Unpopular opinions (109,658)
by Edward from USA

I think "Hero" is not only about a specific element, but a combination of things, one of them being the moment in which it was released. More than the lyrics, which are as cheesy as Regina's cheese fries, it's Mariah's then persona, relevance and delivery that give it that extra punch. The song wouldn't work if it were released today with what's left of her voice and the detached from reality diva persona she's assumed since 2009. To judge and understand Hero, you really have to put it in the context of when it came out. For most, if you weren't part of that time, you probably won't get it. I was a mere 2-year toddler, but I still remember that iconic statuesque princess-like figure singing it passionately and effortlessly at the Proctor's Theatre and the guy from the audience reaching multiple eargasms. It was simply epic

Regarding only songs or albums, what are some unpopular opinions you all got? "Hero" still hasn't grown on me yet. "Thank God I Found You" was not #1 worthy and based on how many song I listen to from each album, Caution is my least favorite.

Mariah keeps trying to make "Oh Santa" happen, it's not going to happen. It's like she threw everything on it hoping something would stick.

Fantasy vs. Honey (109,651)
by Lambi from USA
| |
|
|
I agree that Fantasy vs. Dreamlover is the more formidable competition. Fantasy would probably win though, simply because it had a greater impact, she essentially mainstreamed pop and hip-hop. Arguably, this is Mariah's greatest contribution to music outside of Christmas since all the pop girlies followed the blueprint shortly after.
A good comparison would also be Dreamlover and Heartbreaker, "dreamlover, come rescue me" parallels "heartbreaker, you got the best of me". They're melodically similar.

Fantasy vs. Honey (109,640)
by Rashidi Rahim Rick from Malaysia

The real competition would be Dreamlover vs Fantasy. Both song top the Hot 100 chart for 8 weeks. Both song are equals in terms of success. Honey real contender is Heartbreaker. Though both songs top the chart too but just for a couple of weeks. Too bad Loverboy cannot sit on the table with them. Maybe if they released Loverboy Firecracker version instead.

I Stay In Love (109,650)
by Lambi from USA

I Stay In Love would honestly have been huge with better instrumentation. That repetitive, dizzying, synthesized sound ruined it. The reason why the masses ate up WBT is because of its simplicity. Just vocals, piano and perfectly crafted snares and bass.

Ok so I was scrolling TikTok and I randomly happened up a snippet of ISIL and I don't know why that song was so hated, it's actually pretty nice and very classic Mariah. I know it was put in the trash can as a WBT dupe but I think it's a decent song with a great beat. Anyways just my two cents, justice for ISIL.

Fantasy vs. Honey (109,635)

Which one was a bigger radio and sales hit? I ask the question because I feel Fantasy was because it was the first time a sample made an original song like Genius of Love popular among younger listeners in 1995. Secondly, Nostradomus on X posted today that the second single is a pop/club combination with traces of hip hop and funk. Isn't that what Fantasy was for Daydream?

It's "Fantasy" with no doubt. I remember when it came out, it was played all day on the radio. That's why I became a fan of the one and only Mariah Carey. When I switched to MTV it was the same. "Fantasy" was played every hour at least one time. There was no reason not to hear it. It was following you everywhere. 95 to 96 was the best. The 90ies in general musicwise and all the movies, the peak of human pop culture. "Honey" was also played a lot but not as much as "Fantasy". Funny side note: In 97 I went to Jurassic Park II in cinema, when I got home I heard "Honey" for the first time on the radio. After 3 seconds I knew it was Mariah. I was so surprised with this catchy and fresh sound. Mariah was back again.

The third hatin' ass ho looked like Salma Hayek to me when she was on the Mexican telenovela Teresa. But Salma Hayek doesn't seem like a hatin' ass ho, so it's probably a coincidence.
