bring on the projects.

Honey and HB are on the same rein even as lead singles from their parent albums. Very Mariah formula.
Its Like That to Migrate Cruise Control to Shake it Off Petals to Outside
That is why Caution is highly rated as it sounded something she hasn't done before excluding Portrait ala Petals. Mariah is in newer form. FILAC, The Roof 2022 have creative depth.

The Pitchfork lists (101,381)

I'm glad to see Mariah getting some love, but, to me, it feels a little forced at this point. I mean, how many years did most of us on here spend loving Mariah when it wasn't cool? How many of us went out on 9/11 to buy the "Glitter" album because we knew there would be some gems on there? And do we really need Johnny come lately hipsters to tell us how great of an album "Butterfly" is?
And as much as I love "Fantasy" with ODB and "Always Be My Baby", Mariah has far better songs in her catalogue. I honestly think the ODB collaboration is a bit overrated and that songs like "Breakdown", "Crybaby", and the "My All" So So Def Remix are better examples of Mariah's genius integration of hip-hop into her style.

You know what's funny? My birthday is December 19 so when this time of year comes it's like the dreaded anticipatory wait. But I'm with MC. The day after Halloween, open the floodgates. Before then, I don't take nothing out of the closet, buy anything or listen to any Christmas music.

I am the same way Stacey. I love browsing through new Christmas items especially at Walgreens before they are gone. By the way, Backstreet Boys "A Very Backstreet Christmas" comes out on 10/14.

That was genius. I reconciled myself with all the "live vocal trickery" a long time ago. To sing a verse of one song to the music of another song is so cool.

Haha, I'm glad someone got the "not yet" comment. I don't understand why some get so hot and bothered by others playing Christmas music or seeing Christmas decor pop up in the stores in September and October. It doesn't bother me at all. Frankly I like browsing the Christmas decor before it gets all picked over. I love Fall and Halloween and enjoy it to the fullest.

Not yet, lol. Mariah will officially kick of the Christmas season on 11/01. I say play whatever music you want in the privacy of your home. I was singing Christmas carols yesterday and my spouse reminded me that it's too early. Bah, humbug. We love everyone.

I also love me some Toni. I haven't listen to any of her albums from start to finish, but her first two albums, "Toni Braxton" and "Secrets". I just got "The Heat" album, I'll listen to it closely.

Are you kidding me? The Heat is one of my all time favorite albums. I know I've said this here before but that's an album I can listen to now and still sounds just as fresh as it did then and there are no skips. Fairytale being the best song on there. I love me some Toni Braxton, love her voice, her tone, her everything. I still want an MC collaboration with her. Long as I Live was soooo good, I get emotional with this one. Sex and Cigarettes was good too.

I never thought a day would come when I would "betray" the original version of The Roof. I find myself now enjoying the latest retake with Brandy more and more. MC knew exactly what she was doing, there is maturity, rawness, delicacy to it. Wow.

I am already looking forward to listening to my Christmas vinyl this year. I have some rare R&B Christmas vinyl. Maybe I will start listening to them in two weeks. I am definitely going to listen to my 98 Degrees, Megan Trainor, and Teddy Swims this year.
