Some random idea (111,840)
by T from USA
| |
|
|
Mariah would never sing a current popular singer's song. She also would never work with JLo. But you got me thinking what she could've done for HFIA. She could've pulled a Michael Jackson and done a double disc called "Herstory" and the first disc could've been an updated greatest hits and the second disc could've been the new album. Call the whole thing "Herstory: Here For It all" and have the album cover a statue of her, like a play on MJ's picture. Then people who would've bought it for the greatest hits would hear all the new songs. At least it would've sold double the amount in the first week and more in the long term.

Some random idea (111,824)
by Lara from Middle East

Next compilation idea could be The Covers like she did for The Rarities. Mariah has her way with covers disc 1 could be covers of recent popular songs with their author (might be expensive though to get the copyrights?), for example imagine her covering IDGF with Dua Lipa, Versace on the Floor with Bruno Mars, Please Please Please with Sabrina Carpenter etc. and disc 2 will be all the covers she already did. More wild, imagine her doing a duet with JLo, she's singing and JLo dancing. If there's any other single to get from HFIA, I'd like it to be Nothing is Impossible. It's her most relatable song. HFIA is beautiful but feels more personal. An idea for the video clip could be like a mini movie on her medical struggles that could explain why she's so stiff. And how despite it all she's still in the music industry because nothing is impossible.

The comment you made about Mariah doing a duet with Jennifer Lopez made me think about the movie What Ever Happened to Baby Jane. It's with Betty Davis and Joan Crawford. (It's free on Tubi right now.)
They were rivals in real life and they did the movie together because they knew their rivalry would garner interest in the movie and it did. There was a TV series about it with Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon called Fued. It was pretty good.
I don't know, honestly I think Jennifer Lopez and Mariah might like each other. They have a lot in common. Kind of like how Joan and Betty might have also been best friends if they hadn't been put in competition with each other.

In your feelings / Imperfect (111,838)

I don't know about y'all but "In your feelings" reminds so much of MOAIA. I used to hate that album but now I've come to like it. What always bothered me was the song "Imperfect" not making the album. It definitely deserved to be there.

I hope those who like the song will stream it as much as you can on Spotify as I do. The fact that it's currently at #5 on the Gospel chart is amazing. I hope the song reaches number one and is nominated for a Grammy. Kirk Franklin is a Gospel legend with 20 Grammys to his name which is pretty impressive. I would love for Mariah to work with him. I enjoy their Christmas song with Khalid "Fall in love at Christmas".

Covers albums (111,836)
by Dove from United States
| |
|
|
I love the covers album idea Lara. Mariah's songs are beautiful but they have the same themes for the most part. When she covers other people's songs, it's refreshing. She takes them to another place. I would prefer if she covered older songs though. In my opinion older songs were better.
(Other than Taylor Swift because she has a large fan base whom I think would listen to it out of curiosity and be introduced to her voice. Nothing from the new album though. I would choose My Tears Ricochet.)
I know it's not her musical preference but for the covers album I think she should do some standards and classics. Because they're more mainstream and a larger audience would be receptive, I think. Since she doesn't have to write them, she can save her mental power for the kind of songs she wants to do on her next album.
Also included on the covers album should be the live performances of: If Only You Knew/Somewhere Over the Rainbow, You and I, and With You I'm Born Again as bonus tracks. I like her cover of Happy Birthday to Muhammad Ali too. I know she could re-sing them, but her voice was different at those times and it's special.
The reason I said to record covers in Jamaica is so that even if they don't come up with any new original material, the trip won't be wasted. They'll have the covers of songs that have already proven to be loved by a lot of people. They're classics for a reason.
They can even do two (or even three) covers albums. One with the songs she's already covered, one with the previously unrecorded standards/classics, and one with R&B classics. Parts I, II, and III. Is it expensive to make CD's? Maybe they can just sell them digitally?
Also, she should record a lot of positive songs that make the world feel better. These are bleak times. I like a lot of songs that Gloria Estefan recorded on her standards album. I think Mariah can do some of those same songs because they have different fan bases, different voices, and they're classics anyway. A lot of people have already covered them.
Embraceable You. What a Wonderful World. Smile (Though Your Heart is Breaking). Young at Heart. This Magic Moment (or something with the word magic in because Mariah is magic). Life is But a Dream. Smoke Gets in Your Eyes. As Time Goes By. Unforgettable. Unchained Melody. I've Told Ev'ry Little Star (by Linda Scott). Beauty School Dropout. Suspicious Minds by Elvis. We Are the Champions by Queen. (I've had this running list in my head for years.)
I always wanted Mariah to cover The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face by Roberta Flack because that song reminds me of when my only child was born. But Leona Lewis already covered it and her singing voice is too similar to Mariah's for Mariah to cover it too.
There's a song by Kari Jobe called Holy Spirit. I really love it. It was my wedding song with my second husband. (My second marriage ended amicably and that's still one of my favorite songs.) It's a duet with her husband. She could sing that one with Trey.
These are just my own personal ideas, of course. It's fun to dream.

