Bill, my last thing on this and probably the last word from Celine and that night. Here is Celine talking about that moment and singing with the queen. That's probably how she and Mimi would talk about it together if they were reminiscing.

Or maybe she's jealous of Celine because unlike Mariah, Celine took care of her voice, and now regrets not doing the same thing.

Rainbow EPs and recap (96,064)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
Hey all, my weekly feature returns, I hope you are excited. An impressive showing from the Rainbow EPs, with only some (very) minor omissions.
Before we begin, let's take a moment to admire the cover art. I think the Rainbow era had some of the best photographs and picture sleeves of any Mariah era. I'm especially glad the pink sleeve (the "Valentines EP" sleeve) was chosen for Can't Take That Away, instead of the alternative cover of Mariah in the garden. I'm also very glad Thank God I Found You opted for the blue sleeve with the white top, rather than the braided hair/black hat affair. Against All Odds' cover is simply stunning.
Most of us will be aware that Heartbreaker, Thank God I Found You and Can't Take That Away already had EPs available on most streaming platforms, albeit not as complete as the ones we have just been gifted. I hope these will soon be retired so as not to confuse people, as there is no need for them now.
Heartbreaker was missing two edits. Although billed on many releases as the "Album Version", most single releases contained, in fact, a shortened (4:18) version, which shortened the breaks between the verses and removed one of the closing choruses. There was also a promotional only edit of the "Ain't No Fun" remix, which removed the first 15 or so seconds and opened with a fade-in. I was pleased to see the live "Love Hangover" version included, and of course, the "If You Should Ever Be Lonely" club mixes are some of her best.
Thank God I Found You also saw an edit not included - the "Make It Last Remix Edit w/o Rap". No big deal as we were treated to the gorgeous Make It Last Instrumental and my favourite one, the StarGate Radio Edit.
Can't Take That Away was complete - hooray.
Against All Odds, for all intents and purposes, was also complete as the only remixes missing were the "Westlife Only" version (and who wants to hear that), and a Backing Track and Instrumental from promotional releases. Great to see the Pound Boys remixes available, as they are perfect for the stair master lol. The Deep Dub was previously only available on promotional releases, so great to have this streaming.
Of course, shall we have a moment of silence of Crybaby. It was a long shot that the promotional Radio Edit would appear anywhere. Much like most tracks that only had a Radio Edit commissioned, it has not appeared. A real shame as this was only available on a very hard to find (and hard to afford) promo CD from the US.
In terms of my missing remixes log, I have adapted it slightly. I have, for now, removed the Merry Christmas remixes as I am hopeful these will appear nearer the time. I have also separated out the list into genuine missed remixes, vs. Edits & Instrumentals. When divided in this way, not that many true remixes have been missed.
As a reminder for the below, a [P] designates a promotional only remix, and an asterisk (*) indicates a remix previously only available on a vinyl release.
Missed Remixes Log Medley (Prisoner/All In Your Mind/Someday) Endless Love (Mariah Only) Endless Love (Luther Only) Fantasy (Puffy's Mix) Always Be My Baby (Reggae Soul Mix) Always Be My Baby (Reggae Soul Dub) Always Be My Baby (Reggae Soul Acapella)* Butterfly (Sambatterfly) [P] Butterfly (TV Track) [P] Butterfly (TV Track Short) [P] My All (Full Crew Main Mix) My All (Full Crew Main Mix Without Rap)* [P] When You Believe (TV Track) Against All Odds (Westlife Only)
Missed Remixes Log - Edits & Instrumentals I Don’t Wanna Cry (Radio Edit) [P] Can’t Let Go (Edit) Can’t Let Go (Edit - No Intro) [P] Make It Happen (Extended Version - Radio Edit) [P] Endless Love (Instrumental) Honey (Smooth Version No Intro) [P] My All (Full Crew Main Mix Instrumental)* [P] Sweetheart (The Story Instrumental) Sweetheart (Instrumental) [P] When You Believe (Instrumental) I Still Believe (Damizza Remix Instrumental)* I Still Believe (Stevie J. Remix Instrumental)* I Still Believe (Damizza Remix Edit) I Still Believe (Stevie J. This is very dramatic, Randy, but I hope you will still be a part of this community. I have many times wondered if my love for Mariah borders to obsession, I think of her and her career more often than I would like. I find myself thinking of Mariah before I go to sleep, and sometimes I wake up to think about Mariah. I think I'm the only person I know that spend this much time thinking about the music star I adore.
My point is, maybe you have had a bit of an unhealthy relationship with Mariah, it seems like you have invested so much, and now you feel let down. But remember, Mariah is almost a fictional person, a woman most of us in this board have adored throughout our lives, but how many of us actually know her? Nobody.
I think you have to let go of the notion Mariah Carey, and more think of her as a person you never knew. Keep on adoring her 90's persona, I sure do the same, and I also wish for some brief moments that she will yet again turn into Daydream-Mariah. But she will never do.
I beg you Randy, rethink what you have decided, because I think it is rooted in too much investment in a person that never have known you, but you have always thought you have known them. It's hurtful, but it is the truth.
I sure will keep on routing for Mariah, even though I also miss the 90's unflawless Mariah. Hey, don't we all mussing being young?

