I like the different elements of the song. I wish the words were more discernable. There is something about the way she was singing that makes her diction constrained or something. It is somewhat nice though.

That describes most of Jam and Lewis' output. I love it, and Mariah's voice sounds amazing. Remember this isn't Mariah featuring Jam and Lewis.

Yey! New music from our queen Mariah Carey! It has an infectious vibe in it and sounds radio friendly. I hope it will reach the Billboard Hot 100 top 10 if not #1. Well, you can only hope for these days. It seems radio DJs are counting her out. Not sounding fresh though for it sounds her previous songs but much better than 2010s releases.

Now I've heard the full song, I'm conflicted hah. I love the chorus/hook. The beat is great, it sounds funky and the harmonies are super as usual. The rest of the song seems somewhat disjointed and lacks any real structure or coherency. It's quite jarring that it seems to be a mish mash of snippets all pieces together with the repeated hook acting as the bridge between them. It's not that it's bad or anything, but Mariah's never done that approach and it's taking some getting used to. Not having the intro/verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/chorus approach is different to say the least. But, I've been asking for Mariah to step away from her usual formula and step it up and bit, and she has. It's definitely growing on me with each listen.

Somewhat Loved (98,135)

I can already tell it's gonna take me a while to fully get this song as with some of her songs. The harp intro is reminiscent of Sting's "Shape of my heart" song from a while back, but the first listen was underwhelming as the song lacks a definitive melody line, isn't really memorable save for the chorus, nor cohesive (peep the jarring way the first chorus jumps into the mix) almost like two songs merged together jarringly (maybe on purpose). On a positive note it does have that Mariah Carey sound/magic, the production is top notch as expected - it is Jam and Lewis after all they never disappoint and it gets better towards the end. All in all it's pretty decent but isn't gonna do anything on the charts, I don't think that was the intent either. Just a bop with a slick sick beat.

I love it. I had to read lyrics to understand the story that MC is telling. The two lovers meet in an corridor and it was love at first sight. The angel cheated and the woman's world has spun out of control. The bridge symbolizes the many emotions one has when an angel breaks your heart. MC is the William Shakespeare of our time. This is the perfect song for when someone has broken your heart. New phrase that is going to catch on with other people this year with a broken heart is "You go". I need the remix where she rewrites the lyrics and sings on top of an 80's sample from a Jam and Lewis song.

As I kept having the breaking my heart line running through my head, I couldn't help but feel a bit of Crybaby pop up. Jam and Lewis worked on that song. Both have a similar vibe.

Major bop. My only complaint would be that the verses and the chorus sound like two different songs, but I still live for the chorus and the bridge. It will be on repeat until MC16.

Yeah I couldn't wait either, lol. Thanks for the link. Definitely has potential. I kept thinking this is the type of song that sounds great on the radio. No big vocal moment but TOEM proved you don't need one. She sang then and now in her middle range and it works well. With the right arrangement dare I say she could even sing this live. Plus, I'm glad she ditched the guest rapper. Just MC and a sick beat equals a great song. Maybe a remix will see one? Who knows. I do hope it gets the promotion it deserves.

I heard the full song and I like it. The vocal approach is reminiscent of E=MC2. Sung straight forward and in her mid range. I really like the lyrics. The intro is beautiful and I love the verses. The bridge is a little busy. No big vocal moment at the end sans a few whistles. It's probably her most poppy sounding r&b song since Beautiful. It has potential. Not sure if Jimmy Jam and Terry’s label are going to put any money behind it for radio but it’s nice to have a new song. I really relate to the lyrics currently so I’ll be living with this song this summer.

Re: Caution deserved better (98,123) (98,127)

The problem with Caution is the label didn't send any of its singles to all major radio formats, they only sent them to adult ac and urban ac to die a quick death and not even chart. I see Mariah is following Melissa to Range Entertainment. I'm wondering if they have a plan this go around to fund the radio promo themselves and reach out to the executives of big radio stations to set up deal where she promises to do interviews and Christmas concerts if they put her new singles on rotation. Gone are the days where labels put money behind her. She's going to have to use her contacts and own money to push her songs if she really wants a hit because Epic isn't giving her much support or a decent budget to score a hit. I know she is used to being catered to but if she wants to chart, Mariah and her team are going to have to take matters into their own hands. She has the money and the connections. It's time to put that into action. The Caution Tour was excellent. It really was a tour for the lambs. She did fan favorites like AYNAF and YDKWTD from the I AM album and the ABMB remix. It's my favorite tour so far.

Wow Mara. Thank you so much for sharing these memories, I just got so excited all over again. I could only imagine being there for that Charmbracelet tour. And that last night of Caution sounds epic and amazing. So cool to hear about these shows and picture these moments. I loved that light up dress too.

