Re: #30YearsOfLove (94,111) (94,122) by MusicfanJ from Germany
"Vision of love" is the ultimate Mariah song, so it was truly the best to show the world there's a new star with a phenomenel voice. I can't believe it all started 30 years ago. I still love the debut album and the look. Yes it has some 80ies vibes, her look and the production of "Prisoner" but hey it was released in 90, so it's understandable.

Here's a little story to VOL: I was 5 when it was released so definitily too young to knew what was going on. But my mum bought the album [immediately] after [hearing] VOL. She told me later when I became a fan with "Daydream". She said she heard her voice and was blown away. She went to a record store and described for what she was searching. A new young, female singer who is [already] at number one. Voila Mariah Carey, the salesman knew who the voice must be. And then with Daydream in 95 I became a fan for life. I still have the LP "Mariah Carey" from my mother. She "gave" me the good music taste. Haha. Anyway I'm so happy that thirty years ago MC started to give her music to us, she made music history from day one. And she made so many people happy since her first vision. Thank you Mariah.

I couldn't even read it so I stopped. But that's not a nice thing to say.

Re: The debut era (94,119) (94,120) by Bill from the UK
I Don't Wanna Cry was the intended second single according to an old press release I have. It then got pushed back to after Someday as Tommy said in his book he wanted an up-tempo track for the third single after two ballads. He writes it was always the plan to launch her with two ballads (unconventional at the time), but Love Takes Time was considered the better song when it materialised. As for There's Got to Be a Way, that was the fourth single across Europe instead of I Don't Wanna Cry. I agree, the remixes for that song were her worst, although they did contain some unused vocals that didn't appear on the album version, so they aren't a complete write off.

Re: The debut era (94,113) (94,119) by The Real Deal from USA
I couldn't disagree more. The debut album is my second favorite in her catalog (my #1 is Emotions). All four singles from it hit #1 in USA. I also think that "There's Got To Be A Way" was intended as the second or fourth single if "Love Takes Time" wasn't included last minute on the album. My reason for thinking this is because if you watch The First Vision video, it is played in various parts and during the end credits. The remix version that they ended up using as the single version was horrendous though lol.

I think the original lineup of singles (pre Love Takes Time inclusion) was: 1) Vision Of Love, 2) Someday 3) I Don't Wanna Cry 4) There's To Be A Way (album version or edit of album version).

I am so happy about Emotions ranking so high. To this day, it is my favorite Mimi album.

Re: Slant Magazine article (94,115) (94,116) by Bill from the UK
Great article, thanks for sharing it. I more or less agree with the ranking, especially pleased to see Emotions get the acknowledgment it deserves. One paragraph did floor me a bit: "Luckily, it still exists as it was conceived, complete with Mariah’s unapologetic deployment of her powerful instrument, and free of the reproach of the same critics who would, in just a few years’ time, lament its inevitable deterioration." So true, and so sad.

In honour of the VOL anniversary, Slant Magazine ranked all of MC's albums. Fun read yet debatable.

I thought TTR was great. MIH was a little screechy but I loved the creative arrangements. I didn't think there were any parts that were lipped. We as fans scrutinize Mariah so much. We dissect every lip, eye, mouth, hand movement and forget to just enjoy the performance. After reading comments from the general public and even some "vocal coaches" the majority loved the performance and thought it was good. People acknowledge that Mariah's voice has changed over the years. Alot of the comments I read people are judging Mariah's vocal performances based on her current voice. I was almost passed out when she sang MIH. That is my favorite Mariah Carey song of all time. Ok Mariah, please sing AYNAF so I can pass out again.

The debut era (94,113) by Andrew from the United Kingdom
I don't particularly like the debut era, I never have. I discovered Mariah upon the release of Music Box. I went back to MTV Unplugged and loved it (obviously) and to Emotions which I thought was decent enough. But the debut album and era? As people would say in the 90's: totally naff. I didn't like the album cover or some of the other photography, I didn't like her outfits, I didn't like her hair (all in all I think Mariah is shot to look like a prostitute on the streets at night a lot), I didn't like some of the songs (There's Got To Be A Way and Prisoner are just cringe), I thought the production was very mid 80's (and has definitely not stood the test of time - having known Love Takes Time and Someday from Here is Mariah Carey I was shocked to hear the production on the album), I don't like the way she sings the songs live ("Treated me kind-ahhh, sweet destinyyyyy-ahhh"), and so on. And she is way too thin.

