Save The Day (95,146)
by Edward from USA
| |
|
|
I hadn't commented on STD because I wanted to actually read what most people here had to say. Well, I think the song has a great chorus, but it feels half-cooked, rushed, as if she said: "JD, let's throw this sample in so I could finally feature an artist in a duet that never was." Sometimes I've questioned whether Mariah has actually lost her muse, but then I think of "Caution" and I reconsider my thoughts. I'm glad STD is relegated to being on the second CD. I do appreciate the fact she's giving us new music, but I think she had plenty of time to cook something great, memorable, way more polished, thought out. Even though I have made my peace with Mariah's voice, I'm worried that in 5 years there would only be whistles left. What in the world is happening? What is affecting this woman's voice so much at this point that it is fading away so fast? I feel very sad about it.

I apologize for the wrong choice of words. Please forgive me. Blame it on my mind and not my heart. Sometimes I get caught up in moment trying to type my posts because I am multitasking. You all know I love Mariah. It won't happen again. Sorry.

My comments are about the original post and one from a few days ago.
Yeah, I didn't like that he said that either. Is she's a beast now that needs to be tamed? Don't forget "they" [were] upset the other day about one of the posters on here simply saying someone must have mental issues on this board for the negativity, but now we need to tame her bipolar, she's not an animal. For the record, saying someone has mental issues isn't in itself negative. It's not butterflies and rainbows, but it's stating a possible reason for the extreme hatred.

Love it. I was introduced with her debut album. But I feel like I could have become a fan by being introduced by several of her albums. Daydream and Butterfly would have definitely done it for me.

"Terna and We Are Lambily irritate the hell out of me with their 'Mariah has never done anything wrong; she's never even stepped on an ant.'" Neither of us are as you just described. We just choose to remain positive and give her our unconditional love 24/7, unapologetically while making a conscious effort not to judge nor jump to conclusions without weighing the facts first.

Lol, after all the how many weeks at number one on pre-orders alone. Only to find out the Tokyo concert is actually all the lock-down concerts she's been having with Roc & Roe with one audience member - Tanaka. Haha. I would have a field day laughing at Bill. Better don't give her any ideas. We all know by now she's on this message board. Hehe.

Lol. She hasn't had enough time to record a whole album in 6 months. That would be a record for MC.

Please no. The 90s vocals are perfect. If they are re-sung it will be like the monstrosity of Can't Say No. Though I do fear the Carey/Margulies composition will be the GMA 2020 version of Vision of Love, and that one of the Carey/Afanasieff ones will be the GMA 2020 Close My Eyes or that odd Hero remake she did when The Ballads was released.
I'm setting my expectations low so that I am pleasantly surprised. We love everybody.

There is one thing that we can say about Mariah's collaborations with Walter Afansieff is that their songs were never disjointed or weird in anyway. I like to think that when they collaborated together he tamed her bipolar. With JD, Mariah's need to over sing or insert awkward song parts or create crazy arrangements tend to come out more since she has gotten older. STD is just one song on album. We will get others that we haven't heard all. Just be patient everyone.

Save the Day (95,132)

Glad some of you like it but yeah, this is pretty weak. After approximately 70 times of sporadically listening to it in the past 37 hours plus 10 reaction videos later and there's still something off about it. Now if that's not trying to stan, I don't know what is. It does have a fairly decent chorus, although a little too reminiscent of In The Mix in terms of its bounce and vocal delivery. But the biggest challenge is how to keep any casual listener interested enough to even get there. The slow intro is dreary, and of course Jermaine had to come in and unnecessarily introduce the beat drop with his obnoxious tag. The pre-chorus is also unremarkably monotonous and its cadence is quite weird that it takes away from understanding the message of its lyrics. It takes more than a minute for the song to warm up and really settle in and when it does, one couldn't decide whether the sampled vocal is either too dominant or Mariah's melody just couldn't keep up and hold its own. It's a very good, memorable sample, but it could have been incorporated better and less tacked on.
As for the theme of the song, it has always been difficult to pull off these "save humanity" tracks without being too preachy, condescending, cheesy or coming off as insincere. Even the best ones out there like What's Going On and Imagine have been criticized when they first came out and somehow still are to this day. This one is a pass for me and I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be the weakest song on The Rarities.
As of this writing it's been at #4 for almost a day, surprisingly holding up better than expected so far on the US iTunes. That is until you realize how little it's actually currently selling in comparison to the #1 and #2 songs. Still excited for the compilation, but honey this song just ain't it, at least for me. Still hope it does well for the cause and Mariah (and Lauryn as well).

What I'm excited for (95,131)
by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa

I am super excited for The Rarities. I think I'm most excited because each era of hers mirrored whatever what was going on in my life at that time. So I think it's going to be so fun revisiting these eras and have them all in one collection. Like, missing moments from each of those eras. I can't wait to see the songwriting.

Save The Day (95,130)
by Stacey from USA

I like the message of the song. Her vocals in certain parts are amazing, especially the 2nd verse as others have mentioned. That's about it. The song tries to hard with pieces that don't fit together. The Fugees sample sounds out of place. Lauryn's vocals repeating over and over again sounds odd. But, if The Rarities era is about giving us songs we've never heard before, then keep them coming. We might not like them all, but it's great we are getting the chance to decide either way.

I mean... many people disagree on here. It's the delivery and the way it's communicated that's disrespectful. I've watched many vocal experts analyze her vocals and they can critique without trashing her.
Randy, you often talk about "delusional fans" but delusion disorder is real. And it is a mental illness. As casually as that term is thrown around in here, I'm surprised that you all are upset about what was said.
I love a disagreement, debating is always fun. But when it has been lowered to pettiness, I think that's the turnoff for most people. But I have definitely learned to just skip the one or 2 people's posts that I typically don't enjoy.
Side note, I am a huge Prince fan and I remember his following being very divided where some people just stayed with 80s Prince and many of the rest of us just learned his new ways of creating music and I think it's actually nice to grow with an artist as they evolve. Same with Joni Mitchell, I love her old voice and how it sounds in her later works.

Rarities partial tracklisting (95,127)
by Bill from the UK

Genius.com has some of the tracklisting for The Rarities detailed here:
2. Can You Hear Me 3. Do You Think of Me 4. Everything Fades Away 7. Slipping Away 8. Out Here On My Own 13. Lullaby of Birdland This is what many here have already deduced, so nothing new really, but thought I'd share. For all I know they may have got their information from here (exclamation mark).

The Rarities tracks (95,126)
by Warr-en-Peace from United States
| |
|
|
This may have been mentioned, but from a quick glance at the writing credits it sure seems like The Rarities will only feature Sony and Columbia tracks. One reason this makes sense is that now that Mariah is back under Sony, she finally has access to her archived recordings. Unfortunately this would leave out Charmbracelet through Me. I Am Mariah eras.
I share the sentiment that I'm hoping The Rarities has unheard songs or songs that leaked in low-quality forms. So many "rare" tracks we've had for 10-15 years in high-quality forms.

I suspect the first three in your list will definitely be on the album, going by the credits. I don't mind Do You Think of Me and Slipping Away appearing as they are "real" b sides, however Everything Fades Away isn't exactly a rarity considering it was on every version of Music Box as the closing track except the American editions.

Hi Nikki, I was "introduced" to Mariah by hearing the "Daydream" album, then became die-hard with "Butterfly". I think either would still make new fans. Daydream for the vocals, Butterfly for the lyrical content. I would be happy to introduce a whole new generation to MC with either album.
