Mariah and Celine (99,578) by Randy from USA
I'm sick of this. The difference between Mariah and Celine is Celine's ability to sound the same as her records live. Oh Celine lip syncs but it ain't even close to MCs master magic. Yes MC wrote her own songs. But Celine was able to sing hers. Oh I forgot. Mariah needs 8 hours of sleep. The mics turned up. The mics turned down. A heated venue. An air conditioned venue. No casket in front of her. The songs in a lower key because they sounded better higher when recording. No presence of an iconic diva requiring movement to the background. A sound crew that hasn't worked for Dick Clark for 30 years. Ear monitors that don't malfunction. Did I catch all the excuses?

Did Celine Dion write or produce anything in Falling Into You? Show Mariah's pen game some respect. I agree that she hasn't written anything of real substance in some time, but don't dismiss everything she did in the first 15 years of her career to just to make a point that compares her level of talent to Celine's. Celine has had a great career and is very talented, but Mariah has had every right to be arrogant about her songwriting. It did set her apart, it does set her apart and those songs have stood the test of time. It takes a supreme level of talent to sing, write and produce at the level Mariah did, even if she hasn't done that in 10 years or so. It's worth remembering that Mariah wrote and produced more number ones on her debut album than Celine or Whitney did combined for the whole of their careers. And to be clear, I really like them all. They are all very talented, but Mariah's artistry is unique and gives her a different edge when comparing them. We as fans, myself included, can sometimes take for granted the levels Mariah showed. Just because we don't see it much anymore, doesn't mean we shouldn't respect that she had that in her locker. Every year she has a song she wrote in 1994 go to number one. She is timeless.

Mariah created great songs that could've been hits on Caution. It takes more than a great song for her. It takes a massive investment in promotion and nobody is willing to invest anymore. If she featured Drake or Rihanna then maybe the case could be made for a major push.

Re: Underated? (99,572) (99,575) by T from USA
Mariah would never include Celine for fear of being out shined on her own album. It's a sad fact but also we're dealing with someone who is very insecure to start.

I have a theory (99,574) by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
Listen guys, I think the reason why Mariah's voice has declined the last couple of decades or three, is because she started out completly insecure of herself, but through the years, she has somewhat recuped herself.

I have had the similar journey, also bipolar, also the first breakout around my 30th birthday.

After how she spoke about her in her memoir over ArethaGate, I doubt it

That's a great point. Mariah was covered in the press as the new Whitney (much like Ariana was being touted as the New Mariah when she started), where as Celine being white and French Canadian was never compared to Whitney in that way. It's funny though because Whitney and Celine's voices have much more similar qualities then Mariah's. Celine has always been vocal about wanting to collaborate with Mariah. I wonder if Mariah ever does a duets album if she'd include her?

Re: Underated? (99,570) (99,571) by Bill from the UK
Yes, in spite of how people may feel about Celine and her music, nobody can really say she's a bad singer. You may not like her delivery or style, but she is a very talented and intelligent vocalist.

I find her music a bit "samey", but I did have the Falling Into You album and agree it is a great album, especially the title track.

Re: Underated? (99,568) (99,570) by JC from USA
The OP brings up valid points in the fact their careers are shaped similarly. The key difference for me is that Celine was always riding the adult contemporary wave, while Mariah embraced her more urban sound in 1997, much to the disappointment of many.

I do think Renee and Tommy both saw artists like Whitney and polished their own versions in a supreme female vocalist. Celine is culturally different, being French Canadian, and has done a beautiful job crossing over. Mariah came out as a "Whitney" type but as the last responder failed to mention, they quickly changed course by Music Box. Mariah Carey and Emotions have deeper, more gospel tones whereas she begins using more of a chest/head mix with her voice during Music Box and all subsequent years. They realized they needed a distinction.

Celine has a beautiful voice for someone to say they "hate" her voice or songs is incredibly biased. I do think Mariah's probably always had a bit of an ego for writing her own music but nothing she's written in the past 10 years compares to Falling Into You in terms of composition. Her writing has gotten very messy in terms of word choice and structure. Falling Into You was Celine's Daydream.

I love them both. Not one is better than the other, just different.

Article: The story behind Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" (99,569) by Lainsky from Philippines
Reading this archive story made me think. If Mariah and Jermaine can do two amazing songs in just two days and another two more amazing songs in just another two days, can't they do it again? At least for her upcoming album, if there's any. Perhaps, they just need someone to push them like Reid or some sort of inspiration to make another sure-fire number one hit.