So there's my little moment of joy to ruin the anniversary lol. But I am sure some people must agree with me. For me, Mariah started properly as a star with Emotions and as a superstar with Music Box. The debut era is a hideous mess best left alone.

I don't remember anniversaries, but yesterday I started the day with playing that song for my class (by accident) while they were washing their hands (as a new morning routine).

Probably I'm not a true lamb because I like the performance. Probably it has lipped parts, still I like it. I like everything: the song selection, the new arrangement, the voice. And I like the way she looks. Not to thin, not to skinny, just on point and healthy.

First vision (94,108) by Brad from USA
Mysterious and yet instantly reflective of the truest part of you. Validating of meritocracies that heretofore had largely begun to crumble. Inimitable. Boding of the legacy to be built. Siren for the gathering of the world's lambs. That was the first vision. That has always informed the anticipation of more. For having been there and experienced it, we stand as grateful. Forever. Thank you, VOL and Mariah. We love you, always. We appreciate ya, we enjoy ya and we love ya. Stay safe and well and here's to another 30.

I was late to the party with this one, didn't really fully appreciate the song until the late 90's, when I could fully appreciate the lyrics, delivery and arrangement. It must have been incredible to be a part of the debut era.

I really still enjoy the performance, dubbed or not. I've heard her sing worse, again dubbed and not. Mariah seemed to be really feeling the performance, it was nice to see some energy and soul. I think she made the best with what she's got and I loved that she changed it up a little.

Yes, Happy anniversary to the first and fairest of them all. What an introduction. There wasn't any doubt that she would go on to conquer the world. To think of the impact Mariah has had on my life is almost too much to comprehend.

This pop classic was the perfect introduction to music world. Who knew 30 years later we would be celebrating an amazing achievement, and milestone. Thank you Mariah for realizing a dream, and blessing the world with your incredible gifts as a singer/songwriter/producer. We salute you for being great, and being someone who can speak to us, and for us whenever we are in need through your amazing catalog of music. Happy 30 anniversary to Vision Of Love.

Listening to Caution (94,103) by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
It's been a long time since I listened to Caution. And I think that the album got rave reviews is because it's not really a Mariah album, Mariah was experimental and that payed off.

I have read the critical messages about Mariah's latest performance of MIH/TTR, she being nasal, not able to sing like she used to, and I agree. Her not being able to sing is what made Caution, she couldn't sing on that album either, relying heavily on production.

Mariah should sing in the register she has now, also her older songs. She should release an album with ballads an uptempo songs in her lower register.

The songbird supreme (94,102) by Terna from Nigeria
"Treated me kind, sweet destiny." The first phrase we ever heard from Mariah Carey and the rest they say was history. I'm not gonna pretend and act like I experienced this song in real time when it first came out because I didn't, I was 7 then and still too young to fully grasp, but just like my all time favorite songs have in common, when the time was right, this song found me. That was the summer of 1998. I was a budding Lamb, and already knew Mariah Carey, had her "Butterfly" album and was really enjoying it then one day boom while watching MTV, and simultaneously recording favorite music videos (lol the good old VHS days), this song played and boy was I floored, such an other worldly experience. And to make it even better, "Love Takes Time" played shortly after. Haha. Been an avid fan ever since, unapologetically and held her down even when the world turned their backs on her. Much respect to you Mariah and so much more love. You are appreciated much more than you know.

30 years ago I was 11 years old sitting in the backseat listening to the radio and I heard this beautiful voice singing this equally beautiful song that was so mesmerizing and magical. I was absolutely floored. I didn't care how she looked or what she wore, I just wanted to hear more. I ran home and found the cassette my sister had of this album (yes I stole it and never gave it back lol). From that day on I was hooked. I couldn't have asked for a better introduction than VOL.

I also find the performance not so pleasant to the ears. But surprisingly it was good according to the general people who isn't fan of hers because I sent it to them and ask what they think. One also said that Mariah's voice definitely has change but it's still beautiful.
