Hi Terna. I love Alone in Love. Very subdued, very simple, elegant and mature. For some reason it reminds me of some Phill Collins' slow jams from the time. Very quite storm 80's RnB also. BTW, I too remember my radio taping days.

The way you describe Honey is almost the way I would describe #Beautiful. I think that dong could have been a sound of a summer. But the lazy vocal, crap production, and lack of middle 8 and melodic development made the song feel like a big of a joke. But it actually had the makings of a modern classic. A bit like The Art Of Letting Go. I think both of those tracks could have been something spectacular but they lacked confidence and faded into nothing. So many missed opportunities, all the more painful given we are having to put Thank God I Found You and I Don't Wanna Cry into lists of greats.

I've never been that enamored with Honey. It's okay, but always been a bit mediocre and I group it with Babydoll in terms of Butterfly tracks and what I could live without. At first listen I was massively underwhelmed, especially following the perfection of Daydream. I think it's one of her worst-sung songs, very nasally and raspy and disjointed. The video is better than the song by miles. Touch My Body was fun and unique and a little bit different from the norm. I loved the video, and still do. I get where Honey sits in terms of it being the launching pad for New Mariah, and why so many love it, but it was as if Classic Mariah was killed off with a dull, rusty, blunt blade.

That sounds wonderful Bill. The magic of vinyl is something a lot of the youngsters will never understand. Streaming wiil never be an experience. So enjoy your records. I love the debut and "Emotions" so much. Heaven for music lovers.

That's so cool and yes "Alone in Love" too is one of my favorites from the [debut] and also actually the first song I heard from it when I first heard the whole album play on radio late one night. (I think a Lamb was on air that night programming her music. Lol.) I captured the moment on tape too.

I thought I would do my own list before reading yours and see how they compare. They're reasonably similar. Although how you think that Touch My Body is s better song than Honey is beyond my comprehension.

Emotions LP (94,381)
by Bill from the UK

So after five years of saving, I was finally able to purchase a Technics turntable, which I have been after for years. Lots of sideswipes along the way with emergency bills and whatnot, but it's with me now. I enjoy the "experience" of vinyl. The nice big artwork, the lyric sheets, the fact you have to pay attention to it etc., and often thought went into how each side opened and closed etc.
I've been spinning Mariah's albums on it, through a very good hi-fi system I have (Ruark R5), and I must say, there is definitely something to vinyl sounding "better", in spite of the pops and clicks. I cleaned all her records with special formula and special wipes to clear out the dust in the grooves, and they honestly sound brilliant.
The Emotions album in particular, sounds wonderful. The best I've ever heard it. The output into the hi-fi system, using the Technics turntable, it sounds beautiful. I have had this album since the 90s and, although I have always enjoyed it and have listened to it thousands of times, I heard new things this time round. There are so many percussion lines on To Be Around You, Til the End of Time is like an experience all by itself, and there is do much going on in Can't Let Go and the other ballads.
Same goes for the debut, Alone In Love was like a whole new experience, could clearly hear the whistle that's buried way in the mix at the climax as well. Fantastic. I'm so pleased and it was worth the five year wait lol.

I so don't agree with this article. Not to start a list war but you know I can't help it. 19. Hero 18. Dreamlover 17. I'll Be There 16. I Don't Wanna Cry 15. Thank God I Found You (The Make It Last remix is better) 14. We Belong Together 13. Touch My Body 12. Love Takes Time 11. Emotions 10. Someday (the video version) 9. Fantasy (the Bad Boy Mix - has both hooks) 8. One Sweet Day 7. All I Want For Christmas Is You 6. Honey (Bad Boy Mix Ft. Mase & The Lox) 5. Don't Forget About Us 4. Vision of Love 3. Heartbreaker 2. Always Be My Baby 1. My All

Album of the 90s (94,373)
by Andrew from the United Kingdom
| |
|
|
BBC Radio 2 (possibly the most popular radio channel in the UK) recently held a poll of listeners' ultimate 90's album. Music Box was shortlisted in what is not a very long list and against the ultimate seminal albums in the UK from the 90's. Just reading the list has made me nostalgic for what was surely the greatest decade for music since the dawn of the modern era. There is no beating it. Reading the list reminded of songs that remind me of specific periods or events and made me both happy it happened, and sad that it cannot be revisited. Bittersweet symphony, indeed.
It is great that Mariah's importance to the 90's is remembered in this way.