I know it well, the testimony part of the song. The event and the finale was legendary and it's cool Mariah told her perspective. I just posted Carole King and Randy Jackson talking about the moment. I don't even think Mimi was dissing Celine, although I was. She just gave her take on it. Aretha is very important to Mariah and she has said that many times, which is why the stories about their moments are important to her and in her memoir. All the divas know and love Aretha, but they know she will be a little shady about her "queendom". Gladys Knight, Patti, loves her, but know that about her and have stories about her on video. I think Mimi was praising Aretha more than trying to diss Celine. She didn't even say her name. Lol.

So sad Randy didn't love not even one song from "The Rarities". I think the album is great and a gift for those of us who lived through and can appreciate such great artistry and musicianship. I don't buy CD's anymore, but this one I had to have for the nostalgia. When I unwrapped it, I was catapulted back to mid 90's. I think TR are a high note in her career. She could retire now if she wanted too. I wouldn't blame her.

Incredibly frustrated. There's at least one error in every single Mariah lyric jacket, either lyrics misprinted or design inconsistency etc.

Whilst I do agree that Celine's behaviour at the Divas concert can be interpreted as disrespectful towards Aretha, it had nothing to do with ethnicity, culture or race. Celine was caught up in the moment and went with it. She shouldn't have to apologise for being a good singer. Shania, Gloria, and Carole are relatively weak singers, and Mariah's voice was at the point of no return by 1998. Celine was the only one that could hold her own against Aretha.
Aretha invited the Divas to sing, and only Celine stepped up. Now, you can tell Aretha was getting pissed towards the end, as she's up in Celine's face proclaiming "Do you know the Lord?", indicating that Celine has no business singing a gospel song as she doesn't claim Christ (as far as I am aware). And then right at the end, Aretha even as libs "showing off now" to Celine, which was true. She was. Here's the clip.
She pulled Mariah from the background into the foreground to sing with her, Mariah sang a couple of riffs and then stepped back again leaving Aretha by herself at the front. She's asking the others to come forward, Celine is the only one that responds, goes a bit too far, and right at the end Aretha says "showing off now y'all" which was, by my perception, a dig at Celine.

Celine and other BS (96,056)
by Edward from USA
| |

I just don't know how Celine has anything to do with "The Meaning of Mariah Carey" while Eminem, whom she recorded a couple of songs and a video about, is irrelevant. Luis Miguel was also brought in and then again she had to say he didn't see her as black to fit in her narrative of how black she is now. Well, that one drop bullshit some white men made up to negate anything black is pure bullshit, and I've only heard of it here in the US. Nothing wrong with being black or white, and nothing wrong with being mixed or multiracial either. Mariah is a mixed woman, she's black and white, period.

