What’s with all the Old Town Road hate? In 2019, the cultural significance of this song is massive, given the state of 'Merica right now; a gay black rapper with a country legend, doing country-hip-hop fusion is pretty groundbreaking. We praise Mariah for her hip-pop fusion that lead to the new pop normal, so why not appreciate what this song has done? The novelty of this genre bending song, along with a gay black rapper getting a number one song on Billboard is pretty significant.

"The more you know" also features a rainbow (90,442)

I promised almost 20 years ago not to say anything, but I was in a position to get an official statement, and then got something more off the record. If you think back to all the music videos of MC's Rainbow era you'll notice they're all cheap except the one she spent millions on of her own fortune. TGIFY was filmed during a live radio station summer concert. The rest were filmed at private residences and the remixes were bare bones. There's a reason for that. She used to get a high 6 figures per video. After her divorce she was given $30,000. That's also why I Still Believe was filmed like it was. Her album promo was cut in half. Mariah took it upon herself to find a sponsor in Walmart to push her album. She did the biggest self-promo tour of her career and came to the Midwest for the first time since her debut. She was still pushing Heartbreaker when they began "testing" CTTA. She didn't think the song was a hit, it was simply important to her. That was on top of J.Lo dressing up like her and confusing the media on who is who. Mottola didn't want HB released, MC had to go over his head to the higher ups at Sony to get the Rainbow project green lit. That's when he gave her only a couple of months to get it done. Once it was, he put a pause on her project to push J.lo's debut. Hurry up and wait.
MC signed up to Divas and created a tribute to Diana Ross. J.Lo slapped the same song onto her Euro album and released it as a single. MC, now, wasn't allowed to release hers later that year. She had no time to do anything new either since Rainbow was now green lit and she had to push it. Divas was all impromptu, because she had to spend rehearsal creating a tribute in time for the show the following day.
When the Latin explosion died with JL.Lo's 3rd single she tried to jump back on the hip-pop train and emulated MC's My All remix video for her last single. It didn't help her, but it was enough for MC to decide to get the hell off Sony's label.

Just proves how sad music has sunk. Talentless songs like OTR can dethrone one of the greatest female voices of all time and Boyz II Men, who have amazing voices themselves.

Tell us how you really feel, lol. Kidding. For a long time I hated CTTA. Ok hated is a strong word. Didn't care for it. I preferred such self help songs as Make It Happen or Hero. That all changed in 2003. I was at the final show of her CB tour in Southern California. Sat 15 rows back, dead center. The fans voted CTTA be sung that night. I was going through some stuff crap and the message of that song resonated with me like it never had before. So while I've gone back to not listening to the song as much, I can see why others like it. Actually I find myself listening to the Morales radio edit. The slower version tends to put me to sleep. That's not a good thing if I'm driving.

He can break the record. With the way it's going, it will probably stop at 18 or 19 weeks. In the streaming era, it doesn't really mean anything anymore anyway.
"Oh wow 18 weeks at number cause people pay $10 a month to stream a million different songs." It is a useless record now lol.

That songs like Old Town Road can go for 16 weeks tells you something about what these records mean anymore. Let the record go. It's all meaningless now.

The video go CTTA is another shit-show of epic proportions. It starts with nobodies moaning about victimhood as if they are entitled to a life free of hardship. Then as the sacharine strings kick in, they tell you how good the song is and that it empowers. So already the desperation is dripping in. Imagine if other songs started by telling you what you should feel about them. Just no.
I question what these hardships have got to do with people taking your inner confidence away. Shawn was poor but played football and studied? Right. The girl with HIV lived longer than expected? Okay. Not sure other people are actually doing anything to them. Ernie was a gang member and shot 4 times and now has a job? How many people did he shoot himself? Or was he the *good* gang member who just cleaned the guns of fingerprints and helped little old ladies across the road? Come off it with this. And enough said about Lance Armstrong the better. Awks. I guess the peoole he cheated out of their rightful victories have this song to help them through.
The worst thing is (no, not the cheap set that looked like it was stolen from a daytime talkshow pilot that was never picked up) Mariah's vanity-shot laden performance. The endless close-ups and pouty lipsync border on nauseating, but where she spins and falls to the ground rescues it for the sheer laughable insanity of it, so much that you've almost forgotten that she's writing pensively in a notebook in the beginning. Because she wrote the song, don't you know?
And then, finally, after the uncomfortable weirdness of Mariah spinning, smiling in front of a picture of herself as a girl randomly interjected into the faux tears and arm-flailing, the rainbow appears. With everyone wishing Tommy Mottola was at the end of it to scrap the whole project.
CTTA didn't fail because of lack of promotion. It failed because the song is really not very good and the video is terrible. It is essentially Mariah trying to scream victimhood whilst steeped in vanity. Why was anyone anywhere and forever going to get on board with that?