Ok, we are on the same page. But the artists who are really embracing the genre and keeping the tradition. Alice barely get shine is what I was saying. Cool that Bruno is doing his part, but much like the current day voter suppression, there is a lot if r nd b suppression going on, lol. I love that Ledisi still does the damned thing and many others despite the treatment in the industry. There's a lot still going on, just have to look for it, as is not highlighted or even provided in present radio, etc.

Caution has some great songs, but other than the high notes on "Giving Me Life", there's not much of Mariah's voice in it. I have enjoyed that album though, it is a good album. I would take Caution over MIAMTEC anyday.

Exactly my point. R&B is not a one-layer genre, so why treat it that way? That's what I mean by Old Tired R&B. It has turned boringly formulaic for many artists. I'm not saying Bruno Mars saved R&B, but he's definitely exploring many of its layers making it sound fresh, interesting, and enjoyable. Definitely a breath of fresh air. "Leave the Door Open" is a gem. Miguel's "Adorn" is simply great, I can't count the amount I've played it ever since it was released. Mariah did something similar with the Emancipation of Mimi, she then had some great moments with with some songs here and there, but mostly it was all the same. R&B is multidimensional.

I agree with you Nikki! I went to the Atlantic City Caution show and the Bethlehem show which was the last. Atlantic City was just amazing. The energy, the whole vibe. So much fun and with the Glitter moments. It really was a great tour. I saw MC on her Charmbracelet tour which was the first time I saw her live and that was another unforgettable show and when she came out on stage for the first time in that silver two piece ensemble, I mean - if looks could kill-the audience would have all been dead. Add in the voice. I’m sure you know. I saw the Adventures of MiMi, Angels Advocate, Christmas shows at Beacon (more magical shows, especially the first two years ) and the Madison Square Garden show and Caution. Caution was def one of the most exciting and fun vibe. I loved the black dress that lit up with the pink caution color, the guitar player for My All was a stand out on that tour. I loved how she composed that, she did Portrait and broke down at the AC show which was a moment, and ATYNAF. Her closing in the Bethlehem show was beautiful with how she did Hero in that beautiful pink ball gown and the Tanaka came out with flowers for her on stage as it was her last of Caution. Ugh, this talk makes me miss Mariah on the road. Hoping 2022 brings more live shows and the return of Mariah!

It's weird because 8th Grade has so many fans, yet it's the only Mariah song I can never place immediately. I always have to do a quick lyric search or play the first few bars to know the song. As I'm writing this, I cannot remember it. This is the only song she's ever done that has not, for whatever reason, entered into my head and taken up permanent residence. So weird. It's not even because I don't like it. On the contrary, every time I play it, I love it.

I love 8th grade so much. It reminds me of a specific moment and type of songs back in the day. Let's Stay Together by Eric Benet, Stay by Jodeci, They Don't Know by Jon B, There U Go by Johnny Gill, this is how I hear this song. She did the impossible and literally captured the painful/hopeful/yearning/forlorn feeling of crushing hard in 8th grade. It's the chorus for me. I didn't even know it was possible to capture that energy in music again and yet it happened with this song. Love it so much.

I think that A No No would've at least charted since it's an up-tempto and an easy listener. GTFO caught the attention of both fans and non-fans when it came out, and even trended/hit #1 on iTunes for a short period. I imagine if that was A No No instead, then the numbers and reaction would've been bigger. But yeah, I agree that Cardi, Kim, and Missy would've been a moment and that The Distance could've been one as well.

Edward, Bruno Mars has proven that he can do justice to the great old R and B songs that he pays homage to. The genre has been fun and great, just obscured and segregated Gor the past decade, even barred for the mist part from the Grammys, except for him lately. Still get pissed at how they treated a Miguel with Adorn during his nomination year. Mariah herself has shown some good R and B moments with Dedicated, Me It Look Good and It's a Wrap before that, even Candy Bling. Mariah suffers from writing overwrought, too wordy songs on many not her most recent records. She needs to pare the stories down and craft the songs better and be able to tell it live. I do live Anderson Paak and Bruno on Open. Great song, giving honor to the great Dramatics, Chil-lites, Tavares, etc. Even The Jackson Five.

Agree, I love Caution too! It's better than MIAMTEC, MOAIA, and Charmbracelet. But I guess, it's sales and overall performance has something to do with Mariah's status after 28 years. Rare classic icon produces hit. Only Cher, as I recall, was able to hit No.1 with Believe in 1999 at 51 and Mariah is 48 then. It would be great if Mariah could break this record by Cher. Going back to Caution, I agree with A No No as promo or lead single then, remix followed by Caution (it has the radio vibe), Giving Me Life, and then Stay Long Love You. I think these singles could make a difference in its performance for these are new beautiful sounds of her. The released singles are old formulas. Clearly, it's not working anymore. Now, she can create a new, fresh and infectious sound that most people would love to hear from her. I am still hoping for another WBT moment. Oh well, we can only wish and hope for.
