I don't recall the book talking about Honey being different at first to what was released.

Maybe Clive will be able to give her a big streaming release with a virtual red carpet during Covid. Well obviously you didn't see it, but quite a few people saw it. I don't believe any of these ladies will have a huge theatrical draw just on merits, that will be tied to the actors involved at this point. Whitney in particular has been over saturated already with docs and biopics and Bobby's biopic. Maybe theatres will really open up by 2022 or 2023 though.

Ha ok. I'm talking biopic on the scale of Rocketman and Bohemian Rhapsody theatrical release rather than some Lifetime TV thing which nobody sees. Anyway I'm looking forward to all three.

"Whitney is a 2015 American biographical film directed by Angela Bassett", Wikipedia
"The movie stars Yaya DaCosta as Houston, Arlen Escarpeta as Brown and Yolonda Ross as Houston's longtime friend and road manager Robyn Crawford."

YaYa DaCosta, directed by Angela Bassett. Wikipedia has all the details. It was ok, aired on Lifetime.
Ugh I hate when autocorrect changes a word after so already proofread it. Voice should be Clive and Vivid, Covid in my previous post. It almost said voice twice in this post. Annoying.

The book came out less than 4 months ago. I'm sure that many who listen to the podcast haven't gotten it yet/don't know all the stories the way we do so promoting it makes sense.
The biggest tell that you aren't a fan is saying she puts Tommy down too much given what we know. Shame on you.

Based on the interview with QuestLove I gathered that while Mariah is grateful for the experience, and the success of their work together, that chapter in her life has been written, and she would not like to revisit it when it comes to working with him again.

We probably will not receive a MC16 release this year. MC is not going to rush recording it. I can wait until she is ready to release it. I just want that Bruno Mars collaboration.

Quest Supreme interview pt. 2 (97,144) (97,147)
by ADAM from USA

I couldn't agree with your comments anymore. I found it ridiculous how much QuestLove kept gushing over her 8 minute cameo in Precious. She read a few lines in incognito appearance. Not more should be made of it. She's a terrible actress and shouldn't be encouraged to make more movies. Mariah is not comfortable with aging and feels only secure when she's sexy over the top. You can't be an actor with these kinds of hang ups. I wished QuestLove was more prepared and didn't ask questions that were addressed in the book and also wished he stopped her from her tangents. Way too many. She always repeats the same stories. This could have been a better showcase for her to talk about her extensive catalog, producing partners, jazz music, voice changes, etc. I did appreciate her speaking about Walter A. It seemed like she was throwing some shade towards him. I wished she was asked why she excluded him from the book when he was very critical to her success in the early 90s. Would want to hear in her own words if they would work again. Her always been so positive about her. I also feel like she shits on Tommy so much when his guidance was the reason why she's relevant today - Christmas anyone?

Whitney from 2015. A biopic is a biographical movie, which is what this was. But anyway, there's not much Voice can say. Her story has been told. Not sure if a big screen telling will be any bigger, but in the time if Vivid, it'll likely be on tv anyway, on Netflix or some such streaming service.

O Chicago, wait until the interviewer starts to praise her acting ability and get through it without a facial expression of pure bewilderment. I cannot take anybody seriously who says that Mariah is an actress, let alone a good one. Add that on top of the interviewers having difficulty forming questions and making the narrative flow, spiced with Mariah being so tangential she now has a doctorate in trigonometry, and it's a pretty confusing shit show. Or maybe I am wrong and should listen to it again. I was running while listening. Maybe the linear and purposeful nature of running is what threw me off.

"Lets face it, some of the things she draws from have a lot or almost all to do with her ethnicity."
Almost everything bad that has happened to Mariah in her life she puts down to her race. There's nothing for anyone to be told to confront for it's quite a lot of, if not almost all, of what she is talking about these days.
"POC need this safe space. I could go on but I won't."
If you don't mind (and genuinely) I'd like you to go on. What is it about this podcast that is valuable to non-white people and not valuable to white people? Or do you just mean music artists? The charts are arguably dominated by "POC" or, at least, they are heavily featured. So, in that respect, the group is not a minority group. What kind safe space is required, who or what is it protecting from?
I'm asking genuinely for your opinion and if I disagree with it, this doesn't mean I am going to try to find ways of tearing it down. I don't understand what you mean.

QuestLove (97,142)

Loved the interview, took up my Saturday afternoon with a few splashes. I was delighted to hear her deep dive into AIWFCIY and reveal that Water contributed the bridge to what she had already written, I think we can put this to bed now. Her general respect towards WA was great to hear to.
I was shocked at her attitude toward Caution and how it was released and rushed and also commenting on her owns vocals not being as she would want.
Finally the chick reveal that she is working with potentially a 16 year old actress to reproduce the album, who she can't reveal... it's Millie Bobby Brown from Stranger Things.

Yeeeessss. Mariah definitely needed an interview with this type of setting. Lets face it, some of the things she draws from have a lot or almost all to do with her ethnicity and honey, sometimes people don't get it. POC need this safe space. I could go on but I won't. The point is, we get it Mariah. Thank you to QuestLove and his crew. We love them.

Just listened to part 2. Love this interview so much. I loved how they all were on the same wave and same energy as Mariah. This woman has stories for days and it's amazing. And then they drop the bomb on us and play Hermit from the Chic album. Mariah we need this album please. Like seriously.

I can honestly say that I enjoyed both parts equally. Yes she made mention of the book throughout the interview but it did not bother me at all. I appreciate that she was able to be herself in a comfortable setting amongst people who she could trust, and who understand who she is. Even with the extra commentary I was entertained. Bravo to Mariah for being so open, and to QuestLove and company for allowing her the space on your platform to be able to express her thoughts, and feelings so freely.

Mariah's analysis of AIWFCIY (97,136)
by Geronimo from USA
| |
|
|
I'm super impressed by both the intelligence to ask about the relationship between blues and pop harmony/melodies on this song as well as Mariah's astute analysis. Listening to her singing the melody and then identify the scale degree that makes the difference between two distinct cultural expressions is precisely the difference between a serious artist and a commercial product. Also, the conversation about her cowriter was also appropriate to music culture and far more interesting than all the pointless and paternalistic banter that takes up so much space.

Super relevant interview (97,135)
by Geronimo from USA
| |
|
|
This interview is perfect. It's what journalism is supposed to give us: culturally informed professionals who understand what counts as real cultural relevance. She literally brought Aretha Franklin's presence back to our physical lives in such a culturally relevant way simply because she gets it. And she brought James Brown into the conversation from an encounter that took place 30 years ago, reminding us what tradition she draws from on the deepest level. Commercial pop culture is so shallow in that it has always tried to make Mariah Carey into a generic retail product isolated on the pinnacle of Billboard "success" and otherwise "irrelevant" in comparison to the "next" and the "next" singing female product selected for promotion. Billboard was always the least interesting part about her (although we do love success). This interview reminds me the difference between silly games and cultural history. And she even mentioned "Till the end of Time", which is one of the absolute best recordings she ever made.

Having heard both parts I can tell you I found it rambling and nonsensical, with tangent upon tangent. It seems like the interviewers, and Mariah alike, start sentences they have no idea how to end. It's difficult to listen to. Also, there is nothing revealed that is not in the book, I don't think. It was basically a three hour commercial for the book. And not a very good one.