Oh Andrew I never thought of the "theme thing" until now. You're right it's a bit weird with the third person. Superstars like to talk about themselves as a third person? I don't know.

She's known for referring to herself in the third person; she even does it on Caution (One Mo Gen). If anyone can have their own, theme song, it's Mariah Carey.

I am a little disappointed MC's record is not going to stand come next week only because the one song that tied it and the one that will probably beat it aren't really quality songs. Oh well, life goes on. Lil Nas X is begging for streams so he can break the record. That's fine and good, but he really should be throwing his weight behind another single/song so that he doesn't become a mega one hit wonder. Macarena. Despicito.

I don't mind the song at all and MC is very much entitled to name a song about persistance and being strong Mariah's Theme. It's just that the videos were so schmaltzy and not very well made. I can imagine though that many a fan found strength in the lyrics of CTTA.

Andrews, Mariah is on an unholy quest to "fame her name". It means she sings "My Holy Night" on Christmas and not "O Holy Night", so you'll only find self-centrered things on her shows. Eat it.

Everything about CTTA is cringe inducing (and no criticism I have ever made of it gets past Eric the destroyer). Not least the fact that she called it "Mariah's Theme". Forget for a minute, while you choke back your own vomit, that she is referring to herself in the third person, a person can have a "theme"? Movies have themes. Fancy dress parties have themes. Can a person have a frickin theme? Nope. You can have a signature song - and that's Hero for Mariah. But a theme? Take your tings and be on your merry way.

The Rainbow tour was a shambolic mess, full of childish distractions to hide the fact that her voice was pretty sore at that point in time. That she ever got people to greenlight it is a mystery. That stupid boxing match with Bianca, the awful video montages, the pathetic fake crying in Petals, the ridiculous beauty pageant? Ugh. I wanted to see a concert like the ones I had slashed through daily on VHS and DVD. Instead I got a silly, self-indulgent shit-show of epic proportions. There is something virtuous in not taking yourself too seriously. There is nothing to be gained in making people think you don't take yourself seriously at all.

I feel you Andrew. The day of the Antwerp concert in 1999 (don't mention our age) of the Rainbow tour I was so excited. I couldn't believe I was going to be in the same space as my idol. A shame though that the first concert of the European leg was such a mess. She was two hours late and most of the props needed on stage hadn't arrived from the US yet. But I couldn't care less at the time despite it not being a great concert. But she did redeem herself with the stop of the Charmbracelet tour in Rotterdam in 2003. That show, despite being on a much smaller scale, had very high production values and her voice was on fire that night. I wish I could see her in Vegas one time but my bank manager begs to differ. For now.

Glitter being number 1 at iTunes is great, it's good for the album's visibility and bragging rights. But iTunes is irrelevant. It becoming Apple chart is their way of phasing it out so they can fully push their streaming service. Sorry but just saying the truth.

I remember being in school and it was a boiling hot day. And for the whole day I couldn't concentrate because Mariah Carey was in my country and I couldn't believe how close I was to her. I faced London and played Daydream when I got home. Don't nobody tell me I don't love Mariah some. Can't nobody, can't nobody tell me nuttin'.

iTunes charts will not be irrelevant, as they will become the Apple Charts, so slow your role. And yes, I applaud the person that wrote "iTunes is irrelevant, except when Glitter was #1 on it". Hahaha. As a matter of fact, I always see the younger generation talking about iTunes and Spotify charts way before they talk about the Billboard charts. So perhaps it is Billboard that is irrelevant now.

Sony wanted to release X-Girlfriend as the third single and Mariah wanted CTTA (Mariah's Theme) released instead so Sony released it but gave it a limited release with zero promotion. I understand why Mariah didn't want to release X-Girlfriend since it sounded like No Scrubs and Bills, Bills, Bills but it would've been a stronger single.
