I Pray (95,973) by RibbonB from USA
Wow, Paul (I Pray) Robbins, sure has changed. She still sings great. I'd love to hear her update since Mimi wrote the song.

Re: One Night (95,970) (95,972) by Tevin from USA
I feel like Mariah could have released this back in the day and have TLC on the chorus singing with her and Left Eye could have had a rapping verse on it for a remix. What do you all think?

Re: Walter A (95,958) (95,971) by T from USA
I’m talking about a moment in the book that involved a knife. I don’t think Walter was present. Cory Rooney confirmed he was there with TM and one other man.

Re: One Night (95,960) (95,970) by T from USA
It’s a great song. And I agree I hope there’s one more Rarities album in the future. I mean, she’s made the songs already night as well make a little money from them.

Oops my bad. I'll have to take a closer look. Shane it wasn't Walter A.

Mesmerized (95,968) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
This song to me does exactly what its title promises. The best revelation on The Rarities for me (let's be honest, we all kinda knew for the longest time that the original Loverboy version was gonna be fire from the sample selection alone anyway).

Mesmerized sounds like Loverboy meets You Don't Know What To Do. Not exactly something you can sing along to, but it's quite obvious that that wasn't what Mariah was trying to achieve with it. It isn't too great lyrically, but you barely even notice that because its uplifting, effortless glide is just something that's rarely achieved in today's music. It's just a sophisticated-sounding well-constructed song where each component flows smoothly into the next - it's songs like these that make you wonder how this is the same woman who also made disjointed missteps such as Infinity and Save The Day? It's just melodically gorgeous through and through. That layered chorus is quite genius and the track is really a timeless fusion of modern sophisti-pop and disco.

iTunes chart (95,967) by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
The Rarities is currently #3 on the world iTunes top album chart. Does anybody remember how well Caution performed on this list?

Loverboy (95,966) by Edward from USA
Loverboy is simply brilliant. Mariah's vocals are smoother and better than the one released, and that beat, lore have mercy. It would've definitely hit #1 back then. I'm so glad we finally got to listen to it. Now I understand more than ever Mariah's rage towards Tommy and Jennifer, it was pure evil sabotage.

The Rarities sounds like any other Mariah album in the 90's. It's just great, with at least 4 potential singles. I thought I would replace some tracks and skip others, but I have listened to it non-skip ever since I got it. "One Night" is my favorite, followed by "Loverboy" and "Mesmerized". The sequencing with "DYTOM", "EFA" and "SA" makes perfect sense, it gives cohesiveness to the album, rather than a bunch of disjointed tracks thrown in together. The best gift so far this shitty year.

Re: The Rarities - track by track review (sorry) (95,956) (95,965) by Bill from the UK
Don't get me wrong little Andy, I love it but I can't see it gelling with the rest of the album. That said, it has been added to my Daydream playlist, as I too have been playing that "where would it have been sequenced had it originally been on the respective album" game. I've slotted it where you recommend (which was where I had it in my head as well). Daydream now runs thusly:

1. Fantasy
2. Underneath the Stars
3. One Sweet Day
4. Open Arms
5. Always Be My Baby
6. Slipping Away
7. I Am Free

1. One Night
2. When I Saw You
3. Long Ago
4. Melt Away
5. Forever
6. Daydream Interlude
7. Looking In

I also always divide my albums into "sides" lol.

Is the vinyl definitely including the concert? I would have thought it would have just been the first disc?

Nice review indeed. I'm completely shocked how good the rarities are. What a joy to listen to. After the first listen I really feel like back to the good old days. It feels like a complete new album but with just the best of the best. The Firecracker version is fantastic and hot. "Can you hear me", "All I live for" are my new favourites. And "Cool on you", "Mesmerized", "Lullaby of Birdland" and of course "Out here on my own". What a gift for her fans. Cheers.

One Night (95,960) by Edward from USA
Am I the only one in love with "One Night"? It has single potential written all over it, even now. Love the sample on "Mesmerized", I think she picked "Meteorite" over it. I think there's going to be a Rarities 2. I'm pretty sure that Mariah recorded over 20 or more tracks for each album in the 90's. I suspect there's going to be a new album next year.

