Re: Ranked album covers/photography (93,968) (93,999) by TJ from Norway
I need to have a look at my collection again. I think I made a lot of bad choices on that list I made. The Open Arms cover should have been included instead of ILT.

Celine Dion (93,998) by Terna from Nigeria
This wasn't just only fun to watch, but also informative on the recording process and how an album is put together. I loved the behind the scenes of the duet with Barbra Streisand, the recording of "The Reason" and the other duet with the late great Pavarotti.

The record already came out in a box set.

Nice write up and interesting read. For me that album isn't a favorite at all. It reminds me of a time when it was hardest to be a Mariah Carey fan as she was basically washed up or burnt out so it seemed everyone had moved on from her. Smh. Except true fans. This was also the era she named her fan-base "lamb" if I recall correctly. In every sense of the word, it is indeed Mariah's weakest offering out of her whole catalogue (weak shot airy vocals, terrible rushed production, hideous song cover, and collaborations thrown together just because), but a pivotal record. This era was where she slowed down, acknowledged she had been written off and where she was at in her career, owned it and began putting in measures in order for the next era. And the rest was mind blowing history. Lol.

Well in Germany "Without you" went to number one. "Everything fades away" is one of her best songs. I know a person who only listens to Hip Hop and even he loves "EFA". That says a lot. Music Box is a great album. Yes a bit too smaltzy for some ears but every song is perfection. "MB the song", "AYNAF", "Never forget you" and "EFA" are another level, MC at her best. And the artwork is very beautiful too. Natural beauty Mariah.

It hit number one virtually everywhere it was released except the US.

Thanks Andy for the lovely compliments, you are a sweetheart, however I have to disagree. I do share some tiny similarities to Mariah but I'm far from her twin, Mariah is a classic beauty who I can't compare too but all the same, thank you. Right now my hair looks like sideshow Bobs, I have acne and deep bags under my eyes, all thanks to having migraine attacks every other day at the moment, my main pregnancy symptom. But all will worth it in the end so trust me, I ain't no Mariah.

Everything Fades Away is one of her best songs from the entire 90s era. And I definitely admit even the schmaltzy MB songs are brilliant. I'll always be bitter about Without You not hitting #1. No torch song has ever been sung better.

Re: Ranked album covers/photography (93,984) (93,991) by Bill from the UK
Agree that it's not the best representation of Mariah's sound overall, I'd say either the coveted holy trinity of Daydream, Butterfly or Emancipation capture that. However, I do think Music Box had some of her best remixes and b sides. Do You Think of Me is astonishing, Everything Fades Away is probably her best closing track, and the Def Club Mix of Dreamlover (pioneering the re-sung vocals for remixes movement) and the Anytime You Need a Friend C&C Club Mix, with Mariah scatting at the end, are phenomenal.

Sure, raincloud, I forgot that being obvious was such a crime here. Anyways, sure, just like every post I make here, I'mma make sure I squeeze that into my schedule. No biggie.

Re: Justice for Angels Advocate (93,986) (93,989) by Bill from the UK
Hmmm. I'd rather it didn't. If the cut and paste "duets" on Me I Am Mariah were an indication of the quality I'd rather they stay buried in the vault. These "justice for" campaigns are getting a bit out of hand now. Glitter, fine. E=MC2 was a global hit album around the world, with her highest selling first week sales ever, and a number one in the USA. Why does that need justice? I would rather see the demo tape released, rather than AA. But who am I?

Thank-you for yet another lecture, Professor Obvious. What with your lectures and We Are Lambily constantly listing Mariah's achievements we are all very well informed of the bleedin' obvious and will likely do well in our exams.

Wait, you are setting exams, too, right? I hope this studying isn't all for nothing.

Ah Kylie. She always has her image in check. She never looks bad, she reinvents herself and updates her sound with every album release just about the right amount; she knows how to balance being cute, sexy, edgy and glamorous and always dresses appropriately for her age and body type. Regardless of how her music performs, she manages to ensure that everything she does serves her brand well. A little too safe by current celebrity standards, but consistency can go a long way. Mariah and many other female celebs can learn a thing or two from her.

