Re: Music biz today (84,594) (84,615) by Deedre aka MiTodoChop @HBF from Canada
Generally speaking, we live in a culture that justifies the refusal to support artists. I can't tell you how many times friends, family and even people I don't know, have looked at me like I have three heads when I tell them I still buy all my music, movies books, concerts and TV shows. I still go to theater when I am able and depending on the artist I even still purchase physical copies of things. Yes, I do download stuff for free occasionally, but only things I can't go out and purchase like live performances or remixes not officially released. The term flop is overused so much, I actually cringe. You can't justify downloading material for free, and wonder why the overall quality of what gets produced has gone down or be upset when artists manipulate the system to try to circulate their material. People use the term flop so often, and yet are if there was a clearer understanding of how music actually operates today, that statement would not get used. I do miss the days where you had to wait until a physical store carried albums and singles before you could hear it or make a purchase. The instant gratification society we live in hasn't helped art or artists.

No Special K you gotta pick a better fake boyfriend than Banaka Tanaka to go up against your husband's fake girlfriend Gina Torres.

I agree. So should have Meteorite ,YDKWTD, and possibly Make It Look Good. I don't see how You're Mine won the battle.

Not calling it a flop, and I would love nothing more than to be proven wrong about them not having a proper promo but as of now she has no appearances scheduled that we know of. I was just curious as to why they are not being more aggressive with the promo. Also hi B, how are you doing?

With You is Mariah worst single. Period. I have only listened to it once. GTFO should have been the actual single. With a great video she would have had a top ten by now. What is going on? Where is the video for With You? How about abandoning all these mediocre mid tempo finger snapping snooze fests. I am sure there will be great songs on the album but all these shenanigans will create zero interest for the album. All you Mariah apologists are her worst enemies. She needs to know the truth. She is ruining her legacy. PS. GTFO should have had a video with two dancers doing a dance routine and the female knows her partner has cheated while they are competing for their last dance and they win. Then she leaves him there on stage. There that's an idea.

"Migrate", "I'm That Chick", "Side Effects", BGK, "Faded", your namesake "Ribbon" and YDKWTD not being released as proper singles will forever haunt me. Also I know a lot of people hate "Money", but that song was catchy AF and could have been a hit with the younger generation.

Special K's thirst level for Tanaka is Diamond Certified by now. Not everyone has that.

Re: I need help (84,590) (84,605) by RibbonB from USA
Mariah tweeted that they are working on the video. She knows fans are worried. Maybe she will sing With You to a backdrop of the video during the AMA show. Then perhaps have it available immediately for viewing. That could be something. And possibly a nice diversion for non live singing. Here's hoping for delightful, not debacle.

Hmmm, I wonder who that could be, lol? No, I love my husband to death. I just think Tanaka is so cute. Besides, my hubby loves to throw Gina Torres up in my face and talk about how fine he thinks she is.

What is everyone complaining about? With You has been out for six days and she's performing it tonight and thanks to the Clear Channel deal it's being played on the radio. I think we're jumping the gun by calling the song a failure after six days.

Re: Will Mariah sing live at the AMA's? (84,555) (84,601) by Andrew from UK
I agree with your post, Herr Kevyn, but I have to ask: if Mariah cannot sing GTFO and With You with her "current voice", how did she sing them in a studio a few weeks ago? Step up, step up, Mariah. Are they your vocals or your engineer's handiwork? Lol. The AMA's will reveal all.

The blame game (84,599) by Andrew from UK
This board is full of apologists, people who come up with any excuse or irrelevant reasoning even Mariah messes up, which is now all the time. It's so nauseating and pathetic to read now. Blame the music industry, blame the record label, blame social media, blame young people, blame managers, blame having anxiety issues - basically blame everyone and everything but the material for which Mariah is responsible. When things are good Mariah is a genius, when they're not everyone pick one of the above and blame, blame, blame. In no uncertain terms her songwriting and producing seem to have taken a lazy and half-assed turn into the repetitive and mundane - the same of which is becoming true of her ability to release and promote in a well-planned and effective campaign. "My fans want to hear me sing..."? She has no clue why her fans want, or, if she does, she evidently doesn't give two tiny shites. Be prepared for this era to collapse like the previous one and for a great many people to sod off and leave her to it. It will be the end of a once stellar career, resorting to the occasional repeat of the same old tour, "The Elusive Live Mic Show" and the annual Christmas regurgitation. I cannot for the life or me figure out what exactly has gone wrong in Mariah's head and like many people, whilst delusionals play the blame game and promise each other that next time will be better, I'm starting to give up on caring.

