I truly do not think she snubbed her. I think we would like Beyoncé to name drop MC, But I think it was meant to be a moment to pay homage to [Vogue] and black quare ballroom culture. MC simple does not fit into that theme.

Perhaps they checked in with Mariah, and it was a firm no from Mariah. Mariah can be very protective of her brand, and legacy, and having her name mentioned over a sample of Vogue is probably not in tune with what she would want. Other than that I can't figure it out tbh. And in all honesty, I doubt they would have checked with all the people they name dropped, so it's probably something else. Either way, Mariah is an absolute legend, and a far better songwriter than Beyoncé or Madonna, so I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. Also, I use the term songwriter in the loosest sense of the word when referring to Beyoncé.

Aside from the [obvious] Mariah snub, she also didn't mention Mary J., Tina Turner, Patti LaBelle, her co-star and one of only 17 EGOT winners ever, JHug or Donna summer (even with so much disco flavour on some of the tracks).

I know it's a remix with Madonna's song and all, but if you think anyone is going to tell Beyonce who she can or cannot name-drop...

Is something going on? (100,917)

As someone who struggles with my weight, I have to wonder what's going on with MC. She looks terrible in that black dress. And she was pretty big in the Hampton's picture. Oprah once said something that rings true for me and probably MC: You can tell by my size whether or not things are going great in my life.

I think it's as simple as Madonna not liking Mariah, and like you said Madonna saying Mariah can't be mentioned. Like Alicia [Keys] gets a shout out, but not Mariah. Aretha, Mariah, it would have flowed like butter to add Mariah in there. Also, I think it's fascinating that Beyoncé used this [Vogue] sample (it's a sample even though they are calling it a feature, the vocals aren't new). When Madonna is the queen of cultural appropriation, starting with when she stole the vogue concept from the underground ballroom community.

Well, like most people said on this board last week, Beyonce doesn't write her own songs, she has people write them for her and she changes a word or 2 lol.

Maybe it was Madonna who stipulated "don't mention Mariah if you're going to use my song". Just a theory. I hope perhaps Bey has something planned with Mariah. I like Renaissance, I think it's great if you like Ballroom House.

Article about Honey (100,913)

It's so true, it's really as sweet as it was 25 years later. It's one of her best up-tempos right after Fantasy. It still sounds so fresh, soulful. Mariah at her best. Plus one of the best videos ever. I just love the Bond girl idea. Honey is just phenomenal. Perfect sample, perfect remixes. I miss that Mariah. (Fun, independent and carefree.) Yes she was so young, I know. I will always remember when the song was played on the radio 97, after 3 seconds I knew it was Mariah with the new song. And the video was everywhere. Sweet memories of the late summer 97.

Yeah. I know Beyoncé is entitled to namedrop whoever she considers in her new song, but I feel it's a little unfair that she is paying homage to the most famous razialiced women in music history without naming Mariah Carey. She included some big legendary names like Betty Davis (the funk icon), Rosetta Tharpe, Sade, Whitney, Janet, Anita Baker and a long etcetera. She even names Nicki Minaj and RiRi (Rihanna), which makes Mariah's absence even more striking. Beyoncé once said that "Vision of love" was one of the reasons why she started singing. She also said that Maria's voice comes from God. MC worked with Jay Z long before he became worldwide known in songs like Heartbreaker or You Got Me. Destiny's Child were big fans of Mariah, and you could notice her influence in their way of singing and phrasing, the melismatic singing that Mariah developed as a trademark during the 90's and that later will use Christina Aguilera, Ariana Grande, etc. Maria's influence on the female singers that came after her is undeniable, but few credit her nowadays.

Right. I don't think Mariah and Beyonce are friends as much as some of us think the two are. Maybe Jay Z wanted a Mariah and Beyonce duet 2020 and MC said no and that's why she left RocNation.

Bey snubs Mariah (100,907)
by Norman from USA

Beyonce released a remix of Break My Soul (Queen Remix) with Madonna. It mixes BMS with Madonna's Vogue. If you're familiar with Vogue, you know there's a part where Madonna name checks Hollywood icons like Marilyn Monroe, Dietrich and DiMaggio. Well, in this remix Beyonce starts the name check with "Queen Mother Madonna, Aaliyah." And then proceeds to name-check various other female entertainers (checks Grace Jones twice) but omits Mariah. Doja Cat gets in the mix, but no Mimi. I thought it was interesting.