Re: Underated? (99,566) (99,568) by RibbonB from USA
They are very different, they look and sound very different. Celine was groomed as a very young girl and then married Rene. And I'm not sure if in a good way, but they lasted. I found that very weird. Mariah seems to respect and even envy the freedom and "vitality" of the careers of Janet and Mary J. Blige. And that's based on her comments during the Janet doc. And on her previous statements of MJB. I'm sure she likes Celine, but she doesn't seem to model her career on Celine's. Motorola may have tried to model Rene and he made it clear he thought he had snagged a Whitney "type" in Mariah. Full disclosure, I hate Celine's voice and songs, but I love Mariah's.

Re: MC hard at work (99,563) (99,567) by Bobby A from United States
That's the way I feel too, Edward. I want new music. I hope that is why she moved to Atlanta to work with other producers and songwriters besides JD and Bryan-Michael Cox. This could be her summer since Rihanna is probably going to drop R9 in the fall. Beyonce will probably wait until the fall too. I am sure MC can compete with Normani, Ella Mai, and K. Michelle this summer. Lol. Just put the anniversary and other projects in her store for the fall.

Just based on how she recorded MIAM and had it completed by May in 2013. And that's just the way we do it down here in the A. Lol. She could have stayed in L.A. or New York if she wasn't going to work hard to get MC16 completed.

I know we're not not supposed to discuss other female singers on this platform, but I have to ask what people think about Celine Dion on this forum. She had a full and successful Canadian Québécois career as a child from 1981-1987. But she was also signed by Sony and released her first English-focused album in 1990. Mariah and Celine had the exact same look, and their first English album art are almost identical (Unison and Mariah Carey album art are the exact same, in the same year). Not to mention they both married their managers (Celine's seems to be a fairytale, not a nightmare like Mariah's experience). I wonder why they often are considered so different. Celine even had "rap songs" ah la Prisoner. My question is: did Mariah experience more pressure the Celine? What happened? I would love your thoughts.

Janet Jackson documentary (99,565) by RibbonB from USA
It was so good. Very entertaining, informative, revealing without much harm, I'd say. Good to see all of her accolates. I especially liked the old family footage. Also god to see her sister Rebbie speaking about her baby sister. She is obviously close to Rebbie, Tito and Randy. I noticed the others didn't patriciate, but I didn't miss them, lol. Janet definitely has a type that she married and then there was Jermaine. At least he's not a bad guy, but his own comments made him look dumb.

Not dealing with the stress and pressure of being on the road is doing good to Mariah on a personal level, hopefully her voice has benefited from that too. To be honest, I'm not excited about any remakes from the Butterfly album, but I'm definitely excited about new music.

Re: Your relationship with the Number Ones, today (99,524) (99,562) by Mirage_Nunez from America
1) Vision of Love - I always have to watch the video for the full experience of reliving the splendor. The visual is a must, even though I live for the MSG live version even more.

2) Love Takes Time - Still my absolute favorite number 1 and in my top 5 of all time. A classic that I love revisiting.

3) Someday - New Jack Swing version thumps till this day. It's on the playlist.

4) I Don't Wanna Cry - MSG version only, the album version is too generic for me.

5) Emotions - I enjoy it in passing, but never listen to the original, just the Unplugged intro is my favorite thing.

6) I'll Be There - Enjoy in passing never really listen to it intentionally.

7) Dreamlover - Still love this song as much as when I first heard, when I do hear it that is. I revisit it only sometimes though.

8) Hero - Something about the way she sings "so when you feel like hope is gone" makes me revisit it sometimes even though it could've easily ended up on the overplayed list.

9) Fantasy - The club remix version is superior to all. When it pops up on the playlist, I do all the adlibs, then the background vocals (Melonie and the Price sisters style). The transition to the reprise towards the end is still magically nostalgic.

10) One Sweet Day - I only listen to it when YouTubers react to it for the first time. Beautiful message of course, but not on my playlist.

11) Always Be My Baby - I actually really enjoy this song more and more as the years pass. So I have revisited it recently. I use to prefer the Xscape and Dabrat version the most.

12) Honey - Prefer the dance remix version "It's like honaaayeee. it's like honayyye."

13) My All - Love both the original and the Stay Awhile versions. They are revisited periodically.

14) Heartbreaker - The remix with Missy and Brat and the "If You Should Ever Be Lonely" version.

15) Thank God I Found You - Nas and Joe version here and there.

16) We Belong Together - Still enjoy in passing not on my playlist.

17) Don't Forget About Us - Used to be one of my favorite number ones, but not so much now. I have actually listened to it recently, while revisiting TEOM earlier this month.

18) Touch My Body - Fun in passing, but not on a playlist. I don't ever skip it when l revisit E=MC2 though; I have to always let it play.

19) All I Want For Christmas (Is You) - I only jam to the So So Def version personally.

This woman has so many hits. I felt like I was reflecting over my entire life.