Re: Music biz today (84,594) (84,598) by Bill from the UK
This is what irks me about this roll out. YouTube views are a large proportion of a song's success and yet we haven't even got a lyric video. There is literally nothing to watch on YouTube since With You's release, so with each passing day it ebbs away out of people's minds. GTFO only has 4m views because it's no fun to watch. I've watched it a total of 2 times, and I'm a fan of Mariah's. There is a reason why Touch My Body has 170m views. It's a fantastic video. It's funny, it's re-watchable, it's tongue in cheek, MC looks great, there are several strands, it has a fun concept etc. I go back and watch it time and time and time again (but it's just a...). There is nothing re-watchable about Mariah sitting on her backside drinking wine and not doing anything. I'm praying With You's video, when it eventually gets released, has some element of a storyline to it that would encourage repeat viewings. But it will likely be beauty shots of her parading around LA in black and white. Yawn.

Maybe what Nick said is true, Mariah manages Mariah. Hey atleast it got you to start posting again. Don't lose hope. All is not lost yet. The album has not even been announced yet. Plus she apparently has "Champagne Papi" hiding under her sleeves (not) but I'd be the happiest person on earth to be proven wrong since he's too big right now to sign off on anything below his standards and his standards right now are higher than the heavens above.

I've done a 3 track playlist, GTFO, With You and Do You Think Of Me. The vocals in DYTOM complement GTFO and WY.

Re: Promo plan (84,588) (84,595) by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
If this was during the Stella era, I wouldn't even be disappointed because this is exactly what I would expect, a messy era with no proper roll out. But with her new team doing so well, and completely revamping her public image and in a time when Mariah is getting positive press, I had high expectations from this roll out. I had higher expectations when they dubbed GTFO a buzz single even before its release (as opposed to waiting for it to flop and then calling it that) and made a bold move of releasing yet another brand new song right after. Mariah may not be all that savvy promo wise but her team is bound to know that this won't go anywhere without promo. This wouldn't even work for most recent artists let alone Mariah. I mean she is working with Jay Z, who knows exactly how the business works, her new manager was trained by Benny Medina, then how is this era still like this?

Re: Music biz today (84,591) (84,594) by Edward from USA
Things are definitely different now. People can put together a playlist on YouTube and listen to their favorites for free. When you had to wait for TRL to watch videos, now they're at the click of a mouse, so views are really important. It's clearly a different scene these days. The amount of social media followers are not directly proportional to album or singles sales, it's very unpredictable. If you're very popular now, and disappear for more than a year, there's no guarantee you'll be as successful as you were before that, because you would be easily replaced. It's like, taking breaks or long breaks don't create excitement or expectation anymore, with so many options shooting from all directions, you're bound to be forgotten if you take a break. It's really sad. It's also sad the fact that no matter how great the music is, we'll always judge Mariah by the amount she sells when it's clearly unfair. I think we got used to her being a selling machine, but the scene is clearly different now.

Re: Promo plan, no lyric video (84,588) (84,593) by Lexingz from Estonia
I have no idea why they did not do lyric videos for the songs. All artists do them nowadays and this is how you get tons of views. I teach teenagers and this is basically what they watch on YouTube - lyric videos. I couldn't even get to the official With You thing on Mariah's YouTube channel where I live, I had to watch a lyric video done by someone random. All my views went to that other place.

Re: Music biz today (84,581) (84,591) by DK from USA
Wasn't saying much other than sharing an article. Overall, the music business is in crisis - the market has become too accessible and diluted and the audience attention span is quite low. The last big moments I recall were Adele (Mariah has been there, done that at her prime), Taylor Swift/Rihana (again MC has done the popularity thing at their respective ages already), Despachito which tied MC record, etc. I don't know of any artists of Mariah's caliber (and longivity) who have surprised the business scene in terms of numbers (maybe Paul McCartney's recent nr. 1 in 36 years or Barbra Streisand's last album going nr. 1? - note... no singles mentioned here). Perhaps there is hope for the album depending on who else is releasing that same week or two.
