Walter A (95,949) by Matt from Australia
Was anyone else hoping for some closure on the professional break up of Mariah and Walter? Though I wonder if he was one of "Tommy's boys" who watched him put a knife to her face.

Here we go around again (95,948) by MusicfanJ from Germany
This is such a fun and happy song. I love the carefree mood of it and the Jackson 5 vibes. I'm also addicted to "Lullaby of Bidland". Jazz-Mariah should be the next thing. I haven't heard the complete album yet because I'm waiting for the physical CD. But it's hard, I think I can't resist to start the Firecracker version on Mariah's channel. Greetings to you all and keep enjoying the one and only Mariah Carey.

Thanks Bill for the review. Nicely done. I was about to do mine but I know someone would do it and I could not agree more. You made me laugh with your comment on STD lol. Also, I got that Chris Nickson Mariah book too and now, I remember she mentioned that song. CD1 gives me the same feeling I have during the 90s and 00s when I was finally listening to her each new album. Similarly, it is on repeat since October 2nd. Although honestly, I skip some tracks that I heard before. Loving Mesmerized, Cool On You, Can You Hear Me, and Here We Go Around Again. Plus I Pray in my solitude moment.

Re: The memoir (95,935) (95,946) by RibbonB from USA
I'm just getting time to crack it open this weekend. I wasn't expecting much on self reflection, but I'm pissed she was so stingy on the picture sharing. Not even a good selection of Dem Babies. Pics. She could've at least given us some good new shots, or old exclusive never before seen shots of herself. The old personal family photos are nice I guess. With respect to the racial stuff, Michaela said in some article that Mimi had strong feelings about it and insisted that they be put in the book. I will likely breeze through this text by Sunday.

Re: The memoir (95,935) (95,945) by Lee from USA
Well, I really want to read it now. If other celebrities could hold grudges and not look or sound immature, then why it is a different story when it is Mariah? Hell, she get blamed way more than she get credited. You wanted her to look more responsible and self-reflective, but she has been that while being denied and/or sharing credit for her success. If she's "trapped in the past", then it is because people keep bringing it up, duh. Mariah has been pretty much a nun for 3 decades now, and you're freaking out over bad language. It's not like you're getting a refund, so I don't know what to tell you.

How could we get Loverboy to #1 ? (95,944) by ksquarred from paris
Hey guys, I love the original Loverboy, and I think if it had been released it would've been one of Mariah's #1s. It really bums me out that it wasn't, because it's one of her strongest uptempo to me, I can dance to it all night long whereas I can't dance to Fantasy of Honey. Mariah was clearly robbed of a song that could've been one of her biggest, long lasting hits.

I really want her to get payback by getting it to #1. Music releases are kinda slow atm because of the covid, and I'm thinking she's not the only JLo enemy, and maybe, if we joined fanbases we could get some big names to help her get Loverboy to the top. Mariah is getting a lot of buzz with her memoirs and many celebrities are promoting it. She mentions this incident in the memoirs. I did my research and apparently Mariah is not he only one to hate JLo, there is also: Rihanna, Nicki Minaj , Cher, Brandy and Ashanti.

If someone here has a foot in one of those singer's fanbases, maybe we could start a campaign for them to collaborate on a remix? Also, if there are young tiktokers reading this board, start a challenge with the song.

Re: Amazon (95,942) (95,943) by enwar00 from usa
Yes and I almost just cancelled my Amazon order and did exactly what you did but there was a line at Target and I didn't feel like waiting. I'm currently streaming the album in the car because that's my only option but I want the CD for home. The book was delivered Thursday night even though they originally said next Tuesday. Can't wait to get back home and read some more.

Amazon (95,942) by Tevin from USA
So I pre-ordered Mariah's book on Amazon, and it came in on time, but my pre-ordered The Rarities CD said that it wasn't coming until November. I'm like what the heck. So I canceled my order and bought the CD from Target. Amazon is slipping. Anyone else has a problem getting their pre-order book or CD?

