Re: The voices Mariah and Whitney (89,299) (89,324) by B from USA
Why hasn't Mariah's debut album, which was certified nine-times platinum by the RIAA on December 15, 1999, been certified diamond? Surely, it has sold (amassed?) enough album-equivalent units (via streams, downloads, and sales) over the last ten yeara to warrant it.

I agree Bill. She's definitely not spending her own money for anything.

I guess they would even after her last three albums underperformed because of how much money her tours gross. However, it isn't uncommon for artist to use their own money on videos.

B, it's Madonna. Of course her label will invest heavily in launching her new single, album and tour.

Re: Caution - now that we've had some time (89,304) (89,315) by B from USA
Caution is a perfect pop song. It's seductive and has a chorus that sticks with you. Caution is a perfect pop song. It has a chorus that sticks with the listener. I think it should be the next single and if Mariah's team is smart they'd call up Drake for a remix.

This excerpt from Est. 1997 sums up why Caution should be the next single. One might assume that "Caution", the album's title track, would be a sassy showcase of braggadocio, but in fact it is an introspective, self-aware love song with an ominous ambiance. With a seductive yet haunting beat and pristine vocals, it immediately engages the listener. The song has clear tropical influences allowing it to sound current without overdoing it to sound trendy, a line Mariah has always been able to tread well.

Her buttery vocals effortlessly slide atop the slick and cutting No I.D. produced beat. Its chorus might just be the best on the album, it just sticks. "Caution" is fresh, yet reminiscent of late 90s and early 2000s R&B such as Brandy's Never Say Never (1998) and Aaliyah's self-titled final album (2001), which is also probably why it sounds like something Drake would cook up. Without any specific promotion, the song has managed to become one of the album's most streamed tracks, speaking volumes to its sheer greatness.

Madonna most likely spent some of her own money on the video. Labels do not give older artists that are past their prime the same budgets that they give rising or current stars.

Re: Mariah vs Whitney (89,298) (89,309) by B from USA
I love both. When I think of great singers I think of power, range, and musicality. Whitney's voice obviously overpowers Mariah's but Mariah's voice trumps Whitney's when it comes to musicality and range.

Re: Caution - now that we've had some time (89,304) (89,308) by B from USA
I'm still listening to the album from start to finish at least once a day. My favorite songs from the album are Caution, Giving Me Life, and 8th Grade. I love With You and understand why it was chosen as the first single but I think Caution should've been the first single or Stay Long Love You. I think the fans that are dismissive of this era will come to see it differently years from now. I have no complaints about this album or era. Mariah delivered an amazing album, gave us three visuals that aren't cringe worthy or embarrassing in a timely fashion, and is working on repairing her public image which is exactly what she needed to do desperately after the nightmare era.

Groan (89,307) by Warren from Trinidad & Tobago
So I remember someone on this board saying, plus even MC saying, they (labels) don't spend money on videos anymore. Looking at Madonna's new video, I think we can all say that's not true. Now, she's also at the BBMA - hope it's to open the show and be far away from a mundane icon performance. I really wish MC would just let loose be be like Celine and say screw it and loosen up, but only time will tell. She needs to own her career and her impact and also, get a grip on what people will respond to. Even with her current voice, she can go viral if she were disciplined enough. Give Nick the kids for a few days and go on vocal rest... something. Enough with pushing through.

Hi everyone. I was just wondering if the Icon BBMA was performed by other artists showing tribute before Mariah receives the award? I saw a Jennifer Hudson post saying this one's for you Mariah Carey but the commercial says Mariah is performing. Thanks.

Re: Mariah's memoirs (89,303) (89,305) by MusicfanJ from Germany
Like all of you said, I just want some real and honest things to be told. I'm sure Mariah can tell so many interesting things it would be enough for three books. Personally I'm very interested in the time before her stardom. The Long Island days. The year where she went to New York, the beginning of writing the songs for her debut/demotape. Then of course what really happened in her marriage with Tommy. (I think we'll never know and she won't tell.) I mean we all know he was a control freak and so on, but there must have been more scary things. Although it's scary enough. About her break-free years with Butterfly. About Luis Miguel, Derek Jeter. Her experience how it felt to be a legend at the very young age. She had broke so many records at the age of 25. I'm also interested about the marriage with Nick. I understand she can't be negative because he's the father and it must be too hurtful. I would love to read about her friendships with other musicians and "normal" people like Josefine. What she thinks about the music biz in general and how it changed. I'm also open for "deeper" things but I understand it's a risk to tell and Mariah has every right to keep some things like we all do. I'm excited what she will tell.

The song "Caution" climbed to my number one of the album. The second is "Giving me life" (I need a video of it). Followed by "One more gen" and "Portrait". What changed since the release is that now I like "GTFO" and even "SLLY". I don't know why but I often skip "With You".

Mariah's memoirs (89,303) by Gee from U.S.A. (New York City)
I just want her to be raw and candid about what really caused her divorce from Nick. Give us in depth account of what caused the changes in her voice. What was really going on during both the Glitter era and the three year nightmare of the Stella era. I also would like to know what really happened between her and Walter. I also would like an inside look into her creative process with certain eras and songs. I would also like to know what know the truth behind what really happened between her Tommy because she always been so vague. I also would like to know what caused her and Big Jim to stop working together. Also I want to dive into her personal life openly. But whatever it is she would like to share with us I am open to read it as long as it is real, honest, and candid.

Re: Mariah's memoir (89,278) (89,302) by Special K from USA
I wanna hear about her sex life. Did she bang Eminem for real? Did something really happen between those two? Why did she and Nick break up? Is it true that Luis Miguel wanted to marry her and she didn't want to marry him? Is it true that Sophia Vergara confronted her and accused her of stealing Luis away from her? Lol. Did she really date Christian Monzon? I hope so because he fine as hell. I really want Mariah to be honest and set the record straight about the decline in her voice. Giving us more details or insight into what was really going on during the Glitter era would be cool. I would like Mariah to shed some light on why her and Morgan had a falling out. If it's not too traumatizing, speak about the miscarriage she had. It would also be cool if she talked about encounters, relationships, friendships with other celebrities. Good and bad. I done heard Mariah, Tiny, and Da Brat had some fun filled drunken nights together. If this is a true memoir, Mimi need to tell it all. Just kidding because I don't know if that would be a good thing. I just hope we don't find out that Mariah suffered some type of childhood trauma like physical or sexual abuse.

Re: Mariah, the voice, Carey (89,289) (89,301) by Special K from USA
AB, your post was spot on. Honestly, I said what said just to get folks fired up in here, lol. We have debated this before numerous times on this board. Me personally I think it's a great topic to discuss. I have always loved Whitney's voice but I "fell in love" with Mariah's voice. Yes, like others have said, Whitney had bombastic power, control, and knew how to command a stage. I also loved how Whitney showcased confidence in her voice when she would do impromptu runs at the drop of a hat. When it comes to Mariah though, her voice is a freak of nature. The range and versatility alone is out of this world. Whitney couldn't match Mariah's vocal prowess. Whitney couldn't match the different tones that Mariah was able to showcase in her voice. Mariah's tones can be joyful, serious, sad, and down right dark, and haunting. Whitney couldn't do dark and haunting. Mariah Carey doesn't have to showcase bombastic power all of the time to have a hit. To a certain degree Whitney did. Again, that speaks to the versatility and range in Mariah's voice. So yes I agree with you, there is no right or wrong answer when it comes to who is the GOAT between Mariah and Whitney, however one thing we all can definitely agree on is that there will never be another Whitney Houston and no matter how many minions Mariah has, there will never, ever, be in life, ever, another Mariah Carey.
