Agreed. Her voice was in fine form during the recording of Glitter.

I agree with you buddy. The Rainbow Tour was a mess vocally and production wise. My first time seeing Mariah was not all I had imagined it to be. But I did spend most of it beaming and the entirety of Hero crying. A dream come true to be in the same room as that woman.
So I believed Lead The Way was written for Butterfly, recorded for Rainbow and used on Glitter. N'est-ce pas? In any event, what is the consensus? Is there a cut and paste job on the last note? There is one point at which I can hear the possibility.
William, your opinion would be welcomed. It really does matter to me. I think the song is somewhat supreme amongst Mariah Carey songs.

Funny that you would link that video Edward. I was in the audience that night and some parts was dubbed on the TV version. Other parts was just playback or what you call it. Her voice was in so bad condition because of a cold or something. She could hardly speak.

Yeah I was going to chime in and say I thought LTW was a leftover from Butterfly, so was recorded in that period. The publishing stamp says 1997.

I have seen the Rainbow tour in Antwerp. The very first time I saw MC live in concert. She did sound good but not great. At the Christmas show in Brussels last December she was on fire. She has gained a lot of confidence when it comes to her stage presence over the last years.

Naw, there is no copy and paste in Lead The Way. I have said it before and I will say it again, Glitter is Mariah's last powerhouse vocal album period. I do agree LTW should have been single but they went with Never Too Far Away which is another superior powerhouse vocal track. During the Rainbow tour Mariah's voice was in great shape. During the Charmbracelet tour her voice was in epic shape even though the album vocals do not reflect that. Imagine if she sang LTW during the Charbracelet tour. I can't even deal.

It was written during the Butterfly sessions but wasn't recorded until 2000/2001.

I've always known the long note in "Butterfly" was cut and paste to prolong the note. If you listen closely, you can hear it, it was obviously impossible to replicate that life or pretend she was even trying it in front of an audience. At Diana's Tribute she lipped the note as it was sung in the studio before they cut and pasted. It was easier doing that with Butterfly because there was a lot going on in the background in that song, but with "Lead The Way" the situation is different. With no distractions in the background, you can clearly hear Mariah's voice flowing along without any weird change in key or studio tweaking. You have to remember "Glitter" was supposed to be to Mariah what "The Bodyguard" was to Whitney, so Mariah went all out vocally in that album, especially in "Lead The Way". I do agree with you, the whistle note is perfectly placed, and the last note is out of this world. "Lead The Way" is simply epic.

If you think that is actually Mariah recording the vocals to LTW you probably think this is genuine, too.

I think it's a cut and paste job. Only because she was in such a bad voice during and after Rainbow. However I will day [sic] after the Glitter breakdown that voice came back full force and she totally could've done it. But then again the note isn't that high; it's just long and height in her full voice is what she lacked in 00 when the album was recorded. Hmmmm I don't know now lol. I could see Lead The Way coming between Heartbreaker and Bliss so I think your substitution is valid. Oh and btw I love Can't Take That Away.

The whistle from "Bringin' On The Heartbreak" and the long note from "Lead The Way" ending in a stratospheric high climax. Angelic.

How mad are you all going to be if it's Trey's new music and not her own? In all the albums she has ever done I've never seen an article mention Trey as a long time collaborator. I hope I'm wrong, but that's how I interpreted it. *shrugs*

Lead the Way (89,922)
by Andrew from London UK

LTW undoubtedly has one of the best placed and most beautiful whistle phrase in Mariah's catalogue. So I went back to listen to it. I think even more than Migrate, this should have been a single. If it were the second song and so for on Rainbow instead of Can't Take (the schmaltz? the crap video? the awful lyrics?) Away it would probably be known everywhere as a classic Mariah song. I wish more people could hear it.
But I have always wondered: is the last note sung in one go or is it a cut and paste job like Butterfly? There seems to be only one place in it where that could have been done. Does anyone have any insight?

One of my favourites is very niche: My All - Beijing, 2014. That last note is so unexpected but blends in really well. I'd love to have a better recording of it. YouTube only has two shaky videos.

What if Mariah and Trey do a full duets album? That could be really cool. Maybe a pop album that some are asking for.

Studio session in Barcelona (89,919)

MC announced during her Barcelona concert that she was in the studio the night before. I hope she is planning a new Christmas album this fall. It makes perfect sense to capitalize on the 25th anniversary of Merry Christmas this year.
