Re: Janet at the BBMAs (82,499) (82,500)

Look, the BBMAs is mostly, if not solely based on American success and impact but we already know that. And any Janet fan knows that that was far from her best performance. There were many times that she did better on her recent tour. Plus the fact that J. Lo was honored before Celine, Cher and Janet has already proved that the award is not necessarily based on chart achievement or previously won awards. I'm just being appreciative of her contributions to music, particularly for black women in music. Whatever Beyoncé, Ciara, Tinashe, Rihanna, etc. can get away with today, they owe it to Janet. They are special in their own way, but they themselves have spoken on Ms. Jackson's influence on their work. Sure, she will never be as popular as Bey, but when you get to sell 20 million records worldwide with a self-titled album (you dropped your last name from) in 1993, that is something, considering only Whitney was probably the only other female African-American artist to do so at the time. Sure her BBMAs performance wasn't up to everyone's taste/standard, but so was Celine's a few years ago. I choose to see it as a success story of a girl who has come from the most recognized family in music who somehow was able to break through the shadows of her siblings despite her limited vocal abilities and make a name for herself other than being referred to as the Baby Jackson or Michael's sister. To me and others who think similarly, that is what we see - a triumph. Do I think Mariah deserves it more? Sure, given her pervious record-breaking successes. But I wouldn't say Janet doesn't at all. She just got it before Mariah. But I guess being first doesn't matter that much (or anymore) when J. Lo already has you beat. Mariah's time will come in due time that Billboard realizes how senseless they were at handling this award. By then, hopefully she would have fully gotten her act together to give a decent performance. But for now, I celebrate Janet's victory.

Er, not to be purposely contrary but what were you watching? I watched a woman walk around slowly like she joined Rihanna's miserable make-believe military academy, lip-sync to tuneless songs and dance a bit (albeit well). To top it off she made her speech about #metoo, which is revealed as vapid self-promoting nonsense now, and then blathered on about some religious mumbo jumbo instead of thanking people who helped to get her there, or dedicate it to somebody or, I don't know, saying something interesting. Janet Jackson never really took off in the UK (except for the songs Together Again and All For You doing well) so it is probably natural that I thought it was a pile of shit. How Mariah has not received the Icon award when dance mime artists like J-Lo and J-Jack (?) get it is beyond comprehension.

All For You was a successful album, critically and commercially. The title track was Janet's last #1.

She owned that stage and gave the best performance of the night and she looked younger than artist half her age. I still can't believe that J.Lo won the Billboard Icon Award before Janet, Madonna, Whitney, Mariah or Celine.

Janet at the BBMAs (82,494)

Icon indeed. She danced less than usual, but that's understandable since she's not 30 anymore, yet that did not make her performance any less powerful. That is how it's done. She instantly made every other performer in the show look like amateurs and their performances look like child's play. The song choices were brilliant (although I would have appreciated some What Have You Done For Me Lately, as it goes with Nasty so well). Love the interpolations of snippets from obscure album cuts (Burnitup, When We Oooo and China Love) and it amazes me that she still kills the best dance break of all time on If. Just when you think she's done, she does another unexpected throwback to the SNL performance of Throb, of all songs in her expansive catalog. That was just genius. The one thing I enjoy the most about Janet's performances (that many of today's stars fail to understand and incorporate in their performances) is that she understands how to create suspense by using short breaks - those small, quiet moments that make good use of the audience's applause, letting her savor all the adulation before she hits them back with interesting ways of resuming her performance. Her brother Michael was a master of this, too, and sadly, only Beyonce and Madonna seem to be the artists capable of pulling this trick off to maximum effect today. If there was any doubt why she was chosen this year (or at all), this ought to shut them up. It's wonderful how her ferocity as a performer contrasts with her relaxed, reserved, soft-spoken and humble demeanor. She knows exactly how to use her wisp of a voice to her advantage, and employs the best ways to compensate for those limitations. That makes her deserve this more than any black female artist out there today. Congrats, Janet. That acceptance speech was lovely, too.