The Rarities vinyl version (95,959) by Bobby A from United States
Did anybody else purchase the vinyl version? I am just curious about how is Legacy going produced 32 tracks on a 4LP set. I think we there will have to be a 5th etched (blank side) vinyl record included. Only time will tell in December.

If you are talking about the photo on the page with All I Live For, it's not Walter, it's Dana John Chappelle.

Re: The Rarities - track by track review (sorry) (95,937) (95,956) by Andrew from the United Kingdom
Oh Big Willy, have you lost your mind? One Night is effing brilliant. It absolutely ahould have been on Daydream heading up the cassette B-side (after I am Free, before When I Saw You) or it could have been a good closer after Looking In. I love love love this track.

Here We Go Round Again is, likewise, a stone groove winner and a brilliant album opener. How could this not make the album but nonsense like There's Got To Be A Way could?

But Firelover Crackerboy is absolutely the best. I would go as far to say as it is one the best things Mariah Carey has ever recorded. It has unique momentum and bounce. When she uses full voice for "ride" for "take me for a ride" I had a mini orgasm. I know 100% I will be playing this song every day for the foreseeable future.

The Rarities is a brilliant album.

Re: Walter A (95,953) (95,955) by T from USA
I don't think Walter was one of the boys at the table that night. It was TM, Cory Rooney and the manager. (Cory confirmed he was there and a knife was present.)

The Meaning of Mariah Carey (95,954) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
Mariah does paint herself to be a victim in the book that it does overshadow how much of a survivor she is. It does get annoying at times, but like people have said here before, it's her story to tell. Whatever we think of it and however she comes across while telling it doesn't matter at all. She has made it very clear in the various promotional interviews that the goal of the book is to give the young Mariah a voice (she wanted the back cover to be the main cover, but I guess others decided against it), which I believe has been achieved. It was our decision to puchase it to learn more about her, and while much of the contents has been common knowledge for most of the Lambily for decades now, those were just bits and pieces of the story that we have gathered here and there throughout the last 30 years. We really just want to hear it from her and how she states it.

I feel like the writing of it is still very much Mariah. Vivid, unpolished, cliched at times, dramatic - exactly like herself. I'd rather have that than some pretentious narrative of how much she has, over time, gained a more mature perspective of what she experienced or what was done to her, because she clearly isn't there yet. It's imperfect, but it's a celebrity memoir - no one is buying it expecting some expertly written, completely balanced account. So what if she sounds like she's stuck in the past? So what if the language is quite provocative and explicit? That's how she is at times. No respect lost from me. I'd be more concerned if she came across as very put together. That would just be pretentious.

I thought it was kind of closure/moving on when she included the photograph of her and Walter in The Rarities booklet.

The Meaning of Mariah Carey (95,952) by Todd from Sydney, Australia
Interesting to read the different opinions here. For me, I thought it was incredibly well written. And to be honest, I was still interested in the music, but not so much the person as of late - however reading this has completely changed that. As stupid as this sounds, I really feel like I know her more now, and the connection that I used to feel to her (similarly to Andrew, MC literally saved my life in the late 90's), has been restored.

Re: Walter A (95,949) (95,951) by Bill from the UK
I was glad Mariah didn't bring up Walter, Eminem, Stella etc. and what went down with them. Throughout the memoir it became clear she, under advice from her therapist, is more about looking ahead and focussing on the future and making the best possible life for her family, and to cut out toxicity. I see the whole memoir as a cathartic piece giving the "wayward child" her voice, and closure, and acknowledging that where that little girl is now, is a good place, surrounded by unconditional love and stability. Something she never had until recently.

Amazon allows the downloads when you buy the physical CD. That's cool. So I can listen to the mp3's today. So I know what I'm going to do today. Lol.

Walter A (95,949) by Matt from Australia
Was anyone else hoping for some closure on the professional break up of Mariah and Walter? Though I wonder if he was one of "Tommy's boys" who watched him put a knife to her face.
