Mariah is not just a musical genius, she's also a great vocalist. Get it together, Edward.

When I Saw You is so underrated. I've always loved that song. When my friend's mom was getting married, she was having a hard time picking the song for their first dance, so I suggested When I Saw You, and after listening to it, she turned to me and said that's the song.

With You was an Adult Contemporary and Adult R&B hit, but I don't think it'll experience a resurgence like A No No might or the album as a whole. By the way, Caution is still on the R&B Album Sales chart.

I rememeber when my mom bought me the Daydream CD in 1995. I loved it instantly but Fantasy, Melt Away and When I Saw You really captivated me. Those 3 songs are in my top ten today. Great album. Great time to be a Mariah fan.

Daydream. My favorite. I mean, my avatar says it all, lol. Well said, so much so that I can't add another word to your thoughts. I feel the same way about that time during the mid 1990s too.

Lmfao. You are such a B. No pun intended. Listen, With You really is a slow burner. I really hope it gets a Grammy nomination. That'll be hilarious.

Daydream (90,984)
by Edward from USA

Those of us who experience Daydream with everything that was happening in the music scene at that time are lucky. Looking back it was like a magical time, in which music was mother-effing-great. Everybody was killing it, from Mariah to The Cranberries. "Underneath The Stars" was an instant hit with me, but "When I Saw You" and "Melt Away" stole my heart. The whole album was ethereal. Every time I popped the cassette in and hit play, it was as if I was transported to a fantasy land, in which Mariah's voice made everything possible. Oh how I miss those days, and the nuances of the her voice back then.

Fantasy was the first Mariah song I heard, and I was enraptured. I had my grandmother buy me the cd single. Daydream was the first album that I bought and I still have the cassette.

I will never forget that period. Fantasy was ruling the airwaves all summer, and I remember waiting so eagerly for the album to release. I came home from school on the day, pretty dejected that I wouldn't get to hear it until the weekend, only to find my lovely mum had gone out and got the CD for me, and taped it to the inside window of the front porch, so I saw it as I walked (and than sprinted lol) up the front path. I played the album all night and recorded it onto a blank tape for my Walkman for my trips to and from school. I remember sitting on the stairs in the hall with my mum and I got to the lyric sheet. All summer I could not decipher what she sang after "feels like I'm dreaming" on the Tom Tom Club sample. Every member of the family heard something different. When I read "feels like I'm dreaming but I'm not sleeping" out loud, my family chorused an "ahhhh of course" together.
I really hope Mariah does commemorate the anniversary with something special, though it was unfortunate to see her other albums hit the milestone with nothing special. The deluxe should unearth that infamous Underneath the Stars video, shrouded in mystery.
I was playing the Daydream singles recently, can anyone help me out. Fantasy was released on two CD singles in the UK. The "blue sleeve" version had the "Bad Boy with ODB" mix that appeared on many compilations later, and the "white sleeve" version had "Puffy's Mix". The only audible difference I can hear is there is no echo on the "jump jump" line in the rap on the second mix. Am I missing anything or was that really the only difference?

It was released on September 29th in Norway. Remember it well. Next year both "Daydream" and her debut album should be celebrated. To Mariah (if she ever reads these messages ): we need re-releases with some extras.

Two weeks ago, I revived my gold vinyl-press of Daydream from "Vinyl Me Please" and I forgot how flawless this album is. Fantasy is my life anthem (favourite song of alllll time), but my goodness does Long Ago, Underneath the Stars, Melt Away and When I Saw You, blow my mind on Vinyl. I remember this album was the exact moment Mariah transitioned from my mom's favourite artist (in the adult contemporary vain of Celine, Vanessa Williams etc.) to my absolute queen. Every summer we would do a road trip as a family from Guelph, Ontario to the Atlantic Maritimes (Halifax, PEI, Moncton, St. John's etc) and Daydream was one album the family could all get on board with blasting on cassette, in our '93 Mazda MPV (even my Nirvana-fan-bro of a brother was down). I also love after hearing this album in vinyl, I could identify what she did on Daydream was a foreshadowing of what she did on "Caution". Long Ago and Melt Away could fit beautifully on Caution, right after "With You".

Daydream (90,976)

Twenty four years ago today our queen released one of the best albums ever. This album gave Mariah her wings as the greatest female artist in opinion. She gave variety and her voice on this album really put the listener in a dream world so the title itself was a great representation. Also the transition of sound with the pop, and R&B, A/C, and hip hop was truly effortless. Happy 24th anniversary to a pop masterpiece Daydream.

You made me think of how it felt to hear those songs back in the day. The second verse of When I Saw You played in my mind. Such memories hearing that magical voice while having so much life and wonder ahead. You just inspired me to listen to it again. Typos and all.

Happy 24th anniversary Daydream (90,972)

For many fans this is the quintessential Mariah album. Can you believe it has been 24 years? Next year will be the silver anniversary. Hopefully MC has something up her sleeve for that, I'd totally buy a proper deluxe version. I will never forget the first listens I had of the monster hits Fantasy and One Sweet Day. For me though with this album over time it has been the lesser known deep cuts that only ate really talked about by fans, songs like Slipping Away, When I Saw You, Underneath The Stars (shout out to the drifting remix) Melt Away, Forever and Looking In that are stand out essentials for me. As fans we can talk about how she can make improvements all day long. What always remains for me is that there is no one in the world with that unmistakable sound. Her unique voice, is gorgeous to me and just makes me happy.

All that, plus Celine has not been involved in multiple lip sync scandals and bad performances like Mariah has. I mean, we all know Celine lip syncs, but she's so good at it that you can't tell if you're just a casual concert goer. Also, if need be Celine can still sing well; maybe not as well as she used to, but she can still when she's asked to sing and not be dodgy or awkwardly scared about doing it (ie Carpool karaoke and the like).

Agree, though I suspect MC would have done a demo or something at the time in 1994, so that would be even better to hear Prime Mariah sing the hell out of that song.

I agree with you Edward, as I always do, when we discuss Mariah. I just hope that Mariah can change her reputation, because as we know, the music doesn't make money on album sales anymore, and she need people to buy her tickets. Btw: ITM is playing on repeat here. Just love the beat.

The 90s diva trifecta (90,968)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
|
|
These three are held in the same pantheon because although they did the same big voiced, diva pop, that was pretty much the only thing they had in common. Each of them occupied a different space in the industry back then; they had different strengths and weaknesses, and they had their own loyal fanbases. Whitney, the more soulful one, was able to carry her from the 80s into the 90s, and most of her older listeners were likely fans of Aretha and Dionne. Celine, the most mainstream pop one, had many fans who loved Barbra and Karen. Mariah, the more versatile one, inherited fans of Diana, Minnie and Patti. Of course these fandoms would overlap in one way or another, but that's what it would generally look like if their listeners would had to be profiled and classified.
Since Celine has established her identity as a live, big venue performer and has catered to the safest, broadest adult contemporary pop audience, it's not surprising that she sells more tickets than Mariah. People admire Celine because of her lungs of steel, discipline and extremely inoffensive image. She is someone who has played it safe her entire career. Mariah, on the other hand, is revered mostly for her musical contributions and artistry, and whatever fans she has now love her because they are aware of how her music affected their lives.

I like that you used the word "relevant" because that's the only thing Celine has lacked since the early 2000s (and, of course, not ever being able to write lyrics and compose music). Mariah might be on another level, but Celine is an extremely gifted singer. A common mistake people make is to overlook her French albums, which have always been far more superior than her English body of work. She's not just a vocalist. She's an artist. And that's something that never dies regardless of the state of your voice or how relevant you are.