Mariah Carey vinyl (95,940) by Bobby A from United States
I ordered a Mariah Carey debut vinyl from a indie record store here in Atlanta called Comeback Vinyl. It was delivered to store on Thursday. I picked it up today. It is not 180g or 150g. I am sort of disappointed that the vinyl is not heavier quality. The vinyl promo label just says "Remastered at 24 bit Hi Res Audio-Recreated from the Original Release". Bill, I sure hope the Walmart Exclusive is least 150g. We will find out this coming week.

Haha, the thing is STD isn't that bad in isolation, but compared against the other tracks on the album, it's just nowhere near as good.

Bill, that was a fun read. I'm glad you weren't disappointed after how excited you were the last couple of weeks. I feel bad for STD - it's actually living the life of its acronym. Everybody wants to stay far away from it.

The Rarities - track by track review

Read at your own peril.

First I wish to congratulate Mariah on this huge milestone in her career and thank her for all the gifts she has bestowed upon us. It is incredible how generous she has been for the MC30 celebrations, and we have truly been spoilt, and this album is no exception. Before I delve into it, the photographs used throughout are gorgeous (as all photos of Mariah are, but these are particularly striking, especially the Butterfly outtake photo with her hair billowing as she smiles), and I am over the moon Mariah included the lyrics and a paragraph about each track, as I was hoping for this to have happened.

Here We Go Around Again
Some background to this. This song had long been a mystery to me. I had Mariah's biography by Chris Nickson which came out in 1994, around the time of Merry Christmas' release. The book referred to this song, and described it wonderfully, and that the strength of the demo songs rested on this. I had always wondered in my head since I was about 10/11 years old what it would sound like. He wrote that it was Motown flavoured, but I didn't know if this was Jackson 5 funky Motown, or Gladys Knight ballad Motown etc. When Mariah started teasing with clips of this song, I went nuts. It was nothing like how I imagined it to be, and I was so looking forward to hearing the whole song, and it did not disappoint. I loved all the Carey/Margulies compositions from the debut album, there was a certain innocence about them I guess. I'd always longed to hear more of their work, and hoped they would reunite (but after reading about his appalling contract he made Mariah sign in the memoir, I get why she won't). The 1990 vocals are as lush and volumes and sublime as anything from the debut, and she sings with such conviction and exuberance. It was an immediate favourite. I understand the "sitcom" comments, but I think it sounds wonderful.

Can You Hear Me
Ah yes. The song I was super excited about and mentioned in every post on here since I heard about it. Interesting to see that it was written for Barbra Streisand. The Emotions vocals are as beautiful as anything on that album, and the simplistic approach and arrangement reminded me of Vanishing. And then I find that, like Vanishing, Mariah self produced this song. It really is sung wonderfully, in a style very in keeping with the other ballads on the Emotions album. It could have been a very strong closing number for the album, but I think The Wind was better ultimately.

Do You Think of Me
Always been one of my favourite songs, and glad to see it is included here. We all know this one so let's move on.

Everything Fades Away
Ditto above. Glad I can now make a Music Box playlist with the correct album closing track. UK fans get me.

All I Live For
I agree with Mariah's comment. This is 'soooo 90s'. It would have been a great addition to Music Box, as that album was extremely ballad heavy. I was surprised this was a Carey/Afanasieff composition, as he usually brought the ballads and the schmaltz, but this is like a lighter I've Been Thinking About You, and would have really given some balance to Music Box had it made the final cut. I love the mini high note, but the song's fade out seems to come out of nowhere which was quite jarring.

One Night
You know, the jury is still out on this one. The introduction is incredible, and could have been a pleasant interlude on Daydream, but, even know the song has all the hallmarks of a Daydream winner (layered vocals, great vibe, dreamy feel), I think lyrically it's not as mature as the rest of the album and would have stuck out like a sore thumb. It's great in many ways, but it doesn't belong on Daydream.

Slipping Away
We all love Slipping Away, great to see it finally find a home.

