Happy birthday, Ed. And congrats on getting more well-wishes on your bday than the person the board is about. Too soon?

I miss albums (102,479)
by Xavier mariohmix from Spain
| |
|
|
Definitively. I remember at that time my CD player wasn't working. So, after buying the album, I had it at home for 3 days until I was able to get to a friend's home and burn a cassette tape. Imagine my frustration, but, at the same time, the anticipation created up to when I finally got to listen to it.
That process (waiting for the day of the release, going to the store, coming back home, playing the CD over and over) doesn't happen anymore and I do miss it too.

I totally agree with you. Having an album, a theme, the lyrics on a carefully crafted CD insert was simply a pleasant journey. I remember rushing home with the Butterfly CD still unopened in in my hands. The anticipation felt like having butterflies in my stomach, such a surreal moment, at least for me. Since I hadn't listened to anything other than the "Honey Maxi Single", I almost died when "Butterfly" kicked. I miss those days.

Butterfly will always be my favorite experience. Music Box and Daydream stole me from Whitney to Mariah. Oh don't get me wrong. Whitney will always be the better vocalist. Just not the better voice. But even still, what I got from MC was the personal experience. The alienation of Looking In, Close My Eyes and Outside. I feel as though Celine and Whitney never got that personal at the time. Madonna and Janet did but they didn't have the voices. MC was the balance. And when I listen to the lyrics of Butterfly, My All and Breakdown, there will never ever be another album experience like Butterfly.

Edward, I get your single idea but it breaks my heart. I feel like an album wouldn't benefit her in this current music industry. But how I miss the anticipation. I miss it being a project. Having a theme. I know it's for the nostalgia but remember waiting outside of Sam Goody or Tower Records? Remember struggling to get that plastic tape off the top of the CD? We don't get liner notes and pictures anymore. It's just sad. Imagine if movies weren't a thing and you just got a scene at a time. Imagine if a baseball game was one inning and everyone went home. I feel like an album is like a novel. A page is special but you need the entire story.

So true, that's why I still buy cd's (real albums). I need something I can touch, look at the pictures, read a little text with lyrics. I also love to collect albums. A playlist or stream can never replace it. A new album with a theme, I would love that too.

I wish MC would jump on the EP trend that is happening right now. Newer artists like Coco Jones, Summer Walker, and Eric Bellinger are doing it and having great success. It would be perfect for MC to release a 7-track EP and have enormous success with it. Take for example, Coco Jones who has never released a "full album" in her career. Last year, she released her first major label EP on Def Jam Records. She is having enormous success with the deluxe edition of her EP with an additional 3 extra tracks. Her single, ICU is gaining radio airplay because of her performances on TV. She even made it onto a track on Babyface's Girls Night Out album. I wish MC would release an EP and just promote the heck out it on TV and see what happens.

I think Mariah should drop a single unannounced with a hot popular act. Putting music out at a reasonably time is what keeps the fanbase going. Maybe not every two year, but at least every three year. I guess we all need a new project ASAP.

1) Many are doing a great job proving my original point, which was that folks have a lot of time to post negative things about her, before, during and immediately after her anniversary, but no time to wish her the best on her anniversary. That tells me all I need to know about a lot of folks around here. I'm not talking about people who had other stuff to do that week, but folks who were posting on the board a lot during the days before, during and after but had no well wishes.
2) Re: athletes, I won't indulge the rabbit hole this has gone down. I will ask, which singers at this stage of their career have #1 hits and put out quality albums all the time? Name names. Who is this fictitious model of what a singer at this stage should be doing that folks hold her to? How many have had #1 hits in 4 decades?
3) You say she's focused on more things than just music like that's a bad thing. I sure hope she is, she's building and supporting a family, not spending 24/7 every day putting an album out every year, and has certainly earned the right to explore many different areas of her life and interests.

While we are here bashing Mariah as a singer, as an artist and as everything else why don't we talk about how irrelevant we are as a fanbase? Some self reflection is also needed. Some people here are so proud of following MC since day one while we sit and talk at a freaking messageboard. In a social media era this is like we send each other pigeons with messages.

It's not absurd, go running and tell your ex that. While you can find a few athletes here and there who have cheated, many of them have been found out sooner or later, they've been ridiculed and many of them have been stripped of their "accolades", but that's not the majority, that's why there's a system in place for that. When a singer cheats here and there by lipping, most people don't care as long as you still can sound decent or justify the money you're getting by putting on a good show. Fans shouldn't be taken advantage of just because they're loving fans, they should be respected just the same way the celebrities in question are respected by then.
According to your fine logic, just because Mariah has gotten lazy and doesn't give an f nowadays, we should just sit and take it lying down just because she once gave us some great music. No, no and no. She's known for not even doing like doing her own sound check, wtf.
Any person who have gotten to a point where they know they can't do their job decently, should retire with dignity, period. But I think it's not that Mariah can't do her job decently, I think that she doesn't want to put in the work to get that outcome. Her pretty caked up face won't just cut it. At least not for me.