Here for it all (111,835)
by Giovanni from USA

Is a solid and cohesive album by MC. I'm glad she recorded it and believe she tried her best to promote it. I'm a little disappointed by the sales but at this point Mariah has nothing to prove, is past her prime and I think she's going to keep recording regardless which is fine with me. I can't wait for the next album and I heard she won't wait too long to release it. I think going 7 years without any new music was definitely too long and a mistake. My favorite songs are "Jesus I do", "In your feelings", "Nothing is impossible" and "Here for it all". One thing this album shows is that Mariah still has her pen game and I can't wait for more new songs in the future. I'm very proud of her for still showing us that she's still one of the best music artists and song writers of our time.

Discography needs to be introduced to potential new fans (111,833)
by Dove from United States

I made a playlist for two of my friends who are in their 20's to introduce them to Mariah. They said they were surprised she had so many good songs because they had only heard her big hits.
One of them had a long road trip and listened to my whole playlist. She reported back that she liked all of the songs on it except for Don't Stop (Funkin' 4 Jamaica). I can see why, but I still added it because I like it.
Her songs just need to be heard. The songs speak for themselves.

I love how Type: Dangerous sounds but I don't love the lyrics. It's not that I have a problem with the lyrics per se. I just don't think she should be blasting her exes on the radio at the age we're at. It rubs me the wrong way.
I would have no problem if those lyrics were a deep cut on the album. That's real. It's relatable. Tommy Mottola and Nick Cannon come off as super likable in interviews and they don't say blatantly negative things about her, ever.
Tommy reminds me of my first ex-husband. Italian and controlling. But I obviously did like him at times, otherwise I wouldn't have married him. Mariah probably feels the same way about Tommy. She's an artist and our feelings are valid. I don't think lyrically that was the best choice for the first big single after being gone for seven years.
I think that's why Infinity rubbed people the wrong way too. People like Nick and probably blamed her for the break up. I like Infinity a lot. I like how the music builds and then releases. Like when we're grieving something. It builds up and then releases only to build back up again. Until we finally do let it go for good.

I think Type Dangerous was a great way to launch the era, but as soon as it hit #95 on Billboard I think they should've pivoted to song #2 with Anderson. That way he could've performed with her on the VMA's. With an exciting music video it would've been a nice summer moment. Once you have all eyes on her you release the third song a week before the album comes out which would be IYF. And the forth and last single would've been HFIA in early November along with "it's time".

"Sugar Sweet" was a solid second single choice. "Play This Song", on the other hand, is flat, it doesn't go anywhere, and there's no real hook or memorable moment. The chemistry between Mariah and Anderson just isn't there. "Leave the Door Open" worked because Bruno and Anderson balanced each other. Anderson's subdued but effective vocals start the song while Bruno's vocals brought the song to life. That spark is completely missing on "Play This Song".
When we were talking about a possible collabo with Bruno Mars, I said Bobby that in case, Mariah would have to vocally bring it to make it work. "In Your Feelings" and "Nothing's Impossible" would've made much stronger third single choices.

I have to say that I am super disappointed in the launch and performance of the album. I didn't expect a massive single or huge sales like Taylor Swift or Beyonce, but I think a Top 40 single like "#Beautiful" was definitely a realistic goal. I agree with T's post. "Type Dangerous" was the right launch single - it outperformed all of the singles released from "Caution" and was her first non-Holiday solo Hot 100 appearance in a decade (last one was "Infinity" in 2015). It was positioned in much the same way that "It's Like That" was in 2005 to drum up buzz for "The Emancipation of Mimi".
They should have pivoted to "Play This Song" as the second single rather than "Sugar Sweet." A duet with Anderson .Paak had a much better chance of taking off on the charts after the momentum built by TD.
I definitely called this months ago when I wrote that the album release was too close to the Holiday season. The album seemed ready to go back in June, so they could have released it in July/August. But they waited too long and made the wrong single choices and now HFIA is quickly being memory holed by the overseas Mimi anniversary tour engagements and Mariah's annual Christmas blitz.
I love the album, and I am proud that Mariah put out something so great. But it's frustrating to wait seven years and then have the album perform so poorly. Tina Turner, Cher, Madonna, and Aretha Franklin were all still having Top 40 hits into their 50s, and I just felt that Mariah had at least one more non-Holiday midsized or big hit in the cards.

I've been thinking about it and I honestly don't care anymore if Mariah charts or doesn't chart again. I think I used to care more when Caution came out. If this is her last album, it's a good way to go out. If she releases another album, of course I'll buy it. I think she gave her best with performances and appearances, even if it didn't seem like it. I feel like something is going on with her, and even though I'd like to know, she doesn't owe us that. I just hope she does whatever she needs to do that's best for her. I just want her to take care of herself.