Mr Martyn Hakan Hett (82,490)
by Andrew from UK
| |
|
|
It is one year ago today that Martyn Hett and others died in the bomb attack in Manchester Arena. I feel like I should write something about it. Although I have made my feelings on writing to dead people online quite clear, it seems poignant to mark the date somehow. I only met Martyn in person once - years before we spoke on this board - but such an impression was made that I remembered him in years hence. I enjoyed his spirit and his openness to other ways of thinking (except Americans correcting his English ha) and he was always a true defender. He was always lovely. I enjoyed him. I enjoyed his exuberance. I enjoyed his honesty when discussing feelings. I wish I had gone up to Manchester when he suggested it. I wish the Friday before when we spoke had not happened. I have had many people in my life pass on, but this one was unnatural. This tore something good from the Earth unexpectedly. It is not the date anniversary of his death but rather the day. It was a Monday evening. I was in a hotel and woke up to the news at 5am on the Tuesday. I still have the last message on my whatsapp: "Bro tell me you're okay?" The ticks never came. There was no blue. He never got it. Martyn happened to walk right up to the silly deluded murderous thing as he struck, before the concert end. What are the chances? Probably laughing his head off, probably entertaining strangers, Martyn stopped laughing for good. I like to think he died with a smile on his face. I like to think the last thing he heard was Mariah. I'm going to go against my own beliefs now buddy and write to you. I wish I had done things differently. I wish you were still alive. I wish you eternal rest. Till the end of time, I wish you well.
Andy.

I love Donna Summer and all the great disco classics from the 70ies too. The 80ies and the 90ies are my favorites musically. Like someone said after 2004 it all went down. There are only a very few exceptions left which are worth listening. I did enjoy reading all the lists as well, very interesting with great albums. "That's the way love goes" by Janet is RnB at it's best. I still love it. What a groove. Not like the EDM influenced heartless RnB today. Yes and J.Lo was the background dancer in the clip, 93 was a good time.

Pardon my ignorance, but I'm a bit confused lol. Is Holey rusted metal Batman the name of the group or singer? If so, I've never heard about them nor that song. Either way, I know that feeling of when I actually remember the lyrics to songs from ages ago. What's weird is that I have moments when I play a Mariah song I haven't listened to in a while, but then I have to actually try to remember those lyrics. That happened to me the other day when I was listening to my playlist and X-Girlfriend came on. Wasn't a favorite song but I still knew the words, until recently. I also noticed the ad libs at the end, that I've never noticed before.

Great list. Mid 90's is when I discovered 70's disco era. I believe it was after watching the Selena movie and hearing her versions of "Last Dance" and "On the Radio" by Donna Summer.

All great albums. I get what you mean by living in a bubble. I think that's where I'm at right now lol. I still haven't heard either Kendrick's albums but I do enjoy his music. My list is mostly albums that I had on heavy rotation, not just the albums I bought. That list would've taken longer, since I collected over 2,000 cds during the 90's lol.

Ha, I can't really take credit for this idea. Here's my list. It's confined to the 90s because, well, that's all I listen to lol (except Mariah). 1993: The year I got into chart/pop music. Defined by Mariah Carey Music Box, Dina Carroll So Close, Janet Jackson Janet, Eternal Always and Forever and Ace of Base Happy Nation (first album I ever bought). 1994: Dina & Mariah over spilled into 1994. This was the year I also discovered my other favourite Tori Amos with her Under the Pink album. 1995: Daydream and Tina Arena Don't Ask 1996: Tori Amos Boys for Pele and Michael Jackson HIStory 1997: Butterfly and Tina Arena In Deep 1998: Started delving into back catalogues at this time and found out how great the 70s were. Stevie Wonder and Joni Mitchell both released a string of great albums during that decade. 1999: Pretty much as above, continued to live in my bubble and block out any new music except Mariah ha. I'm so boring, sorry.

I forgot to mention that a long time ago (in 2015) someone on this message board recommended To Pimp a Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar so I got it because the person made it sound really good. That was on heavy rotation in my car. Then when Damn. came out last year I got that too.

We 90s junkies gotta stick together. Yeah, I've watched Throb on SNL. It was great especially towards the end. But I feel like the most epic performance of that era was her mashup of That's The Way Love Goes and If on the MTV awards, if I'm not mistaken. Stripped definitely would not have existed without janet. Even Fergie's enjoyable debut album is an offspring of janet. I even find it tons more interesting than Music Box which was also released that time.

Robert-Anthony, I went to the Angels Advocate tour and remember how strong she sounded, especially during Make It Happen. I loved her entrance on that swing and how she looked like a real life princess in her entrance. What I hated about the tour was the horrible cheap, low budget stage. I remember how strange the stage was, being built up with this incredibly ugly looking door that was an entrance to back stage front and center. I just remember how cheap it looked for someone of Mariah Carey's stature. The dancing was kind of unprofessional looking too. That is really what ruined it for me. Other than the opening dress, the rest were not the most flattering either. After seeing MC live on the Charmbraclet tour and Adventures of Mimi tour, this just lacked for me. Her live vocals were great, but the rest kind of ruined the whole experience as a whole. I loved that she did a lot of songs off of Memoirs though, especially HATE U. I don't mean to sound shallow and certainly hope I don't come off that way. I just always felt that tour didn't work for me as a complete package. But yes, her live vocals were full.