December 23, 2003, her last CB tour stop in Southern California. 15 rows back, dead center. She sounded so good that night. I remember like it was yesterday too.

Re: Ranked album covers/photography (93,981) (93,984) by Musti from UK
She does look pure and beautiful in that cover. But personally I've never been able to look at the Music Box cover as separate from the sound of the album itself. It's no surprise that this is her best-selling album as it's a sound she has perfected, but it's also the pinnacle of her schmaltz days which never really reflected her as an artist. Not only are most songs devoid of the R&B and hip hop sounds she loves, but the cover itself is probably the most whitewashed moment of her career. For this reason I've never been able to connect with the album or its artwork.

Andrew, I guess I should have explained. I can see why you replied in the way you did. I've always considered Side Effects from the lens of "She wrote it because she needed to and it was cathartic, even though it was painful to do it." I would want those I loved to know that I faced my pain and found freedom in doing so. I guess that's why I said express the feeling. I'm still not sure that it makes sense, but that's the best explanation I can have.

Re: Ranked album covers/photography (93,979) (93,981) by Bill from the UK
This is so strange because I think the Music Box album cover (CD version, not the half face cassette many of us had at the time) really is the best at capturing her beauty. It isn't airbrushed to within an inch of its life, it's not trying to be sexy, it's not legs akimbo or arms behind her head. She's not blue. It's just Mariah, in all her understated, timeless, classic beauty. So odd you feel it doesn't do her justice. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they say.

A couple of years ago someone I was seeing created a FB for me with my picture. I've never accessed it. She got dumped. I assume now it still exists. Although I do wonder how you found it.

I don't use social media as a specific choice. I am, however, open to WhatsApp friendships which I think are more personal and mean more as I have made a few good friends saying hello over text and call when we want to check in. Not least Martyn and Jadakiss who I actually met, who is - not joking - as beautiful as Mariah. Jade is Mariah's twin.

Email me and I can send you my number.

Re: Ranked album covers/photography (93,977) (93,979) by Andrew from the United Kingdom
I have documented it here but as a quick recap: I first came across Mariah when I was in the kitchen with my mother and I heard a voice coming from the living room. I walked into it, quite mesmerized I saw Mariah filmed at Proctor's Theatre in Upstate NY and I couldn't speak. The most amazing voice I'd ever heard was coming out of the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. I could not believe it. I had, until then, adored Kylie, if you please. That a woman so beautiful could sing this way floored me. I thought this was the reason the Earth was created. I became obsessed.

I had Music Box on cassette until 1996. Aside from the lyrics showing through the whiteness and being dastardly I don't think it shows Mariah's "beauty" as you rightly labelled it. It's two eyes, a nose and a mouth. Well, forgive me if I cancel the clown.

There is something about how she looks, as equally as there is something about the tone of her voice. It is the reason I vociferate about the [censored] (Eric's gonna block that word but I mean it) awful cartoon album covers she does, and why I hate her airbrushing and why I hate her tilting her head like the good people of New Zealand are doing Morse code through the core of the planet. It is nonsense. She is beautiful.

Few of us on Earth are as blessed as someone like Mariah Carey. Mariah Carey is beautiful. Music Box does not show it. Daydream did revealed it more. The Butterfly spin helped.

I long for the day when Mariah looks after her body more, owns her own image and gives me what she used to be. Unbridled beauty. We should all be so lucky to have that. I think she's wasting it in the name of gluttony and, well, a mental unwellness that could be helped.

Re: Ranked album covers/photography (93,952) (93,977) by Bill from the UK
You were right and I did stop reading after number 2 initially before composing my list. But having now revisited, how come Music Box is so low? It's just her lovely face, and she was appaz paying homage to a picture of Marilyn Monroe in a similar pose. It's such a classic look and why I currently have it as my picture. The cropping was pretty horrific on the cassette though.

In fact there are three Butterfly covers: the eyes-open version, the eyes-closed version and the close-up version. I like the close-up version the best.

I agree. That's the first copy of Butterfly I bought too, but in Puerto Rico, and has remained as my favorite cover from any of her albums. During a moving situation, I lost my copy. Sadly when I went back to get a copy, they only had the other version.
