Had Mariah neen signed by another label (109,742)
by John from USA
| |
|
|
Way back in the mid-to-late 1990s, I heard another label that was supposed to sign Mariah was looking to package her as their answer to Taylor Dayne. Glad it didn't turn out that way.

Wait, that's crazy. "Someday" is very "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" type of record. I totally get why they tried to snatch that song, it's a hit. It blows my mind how people have been trying to low ball Mariah since day one.
Brenda K. Starr tried it too, laying down 5k for her songs when she was broke, hungry and vulnerable. But MC, even in that situation, was basically like "no thanks". Honestly though, I think she's always been smart like that. Like when she was 14 and did demo vocals for a sketchy local loser band from her hometown, she basically told them, "I'll sing your stuff, but you're gonna help me record my songs, and those songs are mine. You're not involved." Who thinks like that at 14? It's insane. She was even roasting their song writing, "These are so corny, how do you not know what's on rotation on the radio?" LMAO.
Mariah's always known her worth deep inside. Always. And when she says in interviews, "Music was the one thing that made me feel special and worth something", I genuinely believe it.

You're right there was a bidding war to sign her between Warners and, as it was back then, CBS records. When the "demo tape incident" happened at the party Brenda K Starr took her to, MC was already in negotiations with WB. I've no idea what numbers each party threw in, but all Mariah ever said about it was that it was CBS allowing her to write her own songs that sealed it for her. I think they could have even offered less money and she still would have gone with them on that element alone.
Clive Davis actually tried to buy the song Someday for Whitney, it was then that Mariah realised she could indeed write a good pop song and rather than selling it (as tempting as it was for a young girl "without a penny to her name") she retained it for herself and it gave her even more determination to become an artist in her own right.

So according to the official biography the demo tape (that Tommy snatched and played in his car at the party) had four songs on it. Alone In Love, All In Your Mind, Someday, and Do You Ever Wonder which remains unreleased to this day.
After signing to CBS and working on the album, the pair wrote Vision of Love and a number of other songs that formed the demo for the debut album. With any album, a number of tracks will be recorded in a demo format for the record company to vet, approve, reject, suggest amendments etc. Once the songs from the demo sessions are decided, they will then be taken forward to be worked on for the album and go through mixing, production and mastering to create the final version.
From all I know, Vision of Love was never on the original fateful demo tape presented to Tommy, but came immediately after when the ink was still drying on the contract.

I was talking about her album rollouts in the US, not China. It's a very different music market here and for western artists they don't have big marketing campaigns or whatsoever, just maybe banners in streaming apps.

New album (109,729)
by Baby from Dreamville...Where There's No Beginning & There is No End

@Lighty. I agree with you because for the past decade, everything Mariah's touched just turned to gold - except new music. It wouldn't be so frustrating if 'Caution' wasn't such an amazing body of work. It's rivaling Butterfly as the album I play from start to finish. Her pen was on fire and I don't know what she's talking about when she complains about her vocal performances in studio or live for that era.
Also, not to nag about you always being from China, but like how did you notice her album rollouts not being as Stellar as they could be? How was she promoted over there - before and after Memoirs? @Bobby A's comment: I'm right there with you on the rollout frustrations - something feels disjointed. But I keep reminding myself that Mariah is Gamma's first true mega‑star test case. She owns her masters and publishing, so unlike a traditional label deal, Gamma has to build - and learn- in real time. That "first‑adapter" growing‑pains phase was always going to be messy. Because of that, the usual promo playbook (predictable collabs, the same talk shows, servicing the same U.S. radio formats) just won't cut it. She needs to lean into moments that only an icon of her stature gets:
• Every stage is a launchpad. When she's at Sandringham for King Charles, or any festival slot, the set list should highlight the new era - fresh single, inventive remix medleys - so casual viewers instantly link that performance to MC16.
• Serve the hungry markets. Regions that still shout for her (Asia, SA, parts of Europe) can't be bypassed. These last four type dangerous remixes were a good idea but should have come out earlier and Team Mariah needs to reach out to more International artists/DJs for future collabs and time the releases so they can actually boost the project when it's hot.
• Treat the show as content. Mariah's humor and behind‑the‑scenes banter are social‑media gold. Build quick IG/TikTok bits into the set changes instead of the usual glam‑touch‑up lull (that she doesn't even need). Fans leave with a memory and a shareable clip.
Bottom line: the catalog sells itself on streaming. Live appearances should be MC16‑first, everything else second. Gamma will fumble a bit, but if Mariah uses every mic and camera to push the new music, the campaign can still hit the highs we all know she's capable of. End rant.

Promotion (109,730)
by Baby from Dreamville...Where There's No Beginning & There is No End
| |

To Dove with love. I feel the same way about TV spots - Mariah's been meme‑ified into "the Christmas lady", and the usual talk‑show circuit only feeds that caricature. The solution isn't no promo; it's smarter, controlled promo. None of your suggestions or ideas are even anything you under the sun when it comes to Mariah as she used to be a master of promotion. So it's not about reinventing the wheel for her.
1. Curate the setting, not just the questions. Print or long‑form sit‑downs (think Vanity Fair-style hotel‑suite junkets) let her dictate lighting, pacing, and final cut - exactly how A‑list actors sell a film. When she's relaxed and not dodging shady sound‑bite hunters, the *real* Mariah shines.
2. Cut out the middle‑men - talk to us directly. Her old website voicemails and 2021 Twitter Spaces were gold because nobody filtered her. A periodic blog/vlog column - short, witty, on her own site or Substack - would reclaim the narrative, showcase that legendary pen, and shut down click‑baiters who use her name for clout.
3. Use the catalog as cinematic ammo. Outside Christmas, she's barely tapped the power of syncs. Look what "Love Actually" did for AIWFCIY. Carefully placing deep cuts or new tracks in prestige shows, A‑list rom‑coms, or buzzy K‑dramas could bond whole new audiences to her. Gamma should be able to connect her to international Netflix producers. Her music can stand alone as instrumentals. She doesn't always have to give away full tracks. I bet she has unfinished songs just languishing.
4. Cast stories in the videos. I don't know why Mariah doesn't use her videos as a platform for acting. I mean, she's paying for the whole shindig, might as well live out her inner thespian.
Bottom line: Mariah is the brand. If she controls the platform, curates the visuals, and lets the songs speak through film/TV moments, she sidesteps lazy interview shade and reminds casuals why she's still that girl.
This was a remix of Dove's post. It stands on its own but I just had to jump on it cuz it's a Summer bop