You made me very curious to read Jewel's memoir. After you posted about it, I read and listened to many of her interviews and she seems to be a very wise and intelligent woman.
Thanks for the insight. Since I've never read a memoir, having a perspective of how other artists approached theirs, gets me closer to realize what I really feel about The Meaning of Mariah Carey.

I was a little taken back that MC told Andy, in retrospect she doesn't even like the Firecracker version anymore, prefers the Candy version, and glad she ended up redoing it.
This show that it was just more about the principle of the situation ie being sabotaged by Sony and having to work double hard to undo the damages, verses "still" being mad about not getting to use the sample and resenting JLo over it.

I haven't read the part about Celine Dion yet. But wow, that seems kind of low of her to dwell on that. It seems kind of irrelevant in the bigger scheme of her book.

Grievances (96,052)
by Mirage_Nunez from America

I believe Mariah was more offended because she felt Celine was trying to go toe to toe with Aretha (who is her favorite singer) in a seemingly competitive way. It's like today (at Celine's current age) if Adele or Demi got on stage with Celine and attempted to "out sing" her during My Heart Will Go On", hitting the higher belts over her voice, doing extra runs etc. Now, I love Celine too, thought she sounded wonder that night, and wish Mariah wouldn't have immortalized this in her memoirs as well (on a personal note). However, I can clearly see that there was a spirit of competition in the air that night, specifically during Natural Woman, Aretha nor Celine allowed poor Carol to get one line in because they were so busy showing out. Even Carol spoke on this (in which she blamed Aretha more.)
Does this make Celine a horrible woman. No, but I can see it being a cultural faux pas. Not in a white person vs black person way, but more of an American cultural thing. I've notice that people usually do revere older legends they share the stage with and allow them to shine a little more out of respect, especially on their signature song. At the end of the day Aretha wasn't going to let anyone upstage her anyway. So regardless it all worked out.

I agree with what you saying that Mariah does not seem self-aware and objective about her past experiences. But I think that is partly because she wants to portray herself in a positive way to the world to see. Maybe this book isn't necessarily for the lambs, because we already know so much about her. Celebrities like Mariah get bashed by the media for things they didn't do or say. I still come across people who don't like Mariah based on whatever they have seen in the media. So, I think the book was just to make people think positively of her, instead of having them judge her by her past downfalls. We, as lambs, know that there is so much more that she could have said and wanted her to mention. But this book is about giving her a positive image.

Reading "cultural" as "racial" is a mistake. Cultures have etiquettes that outsiders may not know - especially where it concerns relating to elders in public settings. Any Afro-American performer with social intelligence (and culturally appropriate mentorship) knows how to respect the relation between seniors and juniors in various settings. I have no stake whatsoever in the Celine v Mariah aspect of that chapter since I'm reading Mariah's book rather than checking for Celine's book - wherever it is. But to suggest that Mariah can't make a cultural distinction without being racist only suggests that Afro-American culture doesn't exist and/or has no right to retain and discuss distinct social practices. Do Afro-Brits have anything like this level of cultural practice? I suspect they have but I wouldn't know for sure. But surely you know, yes?

Lol I had to go back and re read the couple of paragraphs on Divas Live. Mimi is obviously an Aretha fan and has just as much of a right to her opinion on that performance, as anyone else. It certainly tracks with the great old NY Times review of that event. And we've discussed divas live many times on this board and many agree that Celine sounded like a wounded cat trying to sing along with Aretha, but you know opinions we've all got them. But whatever her opinion, it isn't a lie, it just doesn't match yours and apparently a few others.

But just in 2018 Celine mentioned that she and Mariah had some moment in the studio while recording their albums (Courage and Caution). I'm still not in that chapter but I heard some of it on social media and made me confused why she had to brought it back again and now with more like bitterness in it. Putting some context on how huge she was making it to be, maybe we don't know something about it that has more meaning other than what we have seen on the performance?