Madonna's Bed Time Stories new song (111,827)
by Bobby A from United States
| |

I really was trying to say how expansive Bedtime Stories anniversary celebration is just like MC did for TEOM. I forgot to mention that part. It is a part of her deal with Warner Bros to bring all of her post-2008 albums under one label. I wonder, would Sony Legacy be willing to do that for MC for her four Def Jam albums, release Right To Dream on vinyl and her one Epic album under one label. It would also probably help her secure a deal with Sony Legacy to release Somebody's Ugly Daughter sooner rather than later. I kind of feel like Sony Legacy is not willing to release SUG. It just seems like they are not on board with the idea. It would be the perfect Record Store Day release.

Retrospective moments (111,820)
by Lambi from USA

Morgan Wallen only did SNL, one festival, a couple of radio interviews, and a few YouTube acoustic sessions. He still pulled 493,000 units in his debut week. The timing of his tour helped, but the rollout was minimal. But do you know how much more Mariah did?
• BET, iHeartRadio, the VMAs. • Ridiculous amount of podcast and radio interviews. • A jam-packed week of TV appearances close to release date. • In-store events, magazine covers. • Huge international festivals. • An Apple Music special. • A high-budget video for T:D. • Stripped versions of the album's songs. • Collaboration with other artists. • Three singles released.
This is why we can confidently say her numbers are indeed pathetic. I don't fault Bobby A. for assuming something is suspicious. It's actually pretty valid.
People keep saying, "Oh, she doesn't have to chart. Let's just enjoy it." But that's not what she said. Mariah made it clear, this was her goal. To finish strong. Had she not prefaced it like that, maybe the numbers wouldn't sting so much. She obviously didn't join a 400 million dollar company for a $39k debut. For the first time in a while, she was genuinely fired up about her career. She was locked in on pursuing a tangible goal.
Part of me believes there's some truth in Bobby A's claim (deep in my dive right now), but another part of me believes the public has actually just checked out on her. The big promotional opportunities actually just backfired. People saw the VMAs. They saw how stiff, uninterested and lazy she was. Why in the world would anyone spend money on that? The free market will blatantly always tell you.
The caricature of Mariah, the "lip-syncing phony" seems to have won. On one hand, I feel bad, but on another hand, I hope this truly wakes her up. She can post these fleeting weekly Billboard numbers to soften the blow, but we know she's embarrassed. And to be fair, who wouldn't be?
Nonetheless, I am grateful Mariah truly doesn't let go. "They chase me down but I'm still rolling, something in me cannot be stolen, I will not break, I won't be broken, it's deep, can't you see?" I believe these are the words that echo in her mind as she journeyed this album. No groundbreaking single, but very solid songs. Nothing Is Impossible and Here For It All are on repeat. A good body of work indeed. And I believe she will get that 20th number one. This flop will just make her go harder. She's fully lost her ability to perform on stage, but the creativity is still as strong as ever. And it's really her creativity that always lands her at #1.

I guess now all we have to look forward to is her annual "It's time" video. HFIA is probably done on the charts. HFIA just had too much of a waste hype period (AI term from an answer about why labels frown about social media song drops by artists) from two weeks after SS was released to the album released date. The waste hype period was too long without a Top 10 single like Obsessed. A third single like Obsessed ft. Bruno Mars is what HFIA needed after SS was released. Oh well, I feel MC17 won't take seven years to be released since MC knows now that her music still intrigues people.

I agree. Mariah did her homework but didn't score. Is there really a conspiracy? Or is it because she's not relatable anymore? We all get she's a diva and she's fully on board with this but that might be the reason people get away. You cannot relate easily to her songs anymore. You cannot relate to her daily attitude. When was the last time you saw her in a lay down ensemble? It;s always gowns, diamonds and heels. And she doesn't move comfortably in them. Males you think why keep doing it? And in one of her recent appearances the host ask her about Crocs, to which she answers "yey" to which I was completely surprised. There was a lot of damage done from Stella's era showing her luxurious lifestyle, I think people cannot connect to her anymore and i.e. to her music.

November 28th is the day the Untold Chapter EP with demos, alternate mixes and remixes will be released along with the original album on a 2CD set and other vinyl variants. Why do I think Madonna is following how MC is releasing her anniversary albums? This is the Madonna album to have in your vinyl collection.

Madonna's Bed Time Stories new song (111,813)
by T from USA

Madge just put out an unreleased song from the Bed Time Stories era that was funnily enough produced by Dallas Austin. She must be reading this board. So I went on his Instagram and he's busy producing for a lot of new up and comers and the music sounds good.

Maybe if they did a more interesting video, but yeah, it is just [too] common.

Play This Song (111,816)

The song is flat, it lacks and some vocal moment. "Leave The Door Open" is on different level. I'm surprised they chose that as a single.

It's just not a very well-written song, not catchy. Most people will wonder where the chorus is upon first listen. Takes a few more listens to grow on you.

Play This Song (111,814)

It is interesting that Play This Song didn't take off on Urban AC radio. I wonder is it because the sound is too retro and similar to Leave The Door Open by Silk Sonic and a boring video. We have been there and done that already in the past five years. Anyone, NBC will repeat MC's and Anderson's Tonight Show performance this coming Thursday.