Out Here On My Own
As per everyone's thoughts when this was released prior to the album, an absolutely gorgeous song, delivered impeccably, which is now my closing track on my Glitter playlist. It is heartbreaking and one of Mariah's best vocal deliveries ever.

Loverboy (Firecracker Version)
Holy moly. Wow. I was absolutely floored. This has been on constant repeat, it is pure ear candy, and I am so frustrated that Mariah had to re-record the song and change the sample before of the sabotage and theft of her idea by Sony. This has now replaced the Candy and Remix versions on my Glitter playlist and opens the album. The a capella 'do do do dah' that bookends the song is genius, Mariah's vocals are amazing, and the sample gives the song such a great energy and bounce that is missing from the Candy version. Now I play the Candy version, her vocals seem listless and uninspired, which is completely understandable. The drive and energy of the Firecracker version's delivery is completely gone. And I agree, this was a natural sonic progression from Fantasy, Honey and Heartbreaker. No wonder the idea was stolen, it is the best thing on the album. Oh what sweet revenge it would be if the fans were to send this up the charts and be MC's 20th number one haha.

I Pray
Beautifully sung, sweet melody, lovely message. I think this would have been more appropriate to put out in today's climate over Save the Day.

Cool On You
The infamous Kick Rocks finally sees the light of day. Fun like most of E=MC2. In a previous life, I would have said this could have replaced I'm That Chick, but that song now has a whole other meaning following the Chick revelation the other week lol. It's much better than 4real4real, but the rest of the album is probably better than this track. Thank God JD didn't 'y'all know who this is' like he does over the rest of E=MC2.

Mesmerized
Second to Loverboy. How on God's green earth did this not find its way onto Me I Am Mariah? Yet the copy and pasted Bet'cha Gon' Know and It's a Wrap did? It makes no sense. This song is absolutely incredible. Someone mentioned it put them in mind of Stevie Wonder, I share the sentiments. It has a great retro summery 70s vibe and is glorious. I can't stop playing this.

Lullaby of Birdland
Please Mariah, make that jazz album. You are born to do it, your voice suits the genre perfectly. The scatting, the improvisation, the humour. It's got everything and I'm glad this was included.

Save the Day
Eek. Let's move on.

Close My Eyes (Acoustic)
Great to accompany the memoir as this song seems to be the running theme through many chapters. Nicely done. I'm sure this is the same version she performed on GMA not long ago.

Tokyo Dome Daydream Concert
Meh. Like many, I already had the "Out In Japan" bootleg, which was pretty good quality to begin with. Interesting that Always Be My Baby had the audience participation segment edited out (but then, the audience just sat there and didn't move a muscle so I get it). Nice to have Just Be Good to Me officially at last. But I don't like how half of each song is just the album version brought down a semitone.

I am so happy with this release. I haven't stopped playing it and, with the exception of STD, every track is a worthy inclusion and an absolute winner. I'm glad the B Sides have a home now (though I do feel bad for There For Me). Here's hoping The Rarities II You appears soon, as I'm sure MC will unearth more from that vault of hers over time.

Thank you Mariah for such a blessing and for all you have done for us. This album is amazing and I love you so much.

Re: Live at the Tokyo Dome (95,926) (95,936) by MusicfanJ from Germany
That concert is giving me life. I have it on my PC for some years, but to watch it on this quality is everything. I was smiling the whole video, at the end there was a tear and then smiling again. I swear Mariah is taking my "Corona Blues" away. She gives me hope again. What a woman, what a voice. And [The Rarities] will be played again and again for a long time. Thank you Mariah.

The memoir (95,935) by BFF from United States
I'm nearing the end of the memoir, and I have to be honest. The quality of the writing is very poor, and I think Mariah comes off as an immature person who holds grudges and is not very capable of self-reflection. I don't get the sense that Michaela Angela Davis spent much time working on this. I get the sense that she wrote it in a few hours after speaking with Mariah a few times. And I also get the sense that she had a particular agenda for her writing. So many of the passages reinforce really retrograde racialist thinking and reduce people to the color of their skin. And why so many expletives in the writing? The judgmental attitude toward Mariah's father's gravitation toward the Unitarian Universalist church also really rubbed me the wrong way.