I don't think Mariah comes across well on T.V. appearances, though. (Except to the lambs.) Everyone asks her the same boring questions that we've all heard a hundred million times over the years. Or they're shady to her, like Oprah was when she interviewed her about her book when it was released. If the interviewer is shady to you, it kind of makes you look bad to the audience. IMO. Especially potential new fans who haven't heard of her. I do want to hear from her but from her own platform. Tell us what you want us to know. Make blogs for us, or vlogs.
I think a better marketing strategy would be to feature her songs on popular shows or movies. But good songs and on well written shows or movies. Mariah's songs speak for themselves. We've all experienced watching a movie or show and the song perfectly encapsulates the moment and you're bonded to that moment from then on. One example I can think of is the song Breathe Me by Sia, which was featured in the series finale of Six Feet Under.
Or have young beautiful people with storylines in her videos (with inserts of her singing in glamour poses if she wants). For example: Beauty School Dropout was supposed to be sung by Elvis so she could wear an Elvis-esque jumpsuit (like the one Britney Spears wore when she was promoting Live From Las Vegas) and recreate the video. Walking down the white stairs and there can be a beautiful young up-and-coming actress with pink hair paying Frenchie. I'm imagining the young Queen of Hearts actress from the Descendants movie.
I mean, not that exactly, but something like that.

Bobby A, Edward is 100% right. Even if she released Fantasy right now it really wouldn't do much.
Secondly I think we need to trust their process. They have a plan plus they're probably still working a few things out. I'd rather she finish everything right than announce the album prematurely and then delay it later. Plus she's not going to have a mega pop star roll out.
6 weeks ago we thought she was done, that she'd never release anything again and that there was something gravely wrong with her. A week later she gave us a brand new single and said MC16 is on its way, did numerous radio appearances and BET, performed at Capital FM, released one of her better videos in the last 15 years, rpartaked in a confused chaotic song with Barbra, Walter and Ariana and then just released a remix ep with some pretty good remixes. All in the last 5 weeks after being mostly out of action for 7 years. Cut MC and Gamma some slack. She knows what she's doing. The next single will be out soon and so will the album announcement.
No amount of promotional blitz will make it perform along the level of the current stars but the music will be there for you to enjoy regardless.

I don't know, the Type Dangerous music video is so grand. The writings on the wall says she's ready to burn everything down to the ground just to get that 20th number one. The production looks just as expensive as the latest AIWFCIY video. She's really not playing around.
And the fact that she left Roc Nation, Jay-Z's company, says something. Not sure why this detail matters but homeboy is married to someone who tends to overshadow just about everyone in the industry. Mariah probably woke up to this but one thing is clear, she is fully done letting her hits go unnoticed. I don't fault her though, A No No will always be the bop that got away.
Her move to Gamma feels just like 97, when homegirl flew all the way to Japan to meet directly with the higher-ups at Sony, the ones above Tommy, just to take control of her career and handle her label issues. It has that same lady boss energy.
I believe Mariah probably just had another rude awakening with T:D. It turns out, it's not all about marketing, you need to have a really good song. Like when "My All" came out, it was just objectively good, same feeling you got when Bieber released "Love Yourself". I know MC still got something up her sleeve. She already found a company that's willing to drop bank, which is 50% of the battle, now she just needs to deliver with an undeniably good song and a sharper marketing strategy. If she locks both in, that 20th number one isn't out of reach at all.

Bobby A, Mariah is a legacy artist, just like many others were when she was on her prime. MC16 will probably come and go like "Caution" did. No matter how many appearances she makes, it won't make much of a difference. To be fair, she was promoting consistently when TD came out and, lipped or not, she put on a great and energetic performance at Summertime Ball in the UK. Other than her legacy fans, meaning us, nobody is out there craving new music from her. Her streaming numbers are an indication of what's going on, 2.5M in a month after a 7-year hiatus. As I stated before, unless she comes out with a banger featuring a big name like Bruno Mars, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter or Taylor Swift, don't expect chart success. Always remember though that chart success does not necessarily a great album make. Enjoy the music. Winter is coming.

I like them. The one with the summer sound is my favourite, then the one with the retro 90ies vibe and the Jean Don remix sounds cool too. I didn't expect the Brazil remix.

I hadn't had time to listen to the remixes but I'm finally listening to the one with Busta Rhymes right now and I like it better than the original.

Unpopular opinions (109,718)

I wasn't aware of that, what a shame. The fact that Madonna, also signed to WB, was allowed to co-write while Mariah wasn't initially given that same allowance is absurd, almost blasphemous. I recall reading or hearing that Mariah's signing came down to a bidding war: Warner reportedly offered around $100K, and Sony countered with $300K, ultimately securing the deal. My numbers might be a little inaccurate, but it was something in that ballpark.