MC arrived in Atlanta yesterday. She posted a video on Twitter. She will be working hard for the next five months. We ain't got long now before new music comes out. And MC sounded so good on the video.

Re: Janet documentary (99,559) (99,560) by Randy from USA
I completely disagree. One of the things I find is when you Stan an artist, there is no tell all. MCs tell all book would've been a tell all book had I not watched every single promotional interview before the book came out. Those interviews plus what I already knew led to the book being a snooze. Let me tell you when a tell all is a tell all. When the artist is no longer here with us and has no control over the narrative. Whitney the documentary that came to theaters was a tell all. And I measure a lot of tea that's spilled against that standard. I love y'all.

Janet documentary (99,559) by Bobby A from United States
The Janet Jackson documentary is really good and revealing. Janet's story is told from a place of vulnerability and rebirth. I hope that MC can get to a place in her life and just let her story be told - the good and bad. Just to hear MC tell her story her way would be such an introspective rebirth.

Re: Your relationship with the Number Ones, today (99,524) (99,558) by Lainsky from Philippines
It is better late than never responding to this discussion. Thanks to Randy for the initiative. But let me rank it according to the play frequency since I love a list. The first five are almost every week, while the next five are twice a month. It depends on the mood. The rest are once in a while to seldom played.

Honey - Album and remix version
We Belong Together
Fantasy - Album and remix version
Emotions
Love Takes Time - I love to play it on a Sunday
I Don't Wanna Cry - Same as LTT
Always Be My Baby - Saturday jam along with the top 3, including the remix
Heartbreaker
Dreamlover
Touch My Body

One Sweet Day, Someday, I'll Be There, Hero, Don't Forget About Us, My All, Thank God I Found You, Vision of Love - These are ranked from once a month to rarely played.

Some side note, I often play her non-number one singles, such as Breakdown, Butterfly, The Roof, Sweetheart, I Still Believe, AYNAF, Lead The Way (and most Glitter singles), Shake It Off, For The Record, Caution, SLLY, and Out Here On My Own.

Ricardo - I totally believe this and hope for this too. She just needs the right team and release strategy. Copy Adele's method 100% for all I care, as long as it is done right. Because we all know, she could make the best music, but if it isn't marketed properly, the general public will not respond.

As long as Mariah lives, who knows what will happen? She's still so respected amongst us and her peers. She's still solidly in the spotlight, with or without a current hit record so. I myself believe she will have another number one record. And not a Christmas tune either.

Re:Your relationship today with number ones (99,554) by Matty from Vancouver Canada
Great topic. I included the UK edition #1s as well because I wish they got promo in Canada, I sometimes don't understand labels territory choices, anyway:

Vision of Love - Sounds epic and brand new every time I hear it.
Love Takes Time - I sing this to myself and in my head all the time, but never play they actual recording.
Someday - Love. This defines the Mom Jean Generation and love the electric guitar. I feel there's gotta be more behind Mariah's dislike of the song, because it's gold.
I Don't Wanna Cry - A bath tub sob song that's perfect when I need it.
Emotions - Iconic, but also over played as the obvious go-to Mariah song that's not AIWFCIY.
I'll Be There - Anytime anyone questions Mariah, I hit play.
Dreamlover - The remix? Always. The standard version, I only watch the video to see Mariah's plaid look because I still dress like that every day, to this day, a classic look. Plaid and jeans, classic and timeless.
Hero - Skip.
Without You - UK Addition - Her best cover aside from Bringing on the Heartbreak.
Fantasy - My theme song. My favourite song of all time. The song that will be played at my funeral and all my friends and family know. Fantasy forever and ever. My grandkids will know Fantasy by heart.
One Sweet Day - Beautiful, yet I never play it. Too sad and needs a mood.
Always Be My Baby - A turn up whenever it comes on and everyone, Lamb or not, joins in and knows every word. Amazing karaoke.
Honey - Must be driving on a beautiful sunny day with my convertible's top down.
My All - Gorgeous and must listen all the way through with the drama and the theatrics.
Heartbreaker - Number one party starter and most played MC song at the gay club to this day. Epic and infectious.
Thank God I Found You - Corny and forgettable. It's hard not to sing along, but it's a shame this is one of her number ones when Loverboy, Shake it off, #Beautiful never made it there.
Against All Odds - UK Addition - Love this song, and wish the Westlife version was the album version. Guess it was a battle of Westlife and 98 Degrees to make the official album.
We Belong Together - All versions are epic and rip my heart open.
Don't Forget About Us - Such a brilliant song, and play it often. "Kills bees."
Touch My Body - Most epic soft chill summer jam, sitting on the beach in the sun, sipping a fruity drink with a sun burn and sand on my skin. Love the Caribbean seas vibe.
All I Want for Christmas Is You - Any month any time.