As I was reading it, I thought back to reading Jewel's memoir "Never Broken", how much better the writing was, and how much more emotionally mature and self-aware Jewel came off. Jewel arguably had an upbringing equally as difficult (if not more) as Mariah's but does not seem trapped by the past in the way that Mariah is.

I continue to respect Mariah's artistry and hate that she went through so many terrible things with her family, with Tommy Mottolla, et cetera. But in terms of Mariah the person, I think I've lost a bit of respect for her with this project.

Loverboy v.1 (95,934) by Todd from Sydney, Australia
I really like the Firecracker version of Loverboy. It continues the first single vibes that Dreamlover, Fantasy, Honey and Heartbreaker started. I never really liked the Candy version, as it sounded disjointed, and she sounded like she had a cold. But this one - I now understand why she was so pissed off. Would it have saved the movie? No, nothing would but the soundtrack might have had a fighting chance. I really like all The Rarities songs with exception to "I Pray". I like her gospel tinged songs, but this one sounds like being smacked over the head with a bible.

Re: Loverboy Firecracker (95,925) (95,933) by Bobby A from United States
So true. Mariah would have her 20th number one by now for sure. Her vocals are some of her best. The chorus makes you want to sing and dance. Justice for Loverboy Firecracker.

Trevor Noah - the Daily Show (95,930) by ADAM from USA
This interview was fire. Mariah looked beautiful and radiant. Never seen her look so pared down and basic. Really enjoyed how articulate she was. She was engaging and so connected with Trevor. Trevor’s questions were so good and he was genuinely interested in getting the best out of her. They both had wonderful chemistry. This was how a interview should be conducted. This interview was easily 1 of her 3 best ever (Genius interview, Oprah 2020 interview, Trevor Noah interview).

I Pray (95,929) by Aliya from Canada
I can't believe the song, "I Pray". It's just absolutely beautiful. It takes my breath away. It's just so genuine and sweet, from the lyrics to her tone, her strength and her signature sound. It's perfect. Everything she expresses paints this beautiful picture of how we all want the world to be. There are no words to describe how much I love this song. Thank you so much Mariah Carey.

200 pages in (95,928) by Randy from USA
One of the worst things about being a die hard fan is you really do know everything about an artist. What makes it bad when reading their memoir is that you have seen all the preliminary press. The book is written beautifully. But I'll be damned if it ain't nothing in it I don't already know. I'm giving myself a break now and will finish the rest tomorrow.

As expected, MC snapped (95,927) by Marissa from USA
I haven't been on here for a while, but just wanted to say that this book is such a juicy read. I never anticipated the level of trauma Mariah has been through and it's astonishing to know how much information this woman has been able to hold back for decades. We really barely knew anything about her to be honest aside from some intentionally vague stories and reading between the lines of song lyrics. I had complete faith from the get-go from when I saw some of her interviews from 2018 on that she was going to be candid and write a book of substance even if that meant putting people on blast. She just came across more and more as being at that point of having nothing to lose by keeping it real and I'm glad that she did. Happy reading everyone. P.S. I'm currently on the Fantasy chapter.

Currently watching the livestream of the concert. Thrilled to be able to watch this in HD on my tv and speakers. I wonder if Mariah believes this to be her best concert tour and that's why it was chosen for The Rarities album? Also just want to reiterate I love MC30.

Loverboy Firecracker (95,925) by TheWind from England
Mariah was robbed in every sense of the word. The Firecracker version of Loverboy is amazing. Wow. Just wow. The version released sounds rushed, and disjointed, and lacks a chorus that punches. This version would have been a huge hit. No doubt. It just pops right out of the speakers. The vocals are fire too.