I think of her performance of Petals at the Rosie O'Donnell show in 2000. At the end of Petals where she sings, "I miss you Valentine (Tommy), I really loved you," she shook the microphone a bit with her head nodding as well. I think MC did love him with Butterfly being the words she wished he had said to her. I think she wanted the marriage to work but left when she had nothing more to give.

Wasn't it like September 12, 2020 that MC announced The Rairites? This is the date that I wrote down in my Mariah book. We should have something announced in September. I just hope not another Christmas song this year. I need some new MC vinyl in my collection.

By the Daydream era, Mariah lived with Tommy at Sing Sing, so I doubt she could've accomplished that. She could've sneaked out for a couple of hours at best, but with the tabs he kept on her, it's highly unlikely. Remember when Mariah snaked out with Da Brad and Tommy's ass almost cracked? I think it all happened when they had separated. In Mariah's mind there was a possibility of them getting back together, that's why she wrote Butterfly, I think it's not that she didn't love him, it's that he was suffocating her.

Libra, I've always wondered who Memoirs is about. E=MC2 was such a fun happy record, then she married Nick and one year later does a breakup album. I'm guessing some of the vocal cries are brought on by her recent miscarriage at the time, but to do such an amazingly sad and angry album when she was a newlywed always seemed out of step with her personal life.

It was in regard to "After Tonight", yes. And I do group it into a trilogy as well. Oddly enough, I thought that about "Underneath The Stars" also - that maybe they actually met in '95!

I Only Wanted I group with the trilogy of My All, After Tonight and that. Luis was meant to duet with MC on After Tonight, but it wasn't in his key, or their voices didn't gel together, so it didn't happen. Was that what you were thinking of?
As for songs about Derek. I agree Fourth of July may be likely, but as this is a continuation of Underneath the Stars, it fans the flames of my theory that Mariah and Derek were having an affair as far back as 1995. With that lens, he could also have been just a "sweet, sweet fantasy baby", and perhaps she couldn't breathe and fell deep when she first saw him? Who knows.

It's funny you say you wish Mariah covered "The Lonely Talking Again", because I thought it was actually a Mariah Carey song back in the day before the internet, Google, YouTube etc. A funny story is I was actually in the music section of Circuit City combing through the Mariah cds (this had to be post Butterfly because that's when I really started my collection) and found the single for Hero then saw "Everything Fades Away" as the B-side. Since I couldn't sample the song and didn't even know the actual title of the Whitney song, I convinced myself that "Everything Fades Away" had to "The Lonely Talking Again"; I even sung the title of EFA in the same melody as the Whitney song (which I barely knew any lyrics to just the melody for the hook) to solidify it. So I promptly purchased the single and of course it wasn't the song I thought it was. However it was my first introduction to "Everything Fades Away" which I instantly loved and was blown away by.
To answer your question: I would've loved to hear Whitney sing "Vision of Love" in her prime and Mariah sing "The Lonely Talking Again" or "Where You Are".

There's a clip with Whitney singing a line from "Vision of Love" and I always wanted to hear more. Funny enough she sings it in the original key, impromptu. They have two different styles of singing and different voice types. Whitney always sang in her comfortable range for the most part, but Mariah always experimented a lot and sings more outside her range. It would've been truly awesome to experience them both cover each other. The closest we have of them singing the same song is "O Holy Night". Whitney : "Vision of Love", "Fly Like a Bird" and "Love Takes Time". Mariah: "For the Love of You", "You Give Good Love", "Fine" (total bop), "How will I know".

Lol. Diane warren has always been so outspoken and real. I went through the credits for the Kelis song that caused so much drama and there were 16 people credited and I was like "Is this even possible?" I thought that was overkill, but 26? Haha. Now that's just messy. I haven't listened to the new record and I don't even intend to. Never really connected with Beyonce nor her music at all.
