Now that's Mariah. She is exactly the same there as she was in her early days. That's the Mariah she needs to reconnect with.

Well put Jamie. She hit that balance when she married Nick. I've posted this before, but this is one of my most favourite Mariah interviews. She seemed in such a good place, was relatable, down to earth and friendly, funny, engaged, looked great and just seemed very self assured but also unassuming. Exactly where a singer of her accolades should be.

I agree Bill, whilst I've come to accept the MC of present I've always wondered what happened to that soulful singer of the early days. She didn't even need to try and be cool she just was. I get Sony made her dress certain ways but they can't control her personality.
Even in the Butterfly era she was still herself just a bit more confident but that worked too. Something serious happened around the time before and after her breakdown as like you say it's like it's a completely different person.
I did think she got close to being herself again during Emancipation and E=MC2 but after that I feel something went wrong again. I know she has her mental health struggles but surely she must look at those early days and think she's so disconnected from that person.
I'm not expecting her to have curly hair tied up and skipping around a field like in Dreamlover again but I think she needs to reconnect with her earlier self and loose the whole diva act, it hasn't been working for sometime now so instead of letting go of her inner child I think she should think about letting go of this persona she's created. Loose the divaness, look good but don't get hung up about it and just connect with people better.
Dare I say it but Jennifer Lopez is glam looks great but when she speaks to interviewers she's so natural and down to earth you don't say where's the Jennifer from on the 6 because it's the same person.
It's easy for us to comment I guess we don't really know Mariah but I think deep down we all know she's capable of better and like I said Sony may have said she could say certain things back then but her personality was all hers and that must be still in there somewhere.

"Those lyrics and productions must improve dramatically." I hope so too. I don't expect 90ies quality as well, luckily we can listen to those magic songs over and over again. But real musicians would make a big difference indeed. Not only a "cool" producer. One can dream.

The airiness her whistle had hear was amazingly beautiful. Her whistle now doesn't sound like that at all.

My dear Robert-Anthony, it doesn't have anything to do with Walter. Mariah's natural voice, accompanied by a very skilled pen game, was what set her apart from the rest. The whistle notes were used to adorn some songs here and there. Different from many other artists that could whistle, Mariah didn't need the whistle to create a beautiful song because her natural voice alone was simply phenomenal. As her voice started to deteriorate, the whistle trick started being used more and more. Her constant strained whispering is not pleasant to the ear anymore, at least not to mine, and her whistle alone just don't cut it. Mariah put quality albums out every year during the 90's, with left over songs that could've been in any album not as fillers, yet she has nearly two years of no touring, resting her voice, and we cannot get one decent song from her. I think it's time for her to collaborate with real musicians. Let's say "One Child", to me is a song beautifully written and sung, but whom did she collaborate with, with Broadway composer Marc Shaiman. This man wasn't probably in the booth with Mariah and her posse clowning around smoking weed. "Almost Home" is a song anybody could swear she wrote when she had very little input on it, but it was very well received and her vocals were comparable to any of her 90's stuff. I know she cannot get her voice back and nobody is expecting that, but dear, those lyrics and productions must improve dramatically.

Funny, I was on my way to share this as well. All we had previously was a tiny snippet of MC and the backing singers on the stairwell from The First Vision video, so hearing this, with those gorgeous whistles and the agile and full-bodied 1990 vocals, is such a joy. CBPCH 2021 version is sung by a completely different person it seems, doesn't it?

Have you heard this? I think it's just a rehearsal by Mariah and her fabulous background singers at that time. Sounds like year 90. I love it. All her background singers were so great too. They sounded more natural and soulful than Khalil on the new Christmas song.

You guys are looking at "The Magic Continues" wrong. Think of it as a promo for FILAC. That's one hell of a platform to promote a new song, don't you think? And don't be surprised if Mariah shows up every year on Apple+ or an equivalent to promote a new song. Star power. BPCH wasn't bad at all with the band and production. Ya'll need to stop obsessing over her tone. Happy holidays everyone!

Me thinking again (99,046)
by Bobby A from United States

Sitting here thinking why MC has to put whistle notes in every dog gone song. Is it a true observation to say that when she collaborated with Walter A. that his mellow and melodic chords kept her from even trying to come with song parts to fit in some whistle notes. Maybe too many whistle notes in every recording session has ruined her voice than anything. Have many of you remember Debelah Morgan? She knew when to put in whistle notes in the right song. MC overcompensates her ability to whistle. Just my thoughts today. I guess no live Christmas program this season. Lol.

Just watched (99,045)

Ok I've just watch the magic continues. Whilst I liked it I can't help think what was the point with 2 songs. The interview was pointless really. I'd love to see a dressed down Mariah doing an interview, she's so wooden I'd like to see if there's any of the early Mariah still in there, the one that was quirky in interviews and relaxed.

Well, we can say one thing about this Christmas season. MC is crushing Spotify numbers with BPCH, AIWFCIY, and FILAC. FILAC has a good chance to make the Urban Top 20 in two weeks with the increased radio spins and Target Exclusive CD sales. I believe she is going to deliver some special gifts in 2022.

I don't think it's too bad, it's by no means perfect, her voice is changed, but she's working with what she has now. We can't expect her to be perfect like she was back in the day. I'm just grateful she's still around and able to do these prime time shows for us.

This was recorded months ago, not in the winter (as winter doesn’t officially begin until December 21st). Plus this is all done in LA anyway. For example, FILAC was done in May/June of this past year. I actually think her true winter performances are better, like the Beacon shows.

No she didn't get the message with Caution because it didn't become the hit it could've been. She even says she didn't like the process of making it (after the fact). Remember, Mariah always goes back to the times in her life when she was most successful and tries to recreate those sounds. That always puts her in a TEOM/EMC2 state of mind. If Caution was a runaway success then I truly believe she would continue down that road, now I'm afraid she doesn't know it. I too hope she works with producers she's never worked with, particularly Max Matin.

In comparison though, the Grammy performance is incredible to this mess. We all criticised it at the time but "I'd give my all" to have her sounding like that again.

There is something going on with her voice in the fall/winter compared to the spring/summer. Her voice had such clarity and resonance on Somewhat Loved. Now we get a nasal forced vocal styling. It has to be the change in the weather. BPCH sounds really bad. I can't watch it again just like when she performed BPCH on the very first Grammy nominations primetime special. She sounded really hoarse and dry during that performance. I hope she rebounds for the new studio sessions next year.

I think the surprise could be the masterclass she is doing in 2022. She is doing a masterclass on how to use your voice to express yourself through music. She hasn't officially announced it but masterclass announced a few upcoming classes and she was one of them.

Visually speaking I loved the production. I was surprised that she changed up a few vocals on FILAC. I thought she was going to mime to the studio version. I like the new vocals to BPCH. I'll take full voice mid range Mariah vocals over whispery vocals anyday. I like the vocal choices she made and replaced high bells with high falsetto notes or whistles. Two small critiques. This was too short. It was almost like what is the point? She could have added a couple of other songs she didn't sing in the previous special to continue to push other Christmas songs especially the ones she wrote. She's been promoting that her voice is in the best condition it's been in a long time, but anytime she belts high on the new BPCH vocals, it sounds digitally altered and not in a good way. I hope she can really rest and stay away from vices that dissipates the voice. I need full voiced vocals on the next album.
